Hi, I use the APO on my video editing/general purpose PC & I love the effect it has on the music tracks.
I therefore tried to load it as an audio plug-in on my music DAW PC to see if its magic could be unleashed as a tool on actual recordings.
Alas, as far as I can see, it's not possible.
Is this correct or has someone had better luck?
Yours gratefully...

It is not possible to just load the equalizerapo.dll (totally different stories) nor I think plug.in API supports APO layer functionality.
You can stream DAW output (DAW set to use WASAPI Shared mode device for playback is needed) through APO layer and record the output (IIRC Voxengo Recorder VST works in this but you need to go with virtual audio cables then) but, that's quite complex task in DAW work (especially if you need to achieve this in real-time work).
EqualizerAPO implements general purpose filters you can find in VST world quite easy ... it's just how to transfer all settings from EqualizerAPO to these plug-ins... .
