No

I tried to not use weird characters (ú, -) but even that way declaring independence does absolutely nothing. I tried re-loading the game deleting units, everything. In a different game as Spain it works perfectly. The only similar bug report I saw was concerning denmark but apparently that had to do with non-unicode characters and in here it doesn't work even if I use ascii for the name and endonym.

Nevermind, I realised it is the same bug (as https://sourceforge.net/p/freecol/bugs/3347/) when I read the changelog for 1.2.0 (which for some reason won't work on my computer "Failed to launch JVM " so I had been using 1.1.0. I'll try https://sourceforge.net/p/freecol/discussion/141200/thread/5a304b99/ to mend it.

It worked: Open the .fsg file using 7zip, then go to savefile.xml and right click then "View".* My username for the savefile was "João de Assís" (idk just a random name that I came up w/ bc I thought it sounded portuguese-y) so I clicked ctrl+b to search (would be ctrl+f in other devices ig? just go edit then search that also works) and searched "Jo" there were two entries for "João de Assís" so I changed both to "Joao de Assis"

edit: * in my case clicking "Edit" would open it on LibreOffice calc and it would show as empty so "View" is what made it open in notepad, maybe for you it works if you click on "Edit"
