I am trying to install FreeDOS 1.2 to VirtualBox. After pressing "enter" to accept the install to hard drive option, I get what you seein the attachment. Is there any way to get over this? I currently have MS-DOSs 5.0 and 6.22 installed.

Cheers

What version of the installer did you use? We recommend the CDROM installer for most users. The “standard” CDROM image should work on most computers and PC emulators. Older computers may need the “legacy” CDROM image instead.

I think you tried to install the legacy CDROM image. Try the standard image instead.

The only difference between legacy and standard is the boot method. (But they both install the same FreeDOS.) Some older computer cannot use the boot method used in the standard image, so we use a different boot method for legacy systems.

I was having the problem with the standard CD ROM ISO. I did try the legacy image to see if it would work better, but it fared worse in that it did not get to the first screen.

The image I sent was of course a still shot. Here it was scrolling up the screen continuously.

Interesting. There shouldn't be any special setup required to run FreeDOS in VirtualBox, except to limit CPU usage and support network (neither is the issue you have here).

You might see these instructions to install FreeDOS in VirtualBox and see if these help.

    Jim,

I am happy to run any tests you may like me to. I backup daily and have no problem doing anything dangerous.

I may try a different VM, but some of them spawn loads of services, which I don't like. I may also install it to a dedicated parition of my hard drive.

    Cheers

    Hi!

I also came to report installation issues with VirtualBox. I first tried with "standard" installer (I folowed official installation instructions for VirtualBox), and I got an error, shown in the attachment.

Then, I tried with "legacy" installer, and I got different error:

Unfortunatelly, this method of installation is not supported on this hardware platform. Please try a different installation method.

Finally, I tried with floppy & "standard" installer images both loaded. And the installation succeeded, but from the second time, because the first time it stucked at "Gathering information..." screen.

BTW, I'm running the latest version of VirtualBox (5.2.16) on Windows 10. I hope my feedback will help you to resolve this issue in the future.

    Best regards,
    Ebu

There are some suggestions and notes on this similar bug report that might help you:

    Hi Jim,

Putting 'raw' in the memdisk boot argument worked for me. The reboot after partitioning will fail as, IIRC, one does not have the opportunity to put in 'raw' a second time. I just rebooted and did so.

My system is an original Intel i7 860. Thought I'd mention it as there was mention of the issue being hardware-related. If you want any further information on my system, please feel free to ask me.

    Thanks

Closing this bug since it's really a regression in VirtualBox. We've added a note on the FreeDOS website to let users know that VirtualBox has a problem, and the workaround.
