Hi all, You are receiving this message either because you are subscribed to the EClass users mailing list, or because you are or have been actively involved with the project. Over the past couple months, I've been doing a lot of work on EClass to make cross-platform development quicker and easier, to fix some annoying bugs, and to make it easier and faster for me to produce test releases. I've finally gotten everything automated, and now I can produce releases on demand for both Windows and Mac using a simple script. This also means a new method for producing test releases. From now on, test versions will be marked with the date they were produced, to make it easy to tell if you have a test or a release version, and whether or not you have the latest version. I will also have an email sent out to the eclass-users list each time the testing version is updated. The latest releases made using this new system can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php? group_id=67634&package_id=66945 So, what is in our current testing version? - We've switched to Unicode, which means EClass can read and write data in pretty much any language. This also addresses the filename problems we've had with older versions, where the filenames were in a character set other than what EClass expected. Unfortunately, Unicode is poorly supported on Win 98 and below, so if you need a version of EClass for those OSes please let me know. (It can be made to work, it's just extra effort.) - Media files are automatically moved underneath the pub directory. This fixes the Windows issues with media files not playing in the preview window, and also removes the need to use a "server program" to allow the media files to play via CD. - Contact manager, so you can keep track of people you add for credits, etc. You can also import from, or export to, VCards, which are used by almost every address book program out there. - Expanded metadata, so you can store various properties about your page. - After BJ and I did some experimenting with various ways of supporting search functions, we switched to Lucene for indexing. Lucene is about as scalable as Greenstone (and in fact, Greenstone 3 will support it), but offers true cross-platform compatibility (no need to rebuild indexes for different processors), it lets you define metadata fields for searching, and most importantly, you can add/ remove/update individual files in the index - you do not have to reindex the entire collection on each change. EClass already takes advantage of this capability to only (re-)index modified files. I still need to work on the CD/web front ends, though. - Fairly extensive under-the-hood improvements to make creating/ designing new interfaces easier (dialog layout is mostly automated based on the rules specified in each platform's "interface guidelines"), write clean and easy to read code, and avoid duplicating code. Also, as a result, most dialogs are resizable. The end result is that EClass should require less coding to do things, and that means less code to test and debug. And here's what I'm planning to add in the near future: - A content analyzer - it will go over your content when requested (or before CD/web publishing), checking to see if you have different types of media for different types of learning styles, and making suggestions based on the results. It will also determine what plugins the user will need to view the EClass, if any (and optionally spit out a page with links to the players), warn about excessively large media files, and check for potentially broken links. - Learning style profiler: A specialized quiz module that helps learners determine their learning style. - EClass.Library, a program focused on indexing directories of content and make them browseable and searchable via web (Win and Linux servers) and CD for Windows and Mac platforms, with basic Linux support as well. Web interface templates will be HTML-based so they're easy to edit in Dreamweaver, etc. I'd like to thank everyone for their support on the project! It is my hope that the project can grow into new areas and become even more useful for creating all sorts of instructional materials. I also hope to work on the web site and promotional aspects so that the community will grow and expand, and so will EClass. :-) Thanks, Kevin |

Hi all, Unless there is a major objection from the community, from the next release of EClass.Builder, the built-in HTML Editor will be disabled. This is a result of a large number of new bugs appearing when I upgraded to a recent version of Mozilla. These bugs effectively break the HTML editing functions. I have spent the last week and a half trying to work out issues with the upgrade, but the editing issues remain and I'm afraid I do not want to continue spending more and more time on this. At the same time, I cannot continue to let our Mozilla installation lag far behind as it will contain many security fixes as well as improved page rendering (on the browser side, at least). So from now on, when you double-click on an HTML page to edit it, it will open the editor you've specified in your HTML editor preferences. Now that specifying an HTML editor is more important, I'm considering working on a startup wizard for new users which will walk them through the process of specifying programs, try and auto- detect existing ones, etc. Some good news is that there is now a free program called Nvu, based off the old Mozilla Composer program, nearing a 1.0 release. It runs on Windows, Linux and Mac. You can download it from: http://www.nvu.com In any case, I hope to have a public 2.5.5 release in the near future, i.e. the next couple weeks. Hi Barbara, If you're using 2.0 without problems, and it does what you need it to, then I'd say stick with it. 2.5 is still being actively developed (though I hope to start winding down soon) so you're more likely to come across a bug in it. Importing xls files are relatively easy.=20
Method 1:
Click on the "page" menu and select "import file...". Fill in the dialog =
boxes and in the "page content" box click on the open folder icon to =
browse to the xls file.
Having explained method 1, I would recommend against using the import =
file function for XLS files. If your end-users do not have the excel =
viewer, a different browser other than IE, or a different OS, they may =
have problems viewing the XLS file.
Method 2:
In Excel, you can convert the xls to an html page and use this in a =
EClass page. This method will also allow the table to be searchable by =
Greenstone or swish-e.

By the way, I think I have over a hundred pages, and I know I could =
edit the pub/*.htm files but that would take some time. I was hoping =
that we could figure something out, cuz I have plenty of time. And, I am =
basically using the html editor as text documents. I mean I'm not =
really writing any html code, I basically use the editor like word.
I have question though. Is it possible to import excel files rather =
than use than inserting table, because you can do so much more with =
excel than with those tables. just a thought.

I had a hard time re-creating it, because I misunderstood what you =
were saying. When you say the link "disappeared", you didn't mean the =
hyperlinked text, but the link no longer worked. In other words, when =
you click on the link, it shows you "Page can not be displayed". Is =
this what is happening?
This was caused by moving a page up. Unfortunately, at this time I =
do not have a solution other than editing the pub/*.htm files, which =
depending on the total number of files could be a tedious task. This =
could be a problem, if you publish or preview again.
I will be in touch with Kevin, the developer, and we will hopefully =
get a better solution to you.

theme. Go the "File" menu, and click on "Refresh Theme".

able to recover them. I have no idea what I did the make that happen =

wondering if there was a way I could view my class on another computer =
through a business network or transfer it by jumpdrive. I already tried =
sharing eclass builder and the files under eclass projects, but i was =
unable to view the project nor open eclass on other computer. It might =
just be the computers that we have here, although I tried installing the =
program on the test computer also. I wondering if you had any ideas on =
these two subjects. By the way, I have not published my class to the =
internet or copied it to a cd yet.

hmmm, I haven't seen that yet. This definitely sounds like the same =
issue. Perhaps after you moved pages, and then added pages, this caused =
the "disappearance" al together.

That is what origanally happened, but I was able to fix that problem =
and then like I said the hyperlinked text disappeared. Its gone. It no =

More than likely you did not edit the theme, it takes a little bit of =
scripting to edit the themes. One suggestion is to refresh the theme. =
Go the "File" menu, and click on "Refresh Theme".
Any chance you remember what you were doing before the "navigation" =
links disappeared? Remove a page? Move a page up/down? Import?

Hi BJ, Gak! Wow, thanks for catching this. The problem is that Python module names cannot start with a number, even if your theme name can. (and each theme creates its own Python file, which will allow for customized macros, etc.) For the moment, try deleting the theme and re-creating it using a name like "five_decades". After TFA, I'm going on a major bug-hunt and also adding a few of the features we've talked about over the past month or so, and will take care of this along with the other things. Hi Kevino,
I found a new bug...
I tried creating new themes by copying an old one (frames), it creates the
theme, but once you close the theme manager. It doesn't work. If you open
the theme manager, the new theme is gone. However, it is still there in the
C:\Program Files\EClass.Builder 2.5.4.17\themes.
Since then, I have closed EClass (editor.exe) and tried to re-open it, no
luck. Eclass fails to start.
I re-installed, and the same problem occurs:

DT, Ok, I think I understand the problem. The links were "absolute" versus "relative". Yes, there were many problems with the older versions, but I think Kevin has done an amazing job getting it all worked out in 2.5.4.17. Hi all, I am pleased to announce that we are ready to release EClass.Builder 2.5.4 FINAL (aka 2.5.4.17). Thanks particularly to BJ who really gave the tool a workout. As a result, I think this this release looks quite solid to me. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/eclass-builder-2.5.4.17.exe So now it's time to start looking at EClass.Builder 2.5.5, which may be the last release in the 2.5 series. I am hoping to be able to have everything done for August 6th, so that hopefully this release can make it to TFA this year. Here is what I have planned for this release: - OpenOffice.org file conversion capability restored - Mac and Linux versions updated (updating will be automated so in the future I can quickly produce a Mac or Linux binary with just a couple commands) - Audio/Video/Flash embedding for the HTML editor - Various HTML editor tweaks - SWISH-E will support Publish to Web if the web site has a CGI-BIN directory and runs a Windows or Red Hat Linux server. (Can't do this automatically with Greenstone...) - More metadata support, including Categories and Organization (I will use the IMS standard names, however.) - Documancer (http://documancer.sf.net) support, which provides a more sophisticated interface for EClasses, including bookmarks and highlighted search results If I get ahead of the game, I also plan on the following: - Batch import of files and batch setting of metadata properties (i.e. setting category for a group of documents) - Media manager (browse and preview files in your EClass - this will also be used when inserting files into a page) - "Theme Options" let you point and click define properties of the theme, including things like allowing you to create your own navigation bar or choose your own page banner, color scheme, etc. - Complete "Table" support in the HTML editor Please let me know your thoughts, especially any features you may want to see included for the next release!
