Hi Gho - well i dont know what has changed but Janes F/a-18 is working better with dxwnd now in that if you install it and apply the 1.01f patch and (optionally) the Team Super Hornet patch, it starts and all you have to do is really just move a screen out of the way once - a duplicate looking screen o fht emenu gets created, just move it and access the working game underneath

the only remaining hindrance slightly is that in the game, when flying if you select the sidewinder mode with its growling hud change, then framrates dropped considerably, also same happens i htink for some radar settings - would you have any suggestions or be able to check this when you are able to (if you want to) or if someone else knows how to utilitise dxwnd better than myself, them also

I spent some time on this game, and it was quite frustrating. The matter seems to be that the game is quite complex, it uses multiple windows, overlays and other advanced features of mixed GDI and ddraw ... all this wounldn't be so bad if at least I were getting replicable results. But unfortunately this complexity is like a cards castle, if you move anything it may crash.
In particular, that holds not only for changes of DxWnd version or configuration, but it also depends on the computer and video card capabilities and on the Windows patches and shims.
So, it's not too strange that all of the sudden you get better results, but that may last up to the next Windows patch!
In any case, it's worth checking the situation. I think I can replicate with no problems the game settings with 1.01f patch and the last DxWnd release. For the moment I would leave the Team Super Hornet patch apart. It could be necessary to share your working configuration: could you extract the configuration (right-click and Export) and post it here?

ah right, finicky one this is. here is my config, I don't think I have done much. i had experimented with some tweaks like allowing system memory etc, but that produced only crashes upon attempting to fly. also if i try to run it full screen it will crash if i attempt to fly - only running in a window seems to work, - maybe you know a better way.

i think though whatever it is that is happening with radar and missile mode with the growling AIM that is causing the frame rate drop - if that could be solved then it would be a pretty big deal!

I set a testbed and in effect things MAY go much better ... sometimes.
I installed the game, applied the 1.01f patch and replaced the game with a cracked exe, then I imported your configuration file and tried to run the game on my portable.
The trick of moving the overlapped window aside is great (I knew it before) because it allows to bypass the long intro movies and get to the many game menu panels.
The panels work well enough, though the window could minimize and resume to a different size and the mouse control could work well only in certain cases. It seems that setting "Libs / GDI" to "Scaled GDI calls" could improve things.
Another possible good trick is setting the game resolution (in the game options panel) to the same value of the window size. I used 800x600.
But the bigger problem was in the flight scenes, that crashed the game. I got them working once by setting "DirectX / Support offscreen 3D", but after a few minutes it no longer worked.... how weird!
So, it seems that the game hasn't lost its bad habit of being quite unreliable. But the progress is impressive, I hope to be able to improve it a little more....

A lucky shot: this time the game instant mission started. Either there is a control problem or I don't know how to fly the plane, but I crashed it in no time. Anyway, the graphic was ok!

okay so you suggest i set offscreen 3d? i do have my game window and in game res the same - that is 1024x768 and was getting the slowdown still

okay i tried the scaled gdi and the offscreen 3d options but the game frames still slow down with certain hud settings

Sorry for the misunderstanding, the options that I suggested were useful to allow myself to play the game, but if your setting is working there's probably no need to change it.
About the slow downs, instead, I don't know all the game interface, so maybe you could help me with some directions about how to get to " select the sidewinder mode with its growling hud change" or reach other slow parts of the game.
