Gruss Joël ENGLISH: Dear eLML-Users, We made some enhancements in the eLML core for the Lightwindow Script. If you are using Flash or Movies in Lightwindow the window size now is big enough to hopefully display the whole movie. If not you can adjust the lightindow parameter as described here on the bottom of the page: http://www.elml.org/website/en/html/output_your_template.html#your_template_lightwindow.html As always: Do a cvs update of your "core" before trying out the new enhancements. Dear eLML-Users, That's Murphy's Law: I make a release today and now the Sourceforge CVS server is down. See: http://apps.sourceforge.net/wordpress/sourceforge/ 2009-03-10: Service CVS unplanned downtime - UPDATE This outage is in-progress and we are monitoring the progress of the RAID array rebuild. Based on its current stats it looks like there will be another 30 hours or so of downtime before we can re-enable service again. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users and Newsletter-Subscribers, We are very happy to announce today a new release: eLML 5.1. This new release contains a full support for creating SCORM packages out of eLML, including time tracking , etc. You can check the "SCORM and IMS" page on the eLML website under "Output Formats" for some screenshots and more information about the implementation. Hand in hand with the continuing development of eLML we also optimize the Firedocs eLML Editor. Last week we released the Beta 6 version which contains all the new features and bugfixes of the eLML 5.1 release. Once installed in Firefox the editor add-on automatically notifies if new versions are available so you should be able to download this editor update directly from Firefoxes "Add-ons" menu. I'd like to mention that we have also been working on referencing and labels in the new release. One new feature is the possibility that one element can reference any other element in eLML using the new "labelRef" attribute. You are certainly familiar with setting labels for units, learningObjects but also for other elements like paragraph, multimedia , etc. Using the link-element you could then set a link to this item (by the way: you can now also link to certain labels in other lessons!). Using the labelRef attribute you are now able to reference another element which "connects" the two elements. You will still have to define in your project how the transformation should handle this "connection" (link? Create a separate box or table?). The default-transformation does not use this information at the moment but this might change in future releases. This new attribute is also available in the metadata (within the copyrightStatement element). So you can e.g. add a specific copyright statement for a certain image or movie used within your lesson. You will find a list of (nearly) all changes below. Please note that we are announcing this release 5.1 although you will find the release 5.11 on Sourceforge. We did publish a 5.1 release on Sourceforge about a month ago but never announced it. The SCORM implementation was not satisfying enough so we waited with our announcement until we had the release 5.11. Sorry for the confusion :-) You can find the download link for the new stable release and much more on the eLML website: http://www.elml.org For a full list of new features and bugfixes check: https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=928413 Have fun with the new release and thanks to the following people for building this new release: Susanne Bleisch, Alberto Sanz, Sandra Roth, Thomas Comiotto, Andreas Wittke & Oncampus Bye Joël Fisler -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... It does look like many of you downloaded the Beta 3 because else I would have got an email :-) Together with the introduction of the Firefox Autoupdated feature I misplaced some files which resulted in Firedocs not being able to open a lesson at all. So Beat 3 is totally useless... Now with Beta 4 it should work again... Good luck and please test it!!! Dear eLML-Users, So I managed to release the Beta 3 of our Firedocs eLML Editor just in time before the Online Educa conference in Berlin (that I will be attending). Please go to www.elml.org --> tools --> Firedocs eLML Editor to get the latest release 1.2b03 What has changed? A lot of bugfixes, most of the bugs you submitted were fixed. Then we updated the RelaxNG schema etc. I wont go into details, you can find them in the Sourceforge bugtracker. One feature is new though: The editor will check for updates automatically from now on and automatically update itself (if you allow it) as you may already know it from other Firefox Add-ons. Have fun! Dear eLML-Users, I just committed two changes in the developer release, a major and minor change. The minor change is that the column element now also supports the visible attribute. The major change is within the online- version: I did split the huge elml.xsl file into a file common.xsl and the remaining elml.xsl. Why that? The reason is that I want the eLML Firedocs Editor and the eLML core transformation to be identical. So starting with eLML Firedocs Beta 3 (released in a few days) both the core and the editor will use the same common.xsl file to transform or display elements like list, table, column, paragraph etc. This will eliminate editor problems we had in beta 1 and 2 where certain elements would look differently within the editor than using the default transformation files. Please update your developer release and test if everything still works for you. I did test it and had no problems but this is OSX only... And submit a bug at sourceforge if you find problems or bugs. Thanks a lot Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users, There are still some open issues to be discussed on Sourceforge. Please take your time and have a look at the following items (and comment them): - RSS-Feed for eLML: I implemented an RSS-support for eLML for www.olat.org. Is there general interest for this? Should we implement this into the eLML core? Or do we not need RSS in eLearing lessons? Please comment here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&atid=695593&aid=1990675&group_id=123157 - Hide terms in glossary: The RWI wanted to exclude certain terms from the glossary. Is this not needed anymore? Anyone else would need this feature? Discuss here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&atid=695593&aid=1801137&group_id=123157 - Integrate web analytics/statistics within eLML lessons? Do you want to integrate Google Analytics or PiWi into your lessons? https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&atid=695593&aid=1990668&group_id=123157 - Copyright attribute for multimedia elements: Is it necessary to define for a multimedia element what kind of copyright or licences applies to this image or movie? https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/index.php?func=detail&aid=2219046&group_id=123157&atid=695593 Feel free to also have a look at the other feature requests: https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?atid=695593&group_id=123157&func=browse Please post your comments within the next seven days, thank you. Dear eLML-Users, As some of you might know we have "big" new partner using eLML: OnCampus (www.oncampus.de). The are migrating to eLML and will present this migration from their old tool also at the Online Educa conference in Berlin on Friday 5th at 4:30 pm: http://www.online-educa.com/programme_detail.php?id=f9 Now having a new partner on board means new feature requests. The did a great job in migrating their old structure into the eLML structure but some things still remain to be added or changed in eLML. Therefore some discussions are running about changes within the XMLSchema of eLML and the XSLT default files. Please check them out and comment if you want. Here are some changes we already approved and realized: 1. multimedia element now has a title attribute (like table, paragraph, list etc.). In the HTML version this title is only generated if the multimedia element is used as block element and not as an inline element! https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=695593&aid=2107468&group_id=123157 2. multimedia element now has a type called "mp3". This new type had an impact on the existing type="mpeg" which has been used for video and audio in the past. New is that type="mpeg" is only for video/mpeg and type="mp3" is for audio/mpeg, so please change your lessons accordingly. I did not find anyone using type="mpeg" in the projects stored on our UZH-eLML-Repository server but you might check anyway. The discussion is still going on because there seems to be a problem with the lightwindow script and there are ideas of implementing a Flash player for the multimedia element. Check this tracker and add your comment: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2107436&group_id=123157&atid=695593 3. All elements that offer the bibIDRef attribute to reference to a bibliographic item do now have a second pageNr attribute. This allows to not only reference eg. a table, image or list to a bibliographic source but also to add which page eg. you took the image from. This has already been implemented. More details here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2107549&group_id=123157&atid=695593 4. Using box in box or more general block- vs. inline-elements: Should it be possible to use a box within a box? Or more general: Should eLML be more strict with the separation between elements that can contain block elements and elements that can contain inline elements (or mixed)? Discuss here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2112030&group_id=123157&atid=695593 And there is some more stuff still open in the feature request tracker. Go and have a look here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=123157&atid=695593 Bye Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users, I am working hard on eLML 5 release and there are some minor changes that might affect you: A first change was made by Susanne in the XML Schema. If you want you can ignore it because your lessons will still be valid. She did loosen the definition of the @target attribute of the link element. Up to now you could only choose between target=_blank and target=_top which doesnt make sense. Now you can put any kind of text in this attribute field. If you still prefer to have a validation you can read Susannes text below on how to do that modifying your projects validate.xsd A second change concerns people using YAML. The change was done by Thomas Linowsky and myself. As you know he wrote the Template Builder application that generates layout templates. Up to now you had to download YAML and put the "yaml" folder within your templates folder (eg. "plain" or "gitta" or "main" or however you called your template). It was on the same level as the elml.css and the online.xsl file. Now we moved it one step up and did put it directly within the "_templates" folder. This is where eLML and the Template Builder expects the YAML folder. Why that change? Because some projects have 10 layout templates and more and if you use YAML you would have had 10 copies of that folder and this doesnt make sense. Especially if you know that this folder contains hundreds of CSS files etc. You can always ask me if something concerning one of these changes is not clear: el...@id... Dear eLML-Users, As most of you know we had two students working for Google Summer of Code: - Thomas Linowsky created an eLML Template Generator - Alberto Sanz created a transformation file for the DocBook format Both projects were successfully finished last week and will be integrated into the eLML project during the next weeks. Both students will present their work at our public GSoC closing event next week on Thursday, September 4th 2008 at 4pm (Swiss time) at the University of Zurich-Irchel. We plan to live stream and/or record the presentations for those who cannot attend. Only the two presentations from India will be English, the other presentations will be in German (sorry). After the presentations we will celebrate the successful end of GSoC with a barbecue in our beautiful Irchel park (hopefully with good weather). You can download a PDF with all the details on our website at: http://www.elml.ch/website/en/download/gsoc2008_final_event.pdf Hope to se you next week Bye Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich - Informatikdienste (ID) Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Hi everybody
With the default templates in eLML it's not possible to have videos
scaling to the browser width. When you have a large video and a small
browser window (e.g. when beaming in a classroom) you might encounter
scrollbars and your video is not visible entirely.
Thus, we applied the following changes to make it work (only for
quicktime movies):
1) In the eLML XSLT: Add the scale="aspect" parameter to both the
object and the embed tag.
<xsl:template name="elml:Quicktime">
<xsl:param name="pathMultimedia"/>

<xsl:call-template name="elml:Label"/>
<xsl:call-template name="elml:MultimediaAttributes"/>
<xsl:attribute name="data">
<xsl:value-of select="$pathMultimedia"/>
</xsl:attribute>

<xsl:attribute name="value">
<xsl:value-of select="$pathMultimedia"/>
</xsl:attribute>

<xsl:call-template name="elml:Label"/>
<xsl:attribute name="src">
<xsl:value-of select="$pathMultimedia"/>
</xsl:attribute>
<xsl:call-template name="elml:MultimediaAttributes"/>

</xsl:template>
2) in the CSS, add the following rule:
.multimedia_paragraph_center object, .multimedia_paragraph_center
embed{width: 100%}
To add a scaling movie you must then use the following line in your
content:
<multimedia type="quicktime" units="pixels" height="600" width="800"
align="center" src="../multimedia/mymovie.mov">Mymovie</multimedia>
Note that it is mandatory that you specify a width and height in
pixel. % is invalid and won't work at all.
The browser is now doing the following:
- It creates a 800x600 pixel box
- Within the box the movie is displayed centered
- The movie width is not larger than your browser window. When you
make the browser window smaller, the movie scales to this size.
- When you make the browser window larger than the 800x600 box, the
movie stops scaling at 800x600px
Note that the 800x600 must not be the size of the movie not must it
have the same aspect ratio as the movie. The only thing it does is
defining the maximal space the movie can take. Unfortunately the
height is always used, which means that when you have a very small
browser window you will have a white space above and below the movie
(e.g. displayed movie height is 400, you will have 100px above and
100px below the movie to match the defined 600px height.
Joël, do you think adding the scale="aspect" and the CSS rule to the
default xslt/css would make sense?
Of course you can also add the css rule to the left and right aligned
movie, but since the scaled movie will always be centered and the 100%
rule is needed to make the scaling work, I thought it would make sense
to have it only there.
BTW, to achieve the same effect on an image, just define a 100% width
without a height:
<multimedia type="jpeg" align="center" units="percent" width="100"
src="../image/myscreenshot.jpg"></multimedia>
This makes sense only for large images, e.g. for screenshots.
Cheers
Florian

Dear eLML-Newsletter subscribers, So it has been exactly half a year since our last newsletter which does not mean that nothing is happening at the eLML project, just our communication is a bit slow :-) eLML wins CATCON Gold Award in Beijing: ----------------------------------------------------------- Today eLML won the CATCON Gold Award in Beijing at the ISPRS Conference! We would like the CATCON organizers for this prize! You will find more information about this here within the next days: http://www.isprs2008-beijing.org http://www.igg.tu-berlin.de/1306 http://gallery.mac.com/fisler#100042 (A short 3 min. Movie) eLML is a Medida Prix Finalist: ------------------------------------------ eLML also is one of the finalists for the Medida Prix eLearning Award awarded at the GMW Conference in Austria on September 18th. Wish us luck and "drückt uns die Daumen" as we say in German! http://www.medidaprix.org/ Google Summer of Code: ------------------------------------ You might have heard that eLML is participating at this years Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and has been nominated as a mentoring organization. Currently two students are working on two different projects. Alberto Sanz is creating a transformation file to transform eLML lessons into the DocBook format. He is also (not part of GSoC) the person creating the Open Document Format (ODF) converter and we plan to release both sometimes in September 2008. GSoC: Template Builder Beta released: ------------------------------------------------------ The second project is Thomas Linowskys Template Generator. With his tool you can easily create eLML templates using a standard webbrowser. No XSLT-knowledge needed anymore! Please visit www.elml.ch and read the latest news entry on how to download and use the template generator. Please note that this is a beta release and that Thomas would appreciate your feedback if you downloaded and used his tool! Thanks a lot! The famous eLML editor...: ------------------------------------ So in the last newsletter we promised to release it at the OLAT conference in March 2008. The the release of the editor was postponed to July 2008. Then Firefox 3 came out and - since the editor is a Firefox plugin - many new problems arised. Another month of work plus holidays, missing documentation etc. You get the picture. But I can offer you (the newsletter subscribers) exclusively a preview version. Point your browser at: http://www.elml.ch/firedocs-elml.xpi to download the plugin. Then open Firefox and choose "Open" in the File menu. The Plugin will be installed. After a restart you will see a new menu to the right of the Google Search field. Choose "Open..." to open an existing eLML lesson and test the editor. You can send comments to el...@id... but you will have to wait for the first official (beta) release in September for documentation etc. Have fun! eLML stable version 5: ------------------------------- The current stable version 4 of eLML is outdated. We suggest that you use the "developer version" instead. We plan to have a new eLML 5 release this automn. The developer release already contains a lot of new stuff like better support for the editor, the template generator and for YAML, new tooltip and lightwindow script, optimized HTML-page for Google and other search engines (including the automatic generation of a sitemap.xml), ODF and DocBook generator and much more. So eLML is alive and running! But with all the stuff we do we simply lack the time to maintain and update the website regularly. Sorry about that. We do our best :-) Greetings from Beijing Joël -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joël Fisler Universität Zürich - Informatikdienste (ID) Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) Winterthurerstrasse 190 (Y12 F64) CH-8057 Zürich Phone: +41 44 63 55252 or "joelfisler" (Skype) Mail: joe...@id... Dear eLML-Users, We found a bug of the lightwindow script that we had to fix: In our upcoming OLAT 6 release (www.olat.org) planned at the University of Zurich on July 14th, the whole layout is based on YAML and content package (created e.g. with eLML) are integrated into OLAT 6 using iFrames. Now lightwindow does not know anything about iFrames and therefore the script did not work. Thankfully Florian Gnägi (Frentix) fixed this bug and I updated the eLML core and website today to reflect the changes. I took this opportunity to better integrate lightwindow into eLML. New is: - Configure if you want to use lightwindow or not in your config.xml file. This means that you can also disable lightwindow now. - The paths to the JavaScripts are now integrated into the HEAD tag as they should - Now need to adapt the paths to the images within the lightwindow JavaScript files. But for you this means 5 minutes of work. So here's what existing lightwindow users should do: 1. Do a "cvs update" of the core. 2. Delete your _templates/YOURTEMPLATE/lightwindow folder! 3. If you have an online.xsl file and there within the elml:LayoutBody template three references to the lightwindow script, then please delete it. The references to be deleted are probably like this: 4. Read the following short manual and do exactly as written: http://elml.ch/website/en/html/output_your_template.html#your_template_lightwindow.html Dont forget to change the path within your elml.css file! Sorry for the inconvenience but in the end this makes your life easier and it is fully compliant with the new OLAT 6! Hi, I sent you last week an email about eLML and the support for Google Analytics. Rene Schegg sent me a mail with the hint that there is an open source solution for this called Piwik (see below, second text). Furthermore some of you sent me answers directly with there comments. Now since eLML is an open source project and I would like to have everyones opinion public I create a new feature request. Check the second text below for more details and for the link where you can add your comment. Now for the OLAT website (www.olat.org) I create an RSS feed in eLML. Since I already implemented the technology to create both RSS and Atom XML files I was wondering if we should integrate that into the core. Please read my comment below and post your comments on Sourceforge using the link after the text. Please do not reply to my personal address, thanks. Dear eLML-Users, Last week I did some improvements within the eLML core that will help you rank better in Google. I mainly added two things: 1. eLML now generates a sitemap.xml file 2. META-tags are a lot better and more descriptive I started working with Google Webmaster tools (http://www.google.com/intl/de/webmasters/ ) and learned some new stuff. So I thought why not implement it into the eLML core :-) Now I dont want to make publicity for Google but we cannot neglect the tips listed there if we want our HTML pages to be found. You will also find more information about sitemaps and how the work under the above link. Please note that the sitemap.xml file is generated on root level as is the manifest.xml file. This is because its basically where it belongs on your webserver :-) I also integrated Google Analytics (http://www.google.com/analytics/) into both olat.org and elml.ch using eLML but this is not (yet?) a general feature of eLML. I did include this adapting my online.xsl file. I could also implement this directly into the core but: a) I dont know if its of general interest b) its a Google-specific feature so I dont know if it should really be part of the core (the above two features are not Google-specific but general improvements for ALL search engines) Feel free to contact me if you have further questions about these minor improvements. Dear eLML-Users, I updated Walter Zorns Tooltip Script from version 4 to version 5. We had some problems with the older version and hopefully they are gone now :-) You can find more information about the tooltip script here: http://walterzorn.de/tooltip/tooltip.htm What do you have to do to update the script? 1. CVS-Update the "core" 2. Re-transform your lesson 3. Check if everything works correctly Did you use special configurations (template elml:LayoutTooltipScriptConfig) for the script? No problem, the variable names are the same, should work. Version 5 has some more variables, you can add them if you like or ignore them (then the default value is taken) Do you have your own template for the <term> or <annotation> element? The onmouseover attribute remains the same but now there is a onmouseout event. Add the following code to your link attribute: onmouseout="UnTip()" You can see the new script in action if you look at www.olat.org on the first page. Please let me know if you have problems with the new tooltip script. Dear eLML-Users, A very short minutes of last weeks eLML Meeting. Thanks for all the =20 people who attended the meeting: Olaf Schnabel (ETH), S=E4mi Wiesmann (ETH) Roland Streule (PTO Projekt), = =20 Thomas Comiotto (MELS, Sandra Roth (MELS), Thomas Grossmann (GIUZ), =20 Susanne Bleisch (FHNW), Michael Ziege (MELS), Res Zangger (ESO =20 Projekt), Jo=EBl Fisler (MELS), Petra Kauer-Ott (GIUZ), Alberto Sanz =20 (MELS), Caspar N=F6tzli (ELC), Lukas St=E4hli (RWI), Bernhard Fuchs =20 (KLPHS), Patrick Kammerer (ESO Projekt) 1. Alberto Sanz made a short demo of his ODF-Transformation. Some of =20 the meeting participants would be interested in testing and using it. =20= The majority argued that a real benefit would be a "2-way-=20 communication" meaning that you could not only transform eLML to ODF =20 but also transform the edited ODF document back to eLML. This would =20 mean to continue developing the Open Office Editor Andre Locher =20 started last year. Unfortunately there are no financial resources at =20 the moment for that but we will see. Another concern is that the ODF =20 document cannot be directly imported into Word 2007. You need a =20 converter and this converter is not always working properly. Hopefully =20= this will be fixed during the next months. Planned release date is March 2008. 2. Thomas Comiotto presented the beta version of his XML editor. The =20 editor is programmed as a firefox plugin and it can be easily =20 installed with a double-click. It works both integrated into Lenya/=20 UniCMS or as a standalone Editor. There are some extensions for eLML =20 but eg. the GUI for bibliography or glossary is not finished yet. =20 Multimedia assets are only supported in the UniCMS version at the =20 moment but will soon be working in both version. There is a WYSIWYG =20 view and an outline view, other views could be implemented (eg. by the =20= projects) by adapting an XSLT file. The modalities for becoming a =20 betatester were discussed and some of you already contacted Thomas and =20= received a beta-version. There seems to be a problem in Windows XP on =20= some machines but this should be solved soon. Release of the Lenya/=20 UniCMS editor will be on March 7th 2008. Release of the standalone =20 eLML editor should also be around this time (we would like to present =20= it at the OLAT conference in late March). After the demo there was a discussion about the strategy, the future =20 of this tool and the importance of eLML with the editor for the =20 University of Zurich. Unfortunately there is not much I can say at the =20= moment about this because the future employment of Thomas Comiotto =20 after July 2008 is not within my competences. But I am very positive =20 that we will find a reasonable solution. I'll keep you updated. 3. The last points (open requests and varia) were skipped due to the =20 long demo and discussion. Please go to = http://sourceforge.net/projects/elml/=20 and post your comments to the open requests there. I will try to =20 "clean up" or close open requests in the first two January weeks.
