Good afternoon,
my installation stops always about 50 % but not at the same package with the Error
"The package xxx could not get installed. A reboot could help" (Translated from German)
I used full installation without source code.
My first Legacy CD was made with IMGBurn at full speed, my second on an different Computer with CDBurnerXP at low speed (About 1000KB/s).
My Setup is an Siemens Nixdof PCD-4H with an 486 Processor and an 2GB WD Drive extended with ezdrive.
It dosen't matter if I use ezdrive or not, the error keeps still the same.
Looking forward for help
Best Regards

Hi,
try to install a small installation first, as the big one writes the boot system at the end of installation, so the first installed files will not be bootable. but of course you can also run a sys c: from the cd if you run it from live cd.. If this works, you can first of all execute fdisk to see how big the partition is and if it is fat 16 or fat32. i assume that it is fat16 only as fd may have problems with ezdrive.
when i am correct, try to run fdisk over the rest of the hd, so that we can see what happens.
any chance to get a bios update?
Hello Fritz,
i didn't try a live CD jet, because I assume that my hardware is too old for that, so I used Legacy CDs.
The small installation run fine, but when I start fdimples it freezes and is not working. So I tried an installation without ezdrive, taking in account that I only get one partition with 512MB, still the same, fdimples freezes immediately. I always took FAT16 with ezdrive and without.
On the machine run Win98 befor in same configuration without any problems.
The Mainboard is an Nixdorf D756, my BIOS is V3.20 and Rev. 3.10, I found an update on Rev. 3.16, I'll try next days.
An interesting mainboard from 1993 if I saw right. I found a manual
here:
https://theretroweb.com/motherboard/manual/fts-systembaugrupped756technischeshandbuchde-10-1083520.pdf-5f63c43ea709c149819210.pdf
the interesting thing that I never saw before that it had 2 places for
different types of CPU. And there should be 4 MB RAM inside which
explains why Win98 was able to work with it.
At the moment I have no idea, why fdimples does not support (at least)
the 500 MB HD partition, but if I understand right it supports the
CD-ROM? I will have to ask the creator of fdimples for that.
If CD-ROM works you should be able to copy the zip files for the
programs to HD and unzip them separately? (I know, this is only an
emergency solution).
Some more ideas for the moment: run chkdsk c: or defrag c: to see if
there are problems with the HD. Format c: shows no problems? What does
fdisk say about the 1,5GB? Try different boot options, may help too.
One more thing: There ar monthly updates, in the last year fdisk got
some too. Guckst du hier:

You're right, It's an quite old machine. I didn't search about the two cpu sockets jet, but somebody told me, it's for the extra floating point unit when you insert an 486 without.
Tank you for the manual, it's even written in my native language :)
The computer has even the maximum possible RAM, it's equipped with 32MB.
I already tried to copy the whole CD to HDD, but with XCOPY it stopped after a few files.
Your idea with chkdsk sounds good, I haven't tried that yet, so my job for the next days. Because the BIOS Update sounds more complicated, it seems like it is not possible to flash it direct on the machine.
Fdisk was fine with the partitions bigger than 512MB.
Thank you Fritz

xcopy is known to have problems with a lot of files sometimes. But in my
last tests it worked fine, so I am not sure.
If fdisk is able to recognize more than 512 MB (hopefully 2GB) you
should first try to create a second partition (fdisk is a little tricky
to handle if you never used it) and to format the second partition. dont
forget the reboot after fdisk!!! If this works, it should also be able
to create a big partition too. i assume the settings for legacy are set
to 512 MB FAT16 (standard size). But as soon as fdisk has created 2GB
and format supports it (from CD) the installation should work with this
bigger partition (as then you can let it accept to use it). FreeDOS
offers "dz" (doszip), a Norton Commander clone. The most actual is
available here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/doszip/files/DOS/ ver 2.69 (the last
one had a memory problem).
When everything works, could you test xcopy and report the exact bug
messages?
Let's hope the best. A Siemens Nixdorf computer should get this.

Good evening fritz,
Fdisk and creating a big partition worked fine. I also replaced my CD-ROM Drive and I used scandisk to check for faulty sectors, everything seems fine.
So I went on with installing FreeDOS in Minimal Setup, working like before.
Then I started fdimples and figured out, that it is working fine without CD, of course it makes no sense, because I want to install new package with it.
But then I remembered the live CD, I never thought about this option with my old hardware.
The interesting thing, It worked, now I'm able to install packages, not really fast, but it's working.
Now I was really interested, if the full Installation runs trough with the Live CD, but it also stops about 50 %.
But now I can try reinstall the packages I need with minimal installation and the Live CD.
Let's hope it will work with all packages I want to use.
Thank you for your support fritz
Best regards
Ben
hi, i think we come closer. if i remember right, the first cd rom drives came up in ca. 1993 - and they sometimes had exotic cd rom drivers for each different cd rom. and the first cd rom drives supported only (ca.) 640 mb, i cdirc instead of 700 mb. and you had to jumper them as master/slave on the backside of the cd rom.
so it would be helpful to see what happens if you simply copy the whole content of the cd on the hd, e.g. to a folder, test with xcopy or doszip. if there are problems, fdimples may not be the problem, but a 30 years old cd rom drive.
if this copying does not work it may be that a special cd rom driver is needed, maybe it helps to find out the producer of the cd rom driver. another possibility is that the cd rom drive became dirty inside so open it and blow throgh it, blase einfach mal stark durch und schaue, ob die cd auflage, meistens ein gummi, sauber ist. eventually carefully clean it.
summary, copy all files and folders from cd to a folder on c:\ , if there are problems, the cd rom is the problem, if not, start setup from your test folder, but do not run fisk and format, otherwise you destroy the partition and the files you copied before.

Hi Fritz,
the jumper on the CD-ROM is set to slave, my HDD is working as Master, both share the same IDE Cable. I also thought about using my Soundcard IDE socket for the CD-ROM, but the system stops with an BIOS Error for the HDD Controller if I remove the CD-ROM from the IDE, so I was not going on with that try.
But now I have another solution.
I use the LITE-ON CD-ROM 40x Drive from the year 2000 I already used at the beginning, but now with the live CD.
FDIMPLES works now quick an reliable during a first test.
Is it right, that I can Install all packages with fdimples to get a Full FreeDOS like with the full installation which is not working on my system?
Because then I would stop searching for the reason why the full installation is not working.

hi, i am not absolutely sure if I understood you correct.
you used two different cd rom drives? and it works with one of them?
fdimples started from hd should support the cd and install everything that is on cd - or the programs that you have chosen. it can also remove programs.
but even the life cd is only a part, there is also a bonus cd available that you can install, eventually in parts - with fdimples.
as a next you could install additional programs via internet and fdnpkg.
but this is not so simple as you may think as you need a network connection on the old machine and the correct network driver. this is very tricky for a beginner. i must admit that I cannot really help you with this.
if you have plans to do this, i recommend to install a virtual machine on your win/linux/mac computer, i recommend virtual box, simple to handle, create a 2gb virtual hd and install the full cd on the vm. freedos knows the network settings for most virtual machines automatically, and if you run a full installation, network is installed automatically. result is that you can run fdnpkg(16) at once. even some old browsers should work, but do not expect to see a modern one.
do not insert the cd in your real win etc. machine, this may destroy your system!!!, but use the iso file WITHIN virtualbox, something like playing with an old os on your new computer - but within virtualbox. if you do not yet know virtualbox, test it first! virtual box supports installing linux and many other exotic systems, e.g. os/2.
Fritz
Perfect, thank you fritz especially for the part with the network and the VM.
Perhaps a project for the future.
I have used VirtualBox a couple of years ago, in my memory a good system for testing several things.
Best regards
Ben
