Hello With which versions has the Firedocs eLML editor been tested? http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/tools_editor.html says that Firedocs should run on Firefox 4 and above. I tried Firefox 11 (MSWindows, http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) Firefox crashed. Firedocs in Firefox 9 did not crash but it did hang after opening an eLML XML file. To install I had downloaded firedocs-1.8.xpi and dropped it on a running the Firefox instance. Kind regards Hannes Hirzel |

Hello I downloaded eLML 8.0 and Easy eLML (http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/tools_easyelml.html, link to sourceforge) With Easy eLML and eLML 8.0 it was straightforward to set up an eLML authoring environment on a new computer. I do not use Firedocs yet (see next question). I just used Notepad++. This question is about setting up and customizing a template in eLML. The steps I did so far are recorded below and the two screen shots show the setup. Thank you for the answer in advance Hannes Hirzel ======================== Steps to create a project 'Prova' with a template 'prova' ======================== 1. copy folder 'MyProject', rename it to e.g. 'Prova' and keep it on the same level as 'MyProject'. 2. copy folder 'elml' from' 'eLMLv8-00/elml/_templates' into 'eLMLv8-00/Prova/_templates', rename it to 'prova'. 3. Adapt the prova folder by opening 'C:\eLML_v8-00\Prova\_templates\prova\images\logo.gif' and change 'elml' to 'prova' in a paint program. 4. To see if this has done the job, I did a test production run in EasyElml and 'generate' for 'Output media' 'HTML'. Result: The layout is not shown at all; no CSS stylesheet 5. I looked at the source in the browser and found out that it links to a stylesheet ' <link rel="stylesheet" href="../../../_templates/elml/elml.css" type="text/css"', i.e. to the tample folder 'elml' and not 'prova'. As 'elml' does not exist in my '_templates' folder there is no style information available. 6. I open 'C:\eLML_v8-00\Prova\_templates\prova\online.xsl' in a text editor (e.g. Notepad++ on MSWindows, http://portableapps.com/apps/development/notepadpp_portable). 7. I realize that on line 7 there is ' <xsl:param name="layout" select="'elml'"/>'. So I change 'elml' to 'prova' on this line and save the file 'online.xsl'. 8. I rerun EasyElml and 'generate' for 'Output media' 'HTML'. Result: The new Layout is shown. I understand that I now can make local changes in the folder 'prova' which show up. Question: As for the setup of the template in connection with EasyElml : Are the steps abouve all I have to do for the general setup of a new template besides local changes in the 'prova' folder including in particular the file 'online.xsl'? |

Dear eLML Newsletter subscribers, I am happy to announce a new eLML 8 version today! The big new thing is that eLML offers now a mobile view of your lesson based on jQuery Mobile. Using the already existing eBook converter (based on ePub) and the new mobile view, you can now serve your clients with lessons optimized for both tablets like iPads and also Smartphones like iPhones or Android devices! To see the mobile version in action point your iPhone or Android phone to http://www.elml.org/website/en/ and you are automatically redirected to the mobile view! You can also use the mobile view link in the footer of the eLML website with any desktop browser. Whats new in the eLML 8 release? 1.The Mobile View (based on jQuery Mobile): http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_mobile.html 2. New versions of firedocs and EasyELML available! http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/unit_tools.html (see comment below) 3. Many bugfixes, improvements and updates. Too much to list them all here :-) Comments about eLML tools: - EasyELML: The author Michael Ziege has released a new version a month ago and it should run stable on Windows and Mac OSX now. - The latest firedocs 1.8 version runs on any Firefox above version 4. Be aware that on Firefox 10 (due to a caching problem) the eLML editor firedocs crashes at first. What you have to do is following: 1. Enter "about:config" in your address bar and continue after the warning. 2. In the configuration parameter list do a right click and choose "New... Boolean" to create a new parameter. 3. Now enter "nglayout.debug.disable_xul_cache" as parameter name and set it to "true". After that restart Firefox and it should work again. Sorry about that complicated bugfix... - Template Builder: Thomas Linowsky, the author of the Template Builder, has told me that he is working on a totally new release and will have a prototype running soon. He'll certainly announce the beta release via the eLML-Users list. - Lenya CMS AddOn development has been terminated because the Lenya CMS project is not active anymore :-( So much from me. After nearly 10 years this will be my last mail as eLML project leader (see my last posting). From now on Immo Wille and Alberto Sanz are running the show here at the University of Zurich :-) Have fun with eLML! Dear eLML-Users After ten years I am leaving the University of Zurich and switching back to my original field of study Environmental Sciences and Climatology. I will be working for the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology starting on March 1st. Being one of the founders of the eLML project (together with Susanne Bleisch, FHNW, and other colleagues from the GITTA project, see http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/unit_about.html) I very much hope that the project will continue to live on and prosper :-) At the University of Zurich we have Immo Wille as new eLML project coordinator. Alberto Sanz will continue to answer the support address el...@id... together with Immo Wille. Responsible for strategic decisions is the new head of OLAT: Alan Moran. He will contact the eLML community soon with some comments of his own and probably also organize an eLML users meeting at the University of Zurich (at least for those of you involved in an UZH-project). Of course eLML is an open source project and lives also outside the University of Zurich. For a list of past or current project members check the eLML website (http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/website_contact.html) or the Sourceforge project members page (http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=123157). I still have some new eLML features developed (e.g. mobile view) that haven't been published yet and plan to do another major eLML release in February. Check out my XING-, LinkedIn- and Twitter-Links below if you want to keep in touch! I'll also have a small farewell party on February 8th in a Bar in Zurich! Contact me if you are from Zurich and would like to attend! Greetings from Zurich Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users I finally completed the transformation files for mobile (smartphone) format and committed the XSLT files to the core yesterday. The technology used is jQuery and jQuery Mobile (http://jquerymobile.com) where the final version 1.0 was just released a week ago. Now I am looking for beta-testers that are willing to give me feedback before going public with the announcement. If you want to test it right away, point your Smartphone (iPhone, Android, etc.) to the mobile version of the eLML website: http://www.elml.org/website/en/mobile/index.html --> How does it work? You need to have the developer release of eLML installed to try the new mobile transformation. Update the core and make sure that you have a "mobile" folder in the presentation folder of the eLML core (next to online, print etc.). Now use this elml.xsl-file to transform your lesson and look for a new folder also called "mobile" within your lessons subfolder (next to the html-folder etc.). Open the index.html with your mobile phone (or iPad) and have a detailed look at the optimized mobile version of your lesson. --> Whats the difference to ePub? ePub is an XML/HTML-based format to package eBooks and the format became even more popular when Apple started to use it in their iPads. eLML also supports ePub so you can transform both formats and see for yourself which format you like better. The advantage with ePub is that you have one (ZIP) file that you can distribute, the disadvantage is that you have to do more (CSS) styling yourself than with jQuery Mobile (ok, some of you would call this advantage, its up to you :-) --> Why didnt you use SenchaTouch? Because I once went to a jQuery Mobile presentation and I immediately liked the simplicity, clarity and nice integration into HTML5 (a format also supported by eLML since this year). But maybe one day I'll also add support for SenchaTouch. Or maybe one of you will? :-) Greetings from foggy Zurich Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users We have a completely new Firedocs available. Most of the changes from 1.5.x are "under the hood", a so called refactoring, but there are also lots of bug fixes included which I won't list all here. --> Faster, more stable, more reliable :-) Update - as always - directly in Firefox under the "AddOn" Menu or by downloading Firedocs via the eLML website: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/tools_editor.html Have fun! Dear eLML-Users Since I didnt get an overwhelming response after my last email about your thoughts on eLML's current status and future (only two replies came in) I am trying something new: I will be available for a video chat session on Google Hangout this Thursday (29th of September) at 2pm (Central Europe Time, equals to noon in GMT). Up to 10 people (preferably with video camera) can join the Google Hangout Session and we can talk about eLML. I will prepare some questions but I would be interested to hear from you how you are using eLML and what you think are the strenghts and weaknesses of eLML. We will speak German if everyone understands it, else we'll switch to English. To see the Google Hangout link for the session on Thursday you will probably have to follow my G+ stream. In case you dont find me in Google Plus under "Joël Fisler", try my Gmail address "joe...@gm...". Hope to see you in my "eLML Hangout" this Thursday! Dear eLML-Users We are currently thinking about where we should head to with eLML in the future. Since this is an open source project and since you are an eLML user (else you would not be on the eLML-Users list), I would be curious to know what you think. I am currently writing a status report and it would be nice to have your input. The report focuses on both the current status of eLML and a possible future of eLML. Current status means: - What are the strengths of eLML? Why are you using it? - What are the weaknesses of eLML? What is annoying you or driving you mad? - External factors: What are the opportunities (chances) or threats (risks) for eLML? As you can guess these questions lead to a SOWT analysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWOT_analysis) :-) And then of course I am curious to know where we as a project should head to: - Where should the focus of future eLML development be? - What parts can be omitted? - Where would you see eLML e.g. in the year 2015 and why? Any input is valuable for me. You can either write back to the list (as a member of this list you can also write to the list) or you can write me personally. If you write me personally you can also answer in German of course, if your answer goes to the list, we prefer English. Hi there I just uploaded the latest eLML-Firedocs-Editor Release on Sourceforge. You can either get it directly in Firefox via the "add-ons" menu (search for updates) or you can download it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/elml/files/ The big change is that we have finally managed to make it compatible with Firefox 4. Unfortunately Firefox has been changing their plugin-infrasctruture with nearly every release and therefore you might have to either activate (default) or deactivate (via the "add-ons" menu) the "Next Generation Plugin API" in the Firedocs-Settings. Also in the "Add-ons" menu you have to check if the Java Plugin is installed and active. A full checklist for Firedocs can be found here: http://www.unicms.uzh.ch/about/editors/firedocs/problems.html (unfortunately only in German at the moment, we will translate it as soon as possible) Please remember that starting with Firedocs 1.5.x only Firefox 3.6 and above are supported. If you are still working on an older Firefox release you will need to download the latest Firedocs 1.3.x release from Sourceforge (see link above). As always, if you need support email us at el...@id... and if you found a bug publish it here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=123157&atid=695590 (choose category "Firedocs") Have fun! Dear David, This is not the same translation file then the one that you are working on! I sent you the translation files for the Firedocs eLML Editor and Angeles was working on the core eLML translation. The core translation file is a small file that contains keys for terms like glossary, bibliography, table of content, goals etc. So you still have some work to do :-) Yes the Windows version of EasyELML is available now: http://sourceforge.net/projects/elml/files/EasyElml/ I plan to update the eLML website and have a new stable release within the next three weeks. That's fantastic! I had the "job" to translate it but I'm very happy you did it! Angeles, Where are you working? Joel, is there a complete .exe file of elml for Windows machines? Dear Angeles, Thanks for your translation! Can you send me the file? Then I can include it directly in the core on Sourceforge and its available to anyone. eLML looks at the folder name to determine what language it is. In the download package there is the "gitta" project. Open e.g. the lesson "IntroToDBS". In there you will find subfolders "de", "en" and "fr". These are the language subfolder (German, English and French). Hi! My name is Mª Ángeles and I'm doing some researchs for a project in which I'm envolved nowadays. This project is about eLML and I'm trying to create a lesson in spanish language which is not supported yet. I have copied the file "term_en_ALL.xml" from the folder named "core" and renamed it as "terms_es_ALL.xml" in the same folder, but my lesson still not working as expected. What can I do to get it? |

Dear eLML-Users, First release of 2011, yeah! So what have we changed? A quick overview: - Multimedia elements (video, audio etc.) are now displayed using placeholders. This is faster and safer. - Latest schema changes are reflected in this release - Some minor layout changes - Fixed many bugs As always: This release is faster, better, nicer and much cooler than the one before. Use it! :-) As always 2: If you have Firedocs already installed, go to the "AddOns" menu under "Extras" and search for updates. Dear eLML-Users We (University of Zurich) are trying to find a solution for our problem described below. Please comment directly here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=695593&aid=3139005&group_id=123157 Looking forward to hear from you if this is a problem that other also have and if you have a better idea for a solution. Bye Joël Our problem: > The University of Zurich (UZH) uses eLML for the creation of various manuals, documentations etc. One example is the OLAT Manual (User Help) where we have two versions: A version for UZH staff members and one for the open source community. The differences are minor things like where to get support, what to do if you cannot login, some OLAT features that are disabled at the UZH are not mentioned in the manual etc. Furthermore out of the same eLML lesson we create two types of short help (Kurzanleitungen). Certain learningObjects like "how to create a course", "how to create a test" etc. where we guide the user through various steps, those learning objects are also used to create single PDF documents "how to's". Of course at the beginning of those HowTo's we need paragraphs like "If you want to create a course follow these steps" or similar, sentences that are not used in the full manual because there the context is clear and doesn't need to be repeated again. > > Create four versions from one eLML lesson: So to make a long story short: we have one XML file and create four versions with it. We now need a way to mark stuff that is only visible in the long manual, in the short manual and in both either in the UZH version or the Open Source Community version. This can be a paragraph, a clarify or a whole learningObject. We did some hacking with the "role" attribute and the "cssClass" attribute but we now need a better and more intuitive way to handle this. Do other projects have the same problems? > > Translation: Furthermore we need an attribute where we can mark certain paragraphs or learningObjects etc. that have changed or are new and need to be translated. Our manuals are available in four languages and translators need to know which part has changed and needs to be translated. We created a small software that takes an eLML lesson as input, reads out all the as "to translate" marked parts, displays them with an input form field below and the translator can directly write into the field using this web-application (no need for XML). Here again, we need an attribute to mark elements as "to translate". > > Generic Attributes? A generic way to do this would be to have custom attributes added to all eLML elements (custom1, custom2, custom3, ...). Not very nice... Maybe someone has a better idea. Thoughts? Comments? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users I have been asked what eLML is doing concerning Mobile Devices. Here's a short list of projects that I know of (maybe you know something else or are developing your own stuff - please share with us!). 1. eBook: Converting your lessons from eLML into the ePub format is one way of delivering your content on a mobile device: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_epub.html These eBooks can be viewed on iPads, iPhones, Android devices etc. using apps like Stanza, Apple iBook etc. Unfortunately the current ePub-standard only supports SVG animations and no e.g. movies or flash animations. This should be changing with ePub 3.0 due for next spring and we will upgrade the ePub converter in eLML as soon as the new standard is out. Here is more information about the ePub 3.0 draft: http://code.google.com/p/epub-revision/ 2. Content Package Viewer/Player for iPad: frentix GmbH developed a content package player/viewer for eLML content packages. Here you can see our demo lesson "Introduction into Database Systems" and other examples as an iPad optimized version: http://devel.frentix.com/fxplayer/example/courses/index.html Of course if you view this on an iPad (or Android Tablet or similar) you can slide, zoom, touch click, set bookmarks etc. The content package viewer for iPad is not open source, if you are interested in using it contact Florian Gnägi <co...@fr...> for details! 3. iPhone Version: Last year I was playing around with iPhone JavaScript Libraries and created an iPhone version of the OLAT news list: http://www.olat.org/website/en/html/iphone.html This was meant as a prototype for a Google Summer of Code project where a student could e.g. develop something based on Sencha Touch (http://www.sencha.com/products/touch/) or similar. Unfortunately we were not chosen as mentoring organization and thus it remained a prototype. But maybe you would like to work on this project or know a student that could do this as a thesis work? So much for the moment, please use this mailing list if you have something to add or comment. Thanks. Dear eLML-Users Allyn Radford in his article "Lessons from an open world" writes about how packaging standards like IMS Content Package or SCORM are outdated and how structured XML approaches like eLML (or CNXML) are much more promising. Read it yourself here (take a while to load the entire magazine first): http://www.acs.org.au/iage/201010/#/30/ (page 28) Bye Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Hello all eLML Users This Message will send in German, because it is for a German Workshop. Please excuse this. Dear eLML-Users, Most of you use Apache FOP to generate PDFs from your eLML lessons. You might have started with the rather crappy 0.2 version and upgraded to the better 0.9 or now (finally) 1.0 release of Apache FOP. Or you might have used Oxygen where new releases automatically include new FOP versions. If your interested to read about the history and future of Apache FOP I recommend this (Swiss!) Blogpost: http://www.jeremias-maerki.ch/blog/2010/10/24/10-years-in-open-source Its interesting to see that one of the main developers of FOP is here in Switzerland and that e.g. the Swiss Post co-funded the improvement of FOP. I like that :-) By the way: This post also motivated me to do some minor bugfixes in the core :-) If you use the developer version of eLML be sure to do a cvs update before creating PDFs. And make sure you use the latest 1.0 release of Apache FOP (and also make sure that in your config.xml you put the correct FOP version, else the PDF Bookmarks wont work).
