Yes, you'd need to edit the plugins/quiz.py file to make it use a different template (do a search for "themes" to find it). What in particular were you thinking of changing? > Also, I don't think my theme manager is working correctly. Hi Kevino, I copied the List as I think I am asking questions/facing problems other may be going through. Ok, I got what you are saying...I use themes instead of templates. Within the themes, I can place/change my templates. What happens if I want to use more than one template per theme, say one for class pages and one for quizzes? Would I need to edit the python file, to make quizzes use something different than the default.tpl template? Also, I don't think my theme manager is working correctly. I have switched templates (to no frames) and published and nothing is different, I still get the original theme. Ideas? Hi Kevino, A few issues/suggestions/problems I have with 2.5b4. I have not been able to get system preferences to open. (win2k machine) In the tutorial, you need to explain the difference between templates = and themes. I think I understand the difference as a theme is an overarching project layout, while a template is a page design. True? When I open page properties, I can only choose the default template, I = have others in the template directory. I would like to be able to choose = others from there without renaming it to default every time.. Under the Help menu, in the About section, you should list the version = of Eclass. Is there a compatibility problem with previous versions of Eclass? If = so, you need some explanation on how to import them, or what files to delete to = use them with the new version. I just tried the Karrigell.exe file on an eclass created in 2.5b4 and it ran. However, it couldn't display the page. I ran the index.htm file separately, it has problems displaying the top left frame (menu.htm) and = the bottom left frame (menucntrl.htm) The main Frame shows up fine. After I copied them in(from a previous Version), it worked. However the menu graphics were gone, I then copied them in. Everything appeared, but the Karrigell ---Little bit later--- I figured out the problem with the Karrigell.exe file. I opened it up in notepad and noticed it points to index.html. Eclass builder uses = index.htm. It is funny and very frustrating how a single character can screw you = up. It works fine after I rename the index file. The search function does not work...neither search.py nor search.exe. When I added text to a page, it did not display even after I published. = I open the page to edit it, and it is there, so it saved the setting, it = just doesn't output. Same thing happens with Audio/video/image. ---Little bit later, again---- The problem with the displaying of the text/image/audio/video is the = template. I copied and renamed an old one to default.tpl and it worked = fine and everything showed up. I guess that is enough for now. Hi everyone, I've released a new version of EClass.Builder on Windows for testing. You can download it from: http://www.eclass.net/downloads/eclass-builder2.5b4.exe I will wait a few days for feedback and then post it on the web site for download. What's changed? - New localization (translation) system: EClass has a new system for localizing the interface into foreign languages. The new system is more automated (I can automatically update the translation dictionaries), can automatically detect and use the user's system language, and there's even a little program people can use to update the localization files. You can learn more about how to update the localization files by checking the help file, under "Advanced/Localizing EClass". I'd particularly like to hear feedback from people who are localizing EClass into Spanish or French on this. - Further improved FTP capabilities: now you can upload pages one-by-one, and there's a "Upload Files on Save" option that lets you automatically upload a file any time it is changed. - Theme import/export: You can now share themes with other users. - Manual filenames: Now you can tell EClass what you want the filename for a particular file to be, rather than having it decide. In addition, I've replaced the old help file in the EClass interface with the new one I've been working on, and I plan on migrating the web site to the new look next week as well. The draft can be found at: http://www.eclass.net/newlook Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kevin |

Hello all, I have come across a couple of differences between putting hyperlinks in an eClass page using the html editor of your choice vs. using hotlinks to create such links. 1. You can't link to other eClass pages using your html editor. You can only do that with hotlinks. (??) 2. When you create a link to a file (in the file folder)... a. if you are using hotlinks, the file will open in a new window b. if you are inserting a hyperlink using your html editor, the file will open in the main content frame rather than a new window. Is this true in all cases or just the result of settings on my computer? Barbara Fillip |

Hello Kevin, I can't figure out how to use themes and templates. I've had a problem with my pages. All pages are meant to have the same look. I've used a table, with three rows. You can see what I mean at http://www.knowledgefordevelopment.com/Teaching/ICTen/ICTs-Intro/index.h tm . The top and bottom rows are mainly for looks, they have a blue background and the middle row is for the main body of the text of that page. When I make revisions, the top row has a tendency to disappear for some reason. If I edit the page and reinsert the top row, then the next page loses its top row. I'm trying to find an effective way to have a consistent look for all pages without using the table if that's creating a problem. Is the answer a template or a theme? I don't understand how to use either. Barbara Fillip Knowledge for Development, LLC http://www.knowledgefordevelopment.com |

Dear Georgios, In terms of EClass's licensing, there are two issues: the copyright of the program itself, and copyright of products created using the EClass.Builder program. As for products you create using EClass.Builder, the copyright for those belongs to whoever built them - we retain no copyright over the content others produce. You are free to build and distribute e-learning modules using EClass.Builder as you please as they belong to you. As for the program itself, you are free to use the EClass.Builder program and even modify and/or re-distribute it, even charging for it - provided that you ensure that you redistribute the license/License.txt file along with it. The license.txt file contains other conditions (which are very few), but you should read it to understand them. EClass.Builder is copyright Tulane University, although any modifications you make belong to you. If you make modifications to the program, please make it clear that your version of the program is not the same as the version available for download at www.eclass.net. Dear All, I participate in a project funded by EU and a partner (University) is going to develop an e-learning application based on e-class or use e-class as is. They are getting money for it - lot of money. Is it legal? In our case there is a company that is going to use the products of these projects. Who owns the copyright for the e-learning application? As for the Karrigell problems, one thing I saw several times is that it was looking for FrontPage files that didn't exist, which was causing a 'crash' in Python. This is really strange. The strange thing is that even though they don't exist, IE is requesting them so it must think that it exists for some reason. I can probably make a workaround so that this 'fails' more gracefully. (i.e. does not produce an error) It seems to always happen with DOC files. Hmmm... This may explain the annoying problems that we have with Word asking for a name and password when you click to view a document. Maybe what is happening is that IE is programmed to, whenever you access a Word document (or office document) over the web, check the server to see if the document can be edited, and if so, provide the username/password prompt. Since this functionality would only work with FrontPage, it looks for a FrontPage information file which in this case doesn't exist. In any case, I'll try and patch this up and get a fix out in the next couple days. Thanks, Kevin |

Hi Kevin, What is the difference between Karrigell.exe and the httpserver.exe? (btw I am using 2.5b3 on a w2k machine) I have noticed that the autorun.inf now points to Karrigell.exe and not httpserver.exe. I have tried using the Karrigell.exe several times, but it doesn't want to open the swish-e search page. I am now getting python errors when using the Karrigell.exe. (attached) Ideas? Comments? Also the httpserver now seems to be running rrrrreal slow. Thanks, BJ William 'BJ' Cameron Payson Center Tulane University |

Hi all, I've come up with a draft of the new web site and documentation, and wanted to hear your thoughts. The developer documentation particularly is still a work in progress, but I'd like to have some feedback so that I can improve it. You can see the new site at: http://www.eclass.net/newlook/ Click on "Learn" in the top menubar, and then click on the Documentation link to see the new docs. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated! Thanks, Kevin |

Hi all, Early next week I want to release EClass.Builder 2.5 b3 but I wanted to get some feedback to make sure it was running OK on other peoples' machines first. You can download it here: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/eclass-builder2.5b3.exe I've added a few new features because they didn't take much work to put in and people were asking for them. =) These include: - Theme Manager (Tools->Theme Manager): visually preview themes and set the theme for the current EClass - Link Checker (Tools->Link Checker): Check your web hyperlinks for broken links (EClass checks internal links whenever you save or edit pages) - Theme Refresh (File->Refresh Theme): If you make changes to your Theme, you can use this command to apply those changes to your EClass - Cut/Copy/Paste: You can now cut, copy and paste the pages in your course to move them around. Drag and drop will likely make it into a future release, but it's a bit more complicated than I anticipated! - Import File (Page->Import File...): This command lets you add a PDF file, PowerPoint file, Flash movie, or whatever as a page. From here, my focus will be on documenting this version, updating the program to use the new icon and splash screen (and possibly a couple other cosmetic changes), and developing an updated web site to announce the new version and to highlight some of the changes that have happened in the program over the last year. Once all this has taken place, I will release a new version with a new tutorial and everything working as it should be, in English. I will also 'unveil' the web site on www.eclass.net. At this point, only bug fix changes will be made. Also at this point, if we have some folks who can do the translation work, I will submit all the new text introduced for French and Spanish translation. Once those changes have been made, and any remaining bugs resolved, I will release the new version as a final version. BTW, for those Mac users out there, I needed to add some fixes to the Mac version of wxPython for Mozilla to work with it, and those changes will make it into the next version of wxPython, due out probably within a month. Shortly thereafter, with any luck, you will get a Mac version of EClass.Builder 2.5 that matches the entire featureset of the windows version. =) Thanks, Kevin |

Hi, Is there a difference between creating a hyperlink to a file on an eClass page using an html editor and creating a hyperlink to the same file using hotwords? As long as the file is loaded in the File folder, it seems to work equally well. Is there a reason for using a hotword in such cases. Best regards, Barbara Fillip |

Hello everyone, I'm not totally new to eClass but just subscribed to the list. I've been playing with various versions of eClass for at least a couple of years. I'm now finalizing a self-paced course on CD-ROM using eClass. I'm definitely not a tech person but I like to figure out how things work or how to make them work. Kevin has been a great help!... usually trying to explain to me why things are not working or what I'm doing wrong. I hope to learn a few new tricks through this list. I'm not using some of the more advanced functions of the newest eClass yet (search, themes. ) but I'm finally putting a little bit of multimedia (audio/video and a flash presentation) into the course. Yesterday, I figured out how to create a graphic with hotspots (hyperlinks), using hotwords. It's a map of the world with some text placed over specific areas of the map. Here's what I did: 1. Used an existing world map and added text to it (using Microsoft Image Composer) 2. Inserted the image on a web page (using FrontPage) 3. Added a table below the image with each of the text elements that are also on the image (and more text details) 4. Loaded the web page in its appropriate location in my eClass course project 5. Created hotwords for each of the text elements on the page 6. Noted the URL created automatically by eClass for each of these hotword hyperlinks 7. Loaded the web page in Frontpage, created hotspots and linked each to the respective hotword hyperlink This works because I want to have the text elements both on the image itself and in a table below the image. It was fun but there must be an easier way to do this. I look forward to any feedback and other ideas for making the most of eClass. Hi Stefano, Unfortunately, the tutorial is pretty much all that's there, although I've just started a little project to update the web site and documentation for the new 2.5 version. EClass.Builder been under heavy development for most of this year, so the docs would have changed by the time they were written. ;-) In the meantime, I'll be happy to answer your questions! I should note also that the "EClass Page" plugin, which is the default plugin in EClass, was designed partially to help us migrate our data out of a proprietary system (built in Toolbook) that was not Internet-friendly. Some of the functionality in EClass was originally created in order to minimize the migration work involved in converting our courses. The term hotword, BTW, is a carry over from this old system. =) Hotwords are basically a way of creating hyperlinks in the page text. In addition to creating a "plain" web link, you can also create a new EClass Page as a hotword, and specify which media file(s) you'd like to appear when the learner clicks on the hyperlink. When you save an EClass Page (it is automatically saved when you click OK), EClass automatically scans the page text for any hotwords you created, generates the necessary HTML code to create the hotword page, and generates the hyperlink. For objectives, those refer to the "learning objectives" of that particular page/module, so that the learner can see just what knowledge, skills, etc. the author would like them to obtain from that particular page or module. Note that part of the reason for the somewhat awkward design of the EClass Page format was the lack of a good HTML or rich text editor in wxPython. That's why the process is not 'visual' - the user inserts files and EClass does it's magic by generating the proper HTML code to make it all work. With wxMozilla's editing mode now working (see the "web page" plugin), I'm rapidly working on resolving that problem so that "hotwords" can be created more naturally simply by selecting the text and clicking the "hyperlink" button. ;-) I fully intend to make the "web page" plugin a fully multimedia-aware HTML editor over the next few months so that people can have more control over the look and feel of their content, and so that the process is more intuitive, at least in the sense that most everyone is comfortable using a word processor. ;-) Please feel free to let me know if you have more questions! Hi everyone, For those of you who downloaded EClass.Builder 2.5 beta 2, I forgot to mention a pretty major bug in the HTML editor. It will only allow you to save data once per session - to save again, you must close and reopen the web page editor. I have *finally* found a fix for this bug (it is a problem internal to Mozilla which is why it took me so long to figure out a solution) and it will be in the next beta, which will hopefully be released in the next couple weeks. In short, just remember that the new plugins are very much beta material and still have outstanding bugs. The HTML editor is probably the most significant new addition in terms of code, and also in terms of bugs, so expect it to take more debugging than other pieces. Also, I am working on improving the FTP uploading code. Now it will show its progress both in terms of each individual file, and in terms of the "total upload progress". This way, you can see if there is a particularly large file which is slowing down the upload, and if there are any connection problems they will become very visible. I've also ensured that it will not upload the server executable and other large files not needed for the web site version, which should decrease upload times considerably, especially on dialup connections. Expect these bug fixes, and some others, to make it into a new release within the next couple weeks. Any additional bugs people find that are reported will hopefully make it into the next release as well. =) Thanks, Kevin |

Hi all, I've released a new beta of EClass.Builder for Windows. It's got several new features, the major ones being: - Web Page Plugin: Edit your pages visually, like with a word processor or web page editor - Cross-browser preview: Preview window now lets you preview in Mozilla as well as Internet Explorer - Themes: Create your own look and feel for your EClasses! - Smarter publishing: You no longer need to publish your entire course before previewing or publishing - French translation! More information and the download link is here: http://www.eclass.net/Downloads/windows-beta.html This version is going to be used in a training seminar on Oct. 15 so if anyone who has time could take a look at this version it would be greatly appreciated! After the next beta, where a few more tweaks will be added (like a theme manager), then some new documentation will be produced and the web site will also be revamped. (I'm building the new version in EClass. =) Also, with regards to the Mac version, I may be able to have a Mac version of the current beta out in a week or two. I am able to embed Mozilla on Mac as well as on Windows and Linux, but I haven't been able to start Mozilla's editing mode for the web page editor. Once this is resolved, I will try and get out a Mac beta. The only feature it will miss is the OpenOffice DOC/RTF support and that is because 1.1 is not available on Mac yet. :-( Thanks, Kevin |
