Hi Kevin, The new Eclass looks good, a few comments: While publishing, I selected to rename my files to fit "the under 31 = characters" (re: error message), however it still asks me every I = publish if I want to do this. A little annoying. Is it possible to make = it automatic after the first time? I used Swish-e to index the e-class but it still says Greenstone when = indexing. The search does not run when clicking on Frame.html or index.html, you = need to run httpserver.exe, some people may not know it. (it took me = several minutes.) I get the following error when I submit on the search page: The Flash plugin works great The animation appears to have been = re-sized, is there a default size?=20 When you publish a page with a quiz, on the initial quiz page the = graphic on the left is missing. "Graphics/Quiz/blank.gif". Will send more comments as I work with it. Hi all, Just wanted to let you know I have *finally* posted a new EClass beta. In addition to some bug fixes for some problems people have been encountering, it has the following new features: - DOC, RTF support for text formats (if OOo 1.1 beta 1 is installed) - Spanish support - New Quiz plugin - create auto-grading quizzes, and provide feedback on correct and incorrect answers (select Page->Add New->Quiz from the main menu) - Flash support - Add Flash videos and presentations into your EClass pages - Improved Search support - Greenstone is no longer required for full-text indexing (to turn on searching support, select File->Project Settings, select the Search tab, and check the "Enable search support" box. =) - EClass.Server - resolves issues with Windows Media files and allows authors to add CGI scripts to EClasses - More on the way... =) Here's the link: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/windows-beta.html Please read the notes, try it out, and let me know what you think! Thanks, Kevin |

Hi all, I've heard from Bill that there have been some problems uploading EClasses to particular servers (Linux-based?) and I'm writing to find out some more information on this problem. Could anyone who has experienced these problems please write back and let me know: 1. What platform(s) you've experienced the problems on. 2. A web link for an EClass that exhibits these problems. 3. Information on the web host being used. Also, please send me the errlog.txt file from your EClass.Builder program directory, so that I can see any warning/error messages sent out by the software. Please also note that the EClass email help line is available 24x7 and phone support is also available during work hours. ;-) I would really like to find out what is going wrong so that I can get the issue fixed. Thanks for your help! Kevin |

Hi all, With Windows XP and Mac OS X, and even newer versions of Linux, program icons have gotten larger and more colorful, making them both more descriptive and less intimidating to new users. OS X lets the user scale icons up to 128x128 pixels, so our current icon would be a big, blocky blur by then. ;-) I think EClass would benefit from a new look, and to that end I would like you to take a look at and comment on some new icons that I would like to use for the EClass programs. Here is a link to the new program icons and splash screen I would like to use: http://www.eclass.net/newlook I already received permission from the designer of these icons to use them in EClass. Also, I am also going to ask Bill if we can purchase some XP/OS X like toolbar icons. I also plan on adding these into menus as well, as many programs do these days. The icons in question can be found here: http://www.glyfx.com/products.html The primary sets I would be using icons from would be the Core Application set, the Word Processing set, and the Multimedia Set. Please look at them and see if you think they would be fitting for EClass. Note also that they are smaller and a little less detailed than what the final versions will be - they do this so that people won't simply copy the preview icons and paste them into their program. I personally think the icons are very colorful and fit well within the new design standards of XP/OS X. Please let me know if you approve of the new icons, and if not, please let me know what you think should be changed/fixed about them. Thanks! Kevin |

Hi BJ, Unfortunately, there isn't a way to combine all the EClass pages in the=20= way that you mention. Hi BJ (and all), I wasn't aware of the startup error, but there have been problems with=20= saving pages. There are several known bugs in this version, which=20 Parquesoft will be fixing over the next month or so. Also, since they=20 worked from EClass.Builder 2.0 beta 3, there are also some bugs from=20 older versions of EClass present that will be fixed when it is merged=20 into the main codebase. This version is basically a prototype to get=20 your thoughts on the interface changes and new features. Also, could you re-send the startup error? The graphic didn't come=20 through. Hi Kevin, I've installed the Spanish version from a CD that Maria has here. The installation went fine. However, when I tried to create a new course, without specifying the location for courses on the HD the Eclass gives an error message, the problem is that the message is in English!! :) The same thing has also happened when I was on the windows Editor de pagina EClass and tried to save. I got an error message saying "The was an error publishing the Eclass page to HTML. Please check...". I believe this is also a message of Eclass that is in English as well. Hope this helps. Hi BJ (and all), Sorry about that, my mistake. I took out a few source files which I had thought were unnecessary, but turns out they are still needed in the binary. I posted an updated version at the same URL: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/eclass_parquesoft.zip As before, just double-click on "editor.exe" to begin! Hi Kevino, Regarding the Parquesoft version of EClass: I extracted the file eclass_parquesoft.zip and ran the editor.exe file, I got the opening screen, selected English and clicked "Ok". Nothing happened. Am I suppose to extract the file to a specific location? I tried this on Windows XP Pro and Win98, same result. Hi all, Two versions, you say? Yes, there are two versions. Let me explain a bit more, and then I'll give the links. In October, Bill contracted a company in Columbia named Parquesoft (http://www.parquesoft.com) to develop a Spanish version of EClass, and also to make any changes/improvements they saw necessary. They released a draft to us last week, and I would like to get your comments on some of the new features. This is not an "official" release of EClass; it is for testing and review purposes only. Some of the things they have done are: 1. Of course, added a translation system into EClass with Spanish translations 2. Added an "Authors/Instructors" list. (There is a bug and it is not saving data currently, but please review the interface.) 3. Changed the EClass Page editor to be more graphical and use a 'tab-based' format. It is important to note that this demo is based upon EClass.Builder 2.0beta 3, and does not properly open EClass Pages built with other versions of EClass (they made some changes to the format), so please test it by creating a new course. You can download the prototype at: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/eclass_parquesoft.zip (double-click on "editor.exe" to start. In the meantime, I have been at work on making some improvements to EClass.Builder 2.0. I have posted an "alpha" of the next version, 2.1, for download. The URL is: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/EClass-Builder2.1a1.exe (for Mac users: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/EClassBuilder21a1.dmg) What's changed? - New Quiz page format. To create a quiz, select "Page->Add New->Quiz" from the menu bar, or right-click and select "Add New->Quiz". Currently it only works with multiple choice, and auto-grades, but support for more formats and submitting results to the Instructor are on the drawing board. - EClass now warns about files which have more than 31 characters in the file name, and can automatically rename them. Files with more than 31 characters were being renamed on OS 9, thus causing some of the links to break. - Fixed a problem with the credit handling that caused credit boxes containing quotation marks to partially appear on the page, instead of a new window. - Should fix problems with the "edit" button not working with files over a network on Windows - On Mac: Now has the standard Mac install procedure - none! Just drag the EClass.Builder file into your /Applications folder to install! (and into the trash to uninstall!) Thanks, Kevin |

Hi BJ, I tried and am experiencing the same problem. It is not unique to=20 EClass; this happens in IE as well. Looked it up on the discussion=20 forums and according to Microsoft, this is a "feature" and not a "bug".=20= (Aren't they all? =3D) In order to make the media player "more secure",=20= they have disallowed the use of ".." in the filename path. In other=20 words, no relative links, at least not ones that could possibly go=20 outside the "root" of the web site. I fail to see the logic in this,=20 but the more immediate problem is that I'm not sure what to do about=20 it. Using absolute URLs is really out of the question, but the only=20 other 'fix' I see at this point is totally re-doing the file structure=20= of EClass by putting all media files within the 'pub' folder, which is=20= confusing and kinda defeats the point of EClass. The other=20 possibilities I see are: 1. We could only support MPEG or RealMedia/QuickTime and include an=20 open source/freeware player (and hopefully converter). 2. No longer directly embed video into EClass (maybe use a screenshot=20 and a "Play" button that links to the video instead?), something I've=20 been thinking about anyways. However, this may still cause a relative=20 link problem with WMP. I'll scout out what the current state of Java MPEG (1/2/4) players is=20 and see where Real is at with their open source efforts. In the=20 meantime, any thoughts or suggestions on this would be appreciated! Hi Richard, The author of Joust gives explicit permission for others to alter and redistribute the software so long as the copyright notice in the source code remains, so we can continue to revise and debug the software even though the original author has discontinued development. So far, we have found that the software performs well in many different environments (IE and Netscape on Win, Mac and Linux) and hasn't generated many support requests, so I think it is feasible for us to support and revise the software ourselves for use in EClass. I hope this answers your question! Kevin -----Original Message----- From: ecl...@li... [mailto:ecl...@li...] On Behalf Of Richard Mohun Sent: Thursday, January 23, 2003 8:54 AM To: ecl...@li... Hi all, Welcome to the new EClass users mailing list! This list is for support issues, discussion of new features/ideas, and announcements of new beta and testing releases. You are on this list because in one way or another you help with the testing and development of EClass. If you do not want to be on this list, please let me know and I will remove you from the list. I have several announcements to cover, so please bear with me on the long message! 1. EClass.Builder 2.0 FINAL: EClass.Builder 2.0 is ready, but I would like to undergo some final tests before making it public. I have uploaded EClass.Builder 2.0 final to the EClass.Net web site, and you can download it (for Windows) at: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/EClassBuilder20.exe In two weeks (Jan 17) this will become the final release and made public on the EClass web site, so if you experience any major problems please be sure to let me know before that time. For the final release there will be Linux and Mac binaries as well. I am also working on an evaluation questionnaire (with Phuong's help!) which should be ready for the final release as well. I will post a link to it on this list once it is available, and I would ask that whenever EClass is distributed at a training seminar or class that we give out this questionnaire to evaluate it's success. 2. EClass project site: There is now an EClass project site available where you can view mailing list archives, track support issues, and even see what new features I am working on (click on Tasks)! It is available at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/eclass/ This will be a central repository for info on the development of the EClass software. Please post bug reports to this site (I will get them via email) as it will allow you to see where I am at in fixing it. 3. EClass.Builder 2.1: EClass.Builder 2.1 is due around mid-February or early March so I thought I would also mention quickly some of the things I am working on for this: - Java search support: This will be an alternative to Greenstone and will "just work". It requires no configuration or extra tools to be installed. It also works cross-platform. Also, it works both with indexed and non-indexed EClasses, so for EClasses that need a fast searching solution, an indexing option will be available. (For more info on this tool, please see: http://housespider.sourceforge.net/) - Quiz plugin: I am working on a plugin for developing Quizzes within EClass. Currently, there is only support for simple true/false or multiple choice, and the quiz gives feedback only to the learner, but I plan to add more reporting and quiz options to the system in the future. - Presentation plugin: I am also developing a plugin that will add a page formatted similarly to the CDMHA conference format. (pic on left, flash presentation w/audio on right, PPT for download on bottom) There are a couple more features in development, but they are probably going to be integrated into EClass.Builder 2.5, due out this summer. Please let me know what you think, and please take a moment out to take the EClass.Builder 2.0 final for a test drive and see how it performs! Thanks for all your help in moving the EClass project forward! Kevin |
