As I was the user who posted the feature request in question, I may try to explain why I think commandline operation might be useful; even on Windows. I frequently need to quickly open a firebird db for testing or sent by a customer. One of the most convenient ways to do this is doubleclicking the database file. This is possible when registering flamerobin as OPEN action for .fdb Files but I need to be able to specify the database on the commandline. Also the ability to specify username / password in environment variables (as mentioned by another post) would help. Other db specific settings like charset are always the same in my case, so using some defaults for these would be ok. For me one of the main advantages of Firebird compared to other db servers is that each database is fully contained in 1 database file and can be moved, copied etc. easily. The commandline feature in FlameRobin would complement this. I cannot comment on the single/multiple instances question as I don't know the internals of FlameRobin, but I think the way of handling the cmdline database connections as "temporary" connection, as proposed by Micheal seems quite reasonable to me.
