Equalizer APO always, everywhere - how?

    Hey!

I absolutely love Equalizer APO! Flattening response curves in any device gives such a huge boost of sound experience that it's unspeakable. I want it always, everywhere! How can I have that?

My sources: external sound card running on Windows, Android mobile, sometimes maybe even Linux, but I can avoid that.

My idea: run any analog audio through an external portable sound card plugged in to a dedicated Win10 portable device, stream input to output with Equalizer APO on the way. It's like making your own dedicated full fledged equalizer with builtin battery.

Do you have a better idea?
What Win10 device do you suggest? A netbook? Ideapad 100s looks nice for this purpose.

I don't know how you are using your mobile but I don't think that it would be practical to carry a netbook or something else that is much bigger than the mobile itself when you are just using the mobile.

For Android there is ViPER4Android, which allows using convolution system-wide, but it requires root. If you are using parametric EQ filters with E-APO you should be able to generate an equivalent impulse response that you can use with the convolver. (I can tell you how)

Of course, I don't want to dissuade you from using E-APO, but in that case it's not really practical in my opinion.

This sounds awesome, exactly what I need! :D Could you give me a few pointers how to make a setting for convolver from my EQ? I can use Adobe Audition (I mix and master from time to time).

As of E-APO: currently I have this setup: music player -> E-APO -> virtual cable in -> virtual cable out -(repeater)-> standard audio output -(SoundWire)-> my phone. SoundWire catches sound before E-APO modifies it, so I had to make a software loop.

I also thought about getting Windows 10 desktop in super compressed PC - Intel Compute Stick + powerbank + DAC. But then I'd have to use it as a real sound source or have a DAC+ADC (one device or two) to use it as an Equalizer for any input. Haven't found a device that would be good for this purpose. All ADC are too big, too bad or support Apple only.

Anyway your solution seems best, I'll root my device as soon as I can :D

You can use the Benchmark application that comes with Equalizer APO to create an impulse response. First, download a set of dirac impulses from http://www.noisetime.com/impulsecreation.html (dirac.zip). Choose the one that fits your needs, for example dirac16_44_stereo.wav should work. If your Equalizer APO configuration contains any Device command, you first need to add the Benchmark device to it, like this:

Device: High Definition Audio-Gerät Lautsprecher; Benchmark

This is needed because the Benchmark application will act like a virtual audio device called "Benchmark". If you don't have any Device command, you don't need to change anything.

Finally, open a Command Shell in C:\Program Files\Equalizer APO and type:

    Benchmark.exe -i dirac16_44_stereo.wav -o ir.wav

You have to specify the correct paths to the wav file, for example by dragging it in from Windows Explorer or putting it into C:\Program Files\Equalizer APO. If you don't have write access to that folder, you also need to specify a path for ir.wav, for example %TEMP%\ir.wav.

The resulting file should contain a usable impulse response then. You can check its frequency response by using the frequency analysis of Audacity or the (better) equivalent in Audition.

You need to copy the file to <storage>/ViPER4Android/Kernel/ on your device.

Thank you! I will dig into it most probably in the evening today or tomorrow. A few more questions:
    1. will EQ work if I connect a DAC or DAP through miniUSB?
    2. same but through bluetooth?
    3. "Through Convolution, samples with effects such as equalizer, surround, reverberation, tube etc" - whoah, can I really add tube harmonics? O.o A builtin plugin in Audition, "Mastering", has awesome sounding "retro" and "tape" effects, check them out yourself :)

E-APO should work for all kinds of audio devices as long as standard audio playback methods are used that do not bypass the processing (e.g. ASIO is not possible). In the end, you will have to try it.

      1. [...] - whoah, can I really add tube harmonics?

I don't have experience with that, so again, just try it ;)
