Hey eLML-gang, I just uploaded a new eLML Firedocs Editor. Actual release is 1.3b05. - If you already have Firedocs installed: Go to "AddOns" in Firedocs "Tools" Menu and choose "Find Updates" to load the new editor. - If you have not yet installed Firedocs go to www.elml.org and find the editor under "Tools" The main bugfix is that you can now enter glossary, furtherReading and bibliography elements in your lesson. With the previous beta releases this was not always possible. Dear eLML-Users, Please find enclosed a link to the test version of "Easy eLML". Easy eLML provides an easy (sic!) to use crossplatform compatible interface to the various tools, xml parsers, xslt transformers and so on, used behind the scenes of eLML to produce an e-learning lesson. The main objective of Easy eLML is to make the installation and setup process of eLML for end users as straightforward as possible. So among other things, it's not mandatory anymore to have eclipse and/or an xml editor installed to produce a valid e-learning lesson out of a xml file. Instead open source editions of different parsers/transformers are batteries included (see legal notes attached). Easy eLML remembers user decisions and workspace locations, and allows a centralized management of the various other helpers in the eLML framework as for example "Firedocs Editor". Easy eLML should therefore not be seen as yet another tool for eLML but as an inegrative platform for the existing toolset. As said, this release is still beta. Any feedback and suggestions would be highly appreciated and helpful to know if this is a way to lower the initial hurdle for using eLML. A Windows version will follow soon. https://sourceforge.net/projects/elml/files/EasyElml/EasyElml-0.4.0.dmg/download Regards, Michael -- Michael Ziege, eLearning Koordinator, Fachbereich IV Mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät der Universität Zürich (MNF) Winterthurerstr. 190, Y 25 K 08 CH-8057 Zürich Tel: +41 44 635 5261 Mail: mic...@ge... Dear eLML-Users I just released a new version of the Firedocs eLML Editor. In Firefox go to "Tools" and open the "Add-ons" window. Click on "Find updates" in the bottom left corner and you should get the latest 1.3b04 release. Or go to our Sourceforge project page to download the editor. The new release contains bugfixes, improvements and most of all is now fully compatible with Firefox 3.6.4 and above (I tested it with the latest 3.6.6 release). Have fun! Dear eLML-User, After one year of hard work, the eLML team is proud to present the new eLML 6 version! Here are the highlights: 1. Create eBooks directly from your lessons (for iPad etc.) 2. Create newer XHTML 1.1 Strict code 3. New and faster Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor 4. New feature for referencing and highlighting content 5. Now supporting latest YAML 3.2 release 6. SCORM-transformation reworked and vastly improved And to make it even easier for you we have released eLML now under the more liberal Apache 2 License (not GPL anymore)! ------------------------------------------------ Let me just briefly outline the new features. 1. eBooks: With eLML you can now create the popular ePub-format for eBooks. This means you can view your lesson on your iPad or iPhone or any other popular eBook-reader. For more information check: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_epub.html You can also download entire ELML website as an eBook (the link is in the footer of each page) and view it with your favorite eBook-Reader. This is the first release of the ePub-format converter for eLML and we will continue developing improvements of this converter. So please send us comments and feedback. 2. XHTML 1.1 Strict: The ePub-standard is based on XHTML 1.1 Strict HTML code. Since eLML in the past was working with the more flexible XHTML 1.0 Transiational standard, we had to create a new converter for XHTML 1.1 Strict. So now you can choose if you want to create XHTML 1.0 Transitional or 1.1 Strict code in eLML. We took the advantage of including a lot of code improvements into this rebuild. To read more about this, point your browser to: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_xhtml.html 3. Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor: The faster and improved Firedocs 1.3 eLML Editor has already been released but we now officially included it into the eLML 6 download package. Check the older eLML news for more information about the new 1.3 series. 4. Referencing and highlighting parts of your lesson: With the new labelRef-attribute you can reference other parts of your lesson. A language course at our university uses this feature for highlighting verbs, nouns, adjectives etc. If the students e.g. hoovers over the word "noun" then the nound in the foreign language sentence visually stands out. Read more about the new labelRef-attribute here: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/manual_attributes.html 5. YAML 3.2 Support We are still very fond of the CSS framework YAML. The new eLML 6 release contains the latest updates and improvements to make eLML compatible with the YAML 3.2, the newest version currently out. Please note that we cannot include YAML into the eLML download package, so you have to download it yourself and included it into eLML. Check the readme.txt file that is included in the eLML package. http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_yaml.html 6. SCORM Updated: The eLML to SCORM converter has been totally rewritten and creates now SCORM 1.2 files that are compatible with all the major LMS. To read more about creating IMS or SCORM content packages or to download a demo package and test it with our LMS go to: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_cp.html Finally: Bugfixes, improvements, and updated manual During the last year many improvements and bugfixes have been included into the new eLML 6 release. If you are interested in details, please go to our Sourceforge project website and search the Bugtracker and Feature Tracker for more information. The JavaScripts for lightwindow, selfCheck and glossary terms have been improved, the print and other version were updated and last but not least the whole website and manual is now up-to-date containing all the information you need for working with eLML 6. Have fun! We love to hear from you and get feedback! Contact us at el...@id... Dear eLML-Users I am very happy to announce that after some weeks of work I just published my first version of the "eLML to ePub" converter. Using this XSLT file you can create eBooks and use them e.g. in the iBook application of your iPad etc. Here is how you currently convert your eLML lesson into an eBook (this only works with the developer release!!): 1. Update the "core" folder using CVS. You should see a /core/presentation/epub/ folder now. 2. Create a new transformation scenario "ebooks" using the file /core/presentation/epub/elml.xsl 3. Open your lesson.xml file and transform it using this new transformation scenario 4. Zip your whole folder /mylesson/language/ and make sure that the folders "html", "images", "META-INF", the mimetype file etc. are in the root of your ZIP file! 5. rename the zip file to mylesson.epub Now you have your eBook! Just to make sure that you understand step 4 correctly, here are my commands I used for creating an ePub version of the eLML website: > cd elml/website/en/ > zip -r elml_website.epub * I think it works already pretty well. My iPad has not arrived yet (I ordered the 3G one and should get it next week :-) so I cannot test it on an iPad yet. But with e.g. "Calibre" on OSX it works already pretty good. One problem I am aware of is that in eLML we are referencing images from within the "html" folder one level up and then into the "images" folder (like this: ../images/mypicture.jpg) and some eBook readers dont like the ../ reference. They want the HTML-Files to be in the root folder. I dont know yet how many readers are behaving like this but I would like to hear from you if pictures are appearing or not. PLEASE DO PROVIDE ME FEEDBACK if you are using this ePub converter. I will not release it officially before the mid of May so there is still some time left for feedback. I plan to release it for the IMS Learning Impact Award finals in Long Beach (May 17th) where eLML is a finalist. Dear eLML-Users and Newsletter-Subscribers Today the open source license of the eLML (eLesson Markup Language) project changed from the restrictive GPL to the more open Apache 2 license. This means that in future you will be able to use eLML also for commercial products without the need to contribute back your developments based on the eLML project. For us it means that we can start working on integrations of eLML into our open source learning management system OLAT (www.olat.org), also released under the open source Apache 2 license. Nevertheless I would like to stress that we are still happy to hear from you, are interested to see how you are using eLML and what you are developing with it. So the switch to the more liberal Apache license does not mean that we are not interested in cooperations, on the contrary. As you already know we can also list your project on the success stories page if you are interested: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/about_success_stories.html Feel free to contact me for any further questions. I would like to use this opportunity to remind you that we have just released a completely rebuilt eLML Editor based on the the new Firedocs 1.3 version. This Firefox plugin is updated automatically if you have a previous version installed or you can download it from the following page: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/tools_editor.html Greetings from Los Angeles Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +1 (774) 2FISLER or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Hi Andreas, A quick reply with latest status updates from my side. First of all, I am happy to read that you still work with eLML. I thought you already gave up open source and went back to commercial :-) On 15.03.2010, at 04:43, Andreas Wittke wrote: > First I agree with the other guys for a better editor. The editor needs a WYSIWYG interface and a better support for Copy-Paste (e.g. bold, italic and some other basic like tables, lists elements from Word or Open Office). Copy-Paste has been working in the Editor for a long time, at least for things that can be set with the formatted-element (bold, italic etc.). More complex things like tables are not (yet?) supported, I dont know how complex that would be. You should monitor the following bug to get status updates about this: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2204386&group_id=123157&atid=695590 Nevertheless, we certainly welcome a redevelopment of the open office plugin from your side! > In Lübeck we want to redevelop the Open Office plugin. We found a student who will work on it for the next 6 months. He will start on the 1st of April. He will start a project blog about it. Cool, share the link as soon as its up and running! > Another idea for e new output format will be the EPUB format for the eBook reader. eBooks will be one of the most increasing areas of e-learning in the next years, and for publishing ebooks on Amazon you will need the EPUB format. I don't know which format the iPad will support. Most of the eBooks could handle PDF, but not the amazon store yet. You might remember that we had that on the list for last year and you might wonder why not this year. The reason is very simple: I already did create the ePub converter. Last year I was not sure yet which eBook format eLML should support but since Apple announced the support for ePub (which was also my favorite format because its XML based but since Amazon Kindle did not support it I was reluctant to use it) the decision was easy. When creating the list of GSoC projects this year and doing some research about the ePub format I found out that its not much more than a content package with a different manifest file, I thought that this is too easy for a GSoC project and in less than one day I had my first eLML-ePub-Lesson running. The beauty of XML :-) Anyway, I did not plan to announce this yet because I want to first test it on a an iPad (which I already ordered and I should get it in two weeks, we'll see...). So unless there is an urgent need for this converter, please be patient and wait till April or maybe even May until I release a first version of the ePub converter. Hello Joel, Dear eLML Users Sorry for the late response, but I have some new ideas and info for the eLML community and it is not too late for distributing them. First I agree with the other guys for a better editor. The editor needs a WYSIWYG interface and a better support for Copy-Paste (e.g. bold, italic and some other basic like tables, lists elements from Word or Open Office). In Lübeck we want to redevelop the Open Office plugin. We found a student who will work on it for the next 6 months. He will start on the 1st of April. He will start a project blog about it. Another idea for e new output format will be the EPUB format for the eBook reader. eBooks will be one of the most increasing areas of e-learning in the next years, and for publishing ebooks on Amazon you will need the EPUB format. Dear eLML-Users I am thinking about changing the eLML license from GPL to Apache. Both licenses are open source licenses but Apache is less strict that GPL. The problem with GPL is that: - creation of (commercial) proprietary software with eLML is not allowed (since everything created with GPL has to be published as GPL again) - re-distribution of eLML in other open source software like OLAT is not allowed because OLAT is Apache licensed and not GPL So to make a long story short: Apache licensed software can be included into GPL but not visa-versa because GPL is more strict than Apache. This means in the case of the University of Zurich that for example an eLML extension in OLAT would not be legal because OLAT is Apache licensed and cannot thus cannot use GPL software. So to make this all less confusing I would like to change the license of eLML to Apache. Any objections from contributors? Any other comments about that? Maybe you're interested why I chose GPL in the first place? When I created the Sourceforge project I had to choose a license for the project and the pulldown menu listed about 50 open source licenses I never heard of. The only one I ever heard of was GPL and thats why I chose it. Now that I am wiser I want to change it again :-) Here are some links: http://developer.kde.org/documentation/licensing/licenses_summary.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_License http://www.apache.org/licenses/GPL-compatibility.html If there are no strong objections I would change the license in about two weeks meaning that for Google Summer of Code projects (which start in about three weeks) combining both eLML and OLAT we would have no legal problems. I just discovered some days ago that Sourceforge has a "rating" tool for open source projects. Please take two minutes to comment about the eLML project here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/elml/reviews/ Bye Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +1 (774) 2FISLER or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users, Thanks to everyone for replying to my last email about eLML and Google Summer of Code 2010. I "synced" the suggestions with last years list and updated our "participations" page: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/about_participating.html Feel free to send comments about the projects suggested there. Today the application period for mentoring organizations start so we will make sure that this year we'll submit a full application :-) We will know on March 18th if eLML and OLAT have been accepted as mentoring organization. I'll let you know. The complete GSoC 2010 timeline can be found here: http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010/faqs#timeline Bye Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler University of Zurich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +1 (774) 2FISLER or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... hi all i definitly share the opinion of having a more streamlined editor which could serve as a front end to any scorm/ims compatible lms (via export/import) and meta data editor. i think we should have a look at what we allready have until now, with the existing tools and decide which missing pieces (workflows, concepts) have to be produced for an optimal e-content production line. a completely new functionality would be the introduction of learning paths (eg. <http://showmedo.com/learningpaths>), where several (not necessarly by the same author produced) modules could be put in relation to each other to build a learning path. the user allways knows what progress she allready made and what e-learning know how still is missing to achieve her goal. this would require both, a metadata editor and top level lesson (as proposed by christoph), to include/connect the other lessons. greetings, michael Am 03.02.10 17:36, schrieb Joël Fisler - University of Zurich: > Dear eLML-Users > eLML plans to participate at the Google Summer of Code project again this year and we are brainstorming about what we could offer as a project. Hi Joël, in my opinion there are some points of interest. - I agree to both suggestions of Benno. During the development of my problem-based-learning GIS-course based on eLML and GITTA components, I found first, that the structure of ECLASS is a fairly good first implementation of a constructivist didactic strategy in blended learning. But after struggling for now about a year with eLML (and 9 lectures + 9 exercises "pressed" into this scheme) I think it is to rigid in its formal structure. I would like to have the possibility to use the components additionally for didactic structures which are adapted to my opinion and needs. And last but not least I see a *basic necessity* for a top level (above the lesson level) to be able to integrate a logical "course control" outside a single lesson due to the fact that I want to combine lessons in a specific way. - Secondly the WYSIWYG-editor for style sheets would be great - the existing one is not only cumbersome but also buggy like hell. - I also appreciate the idea of Roland dealing with a much more sophisticated Metadata Section integrating more transparent informations of copyright, institute contributers and even more important their specific contributions. Additionally to most of the users it is not so easy to add items into the existing scheme. Personally I would like to have a section to put metadata for used data sources and the hosting locations of the lessons. - finally it would be great to improve the export schemes (I dealt with ODT PDF Latex). There are a lot of problems with figures and tables and some of the basic formatting become awful in detail - perhaps this could be integrated in the WYSIWYG (or somewhat) editor greetings Chris -- Dr Christoph Reudenbach Philipps-University of Marburg Faculty of Geography GIS and Environmental Modeling Deutschhausstr. 10 D-35032 Marburg fon: ++49.(0)6421.2824296 fax: ++49.(0)6421.2828950 Joël Fisler - University of Zurich schrieb: > Dear eLML-Users > eLML plans to participate at the Google Summer of Code project again this year and we are brainstorming about what we could offer as a project. It would be great if teacher using the LMS ILIAS could import SCORMs 1.2 or SCORMs 2004 - made with eLML. Yours, Hansjörg Lauener |

Hi Joël, I also agree with the idea to integrate a metadata editor and with your proposal for the interfaces to other systems. And maybe also an WYSIWYG-editor for style sheets and to develop own didactical course structures would be of interest!? Hi Joël What about a sophisticated metadata-editor for the annotation of the resources/contents/products? As you know, the annotation of products is not "loved" very much by the authors. Therefore, to support authors in providing useful and valid metadata would be an key factor for the quality of e-learning resources, e.g. if you want to share them, to make them searchable and classify them etc. Additionally, we could think of an more generalized editor, which can be used by and integrated into several "end-users-systems" like eLML, OLAT, other Repositories or LMS. Then, what would be needed is not only the editor itself, but also some interfaces to the other systems. This is only a very first idea, of course. Dear eLML-Users, We just released a new version of our eLML editor and will soon be able to skip the "beta" :-) The most important news is certainly that the editor is now compatible with the latest Firefox versions. Finally... Here's an overview about whats new in Firedocs eLML Editor V1.2b07: - Compatible with the latest Firefox 3.5 releases - Firedocs has been update from version 1.20 to 1.24 - Editor now allows pagebreak level set to learning object also (ID 2138269) - New "labelRef" attribute available in editor now (ID 2107545) - Faster - Lots of bugfixes If you have installed one of the last three beta versions (since beta 3) then Firefox should recognize the update itself and suggest to install the new version automatically. If that does not happen: Go to "Add-Ons" in the "Tools" menu and click on "Find updates". Please, please test the editor, use it, give us feedback using the sourceforge bugtracker: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=123157&atid=695590 Enjoy...
