I tried to run Shadow Man in a window with default DxWnd settings, but the game throws an error "DirectX initialisation failed / Unable to initialize Direct 3D" and then crashes. DirectX version hook set to DX8-9 don't handle windowed mode properly; DX1-7 has the same DirectX error.

I tried the game on my pc, but it doesn't start, though it shows some splash screens and I don't get the error message you had.
I think it won't be easy to replicate your very same problem: could you capure a log and post it here?
Strange, only resolutions higher than 1024x768 has this error (set in config utility), smaller resolutions work fine without error. Here's the log where it crashes.
Even stranger, the word "ERROR" never appears in the log!
Ah! But DxWnd doesn't support emulated surfaces bigger than that! Try setting the Video / "Screen Resolution" switch to "Monitor native modes"....

That's perfect, using "Monitor native modes" fixed it, so I can play at higher resolutions now. Thanks for the support!
