I like the idea of the right hand side, but am unsure, like you point out,
whether this would work practically, I will do some tests to see how it
works.  Once I've got some tests together I will submit some screen shots
and we can vote :-)

Personally I don't like popups for this either, but thought it an option
worth asking about.

This should be easy enough, a base help control can take care of the
preferences which could be set board level.  1 problem with it though, it
would leave two separate help areas to maintain.

For an idea about how I was going to add help at the bottom visit
(http://cp.redfoxhosting.com/?Demo=True), logon and at the bottom of the
page is a button "?Show Quickhelp"

Agreed, there is a lot of minor work to do before we are RC ready, the major
part of the framework is in place however so its probably a good time to
switch to beta.

There are dozens of UI changes needed so RSS should fit in somewhere along
the way.  I will be fairly busy soon for at least 6 months so I want to see
if I can get a lot of the niggling UI issues resolved asap.

If we ignore the alpha for now, get both sides synched up including post
reply bug and delete post functionality and then we'll go for beta 1.  This

It might be worth looking at if you get stuck, but as far as I'm concerned
however you want to play is ok with me.

Yes, if you choose board wide it will look across all categories/topics, or
focus on individual categories/topics etc.  15 seems like a sensible limit,
its probably worth adding a param to specify the number of posts with the
default being 15.

I went ahead and implemented the procs, the consequences of not were too
great when multiple boards were created.  You chould have the following
procs which validate the above:

DNFI_CATEGORY_EXISTS
DNFI_FORUM_EXISTS
DNFI_POST_EXISTS
DNFI_TOPIC_EXISTS

All these validate that the user can *see* the item, of not raise an
exception.

Its just occurred to me that there could be a potential issue when
validating posts, topics, forums and categories.  I thought I'd share it
here to see if its just my thinking :-)

At the moment any validation is done by verifying the existence of the
ID,
this could potentially open up a hole where a user on board 1, who has
the
rights to delete a topic, can delete a topic on board 2.  This occurs
because only the existence of the id is verified.  What I think we need,
and
this is where I need some verification as I don't want to add too much
overhead, is a series of functions which will take the id in question,
along
with the user id and verify that this user has access to the specified
ID
for posts, topics, forums and categories.  I have picked on the user id
as
this is returned for all external functions, those that begin DNF_, when
a
call to DNF_CHECK_TASK_PERMISSIONS is made.

Any thoughts welcome.

I saw your email regarding the guy who did the RSS feed stuff from
eggheadcafe (I think it was...Can't seem to locate the email just at the
moment).  I see he used an open source RSS feed generator.  I see his
thinking behind this.  The only problem is that it is under another type
of open source licence.  We already have two different ones (firebird
and mysql).  I think adding a third would just complicate the matter.
Really, for what we need I would suggest that I continue knocking up a
simple rss interface/file access interface.  I will be interested to
hear your thoughts on this as I don't want to do any more if you would
prefer we change to an open source style RSS feed system.

The rss standard can handle up to 15 items if you want to go for
something like that and then make it configurable, e.g. 15 or less for
the board settings.  Are you planning on making the configuration part
of the board settings, e.g. what feeds are included as part of the board
(forum, category or board wide)?

I was thinking along the lines of returning the last 10 posts, visible

the user requesting the feed.  This will be by forum, category or board
wide.  Only part of the post should be returned, along with a hyperlink

the topic within the forum.

Once I have finished the post/edit post/preview post stuff I will create

bol object that will return the last 10 posts for you.

Another thing to keep in mind, you can provide an RSS feed with a
username
and password, I havn't looked into this at all so have no idea how this
side
works.

All the above points ive taken from my use of RSS feeds, you might want
to
add more stuff if required.

This issue could have been resolved by now.  I am working my way through
my emails which I have flagged for reply so I apologize if this is the
case.

Regarding a later email on the developers list where we discuss going to
Beta, I have found this comment concerning validation.  I think this is
an area that needs resolving and putting to bed prior to going to beta
1.  I agree with the concern raised in the email.  And changes to
validation will affect a large number of SP's and could change a number
of them.  This would require quite a bit of work and retesting.

RSS should be available for initial testing around Beta 2 if I can pull
my finger out and get going again with it. =20

Beta 1 won't be released officially until MySQL support is complete
anyway,
don't worry too much about rushing it through, if your away your away.

I might do is install the Firebird Beta 1 onto my website, once its
ready.
I am still a little concerned about validation (see

99]), to fix this post Beta 1 would require a huge update script as it
would
affect a large number of DNF_ procedures.

This is something that could be added to Beta 2 or Beta 3 without any
issues, it shouldn't affect the overall karma of the forum at this

It could prove useful to leave it until Beta 3, Beta 2 could be bugfix's

Beta 1, Release Candidate 1 will have to include RSS but as long as its
introduced in Beta 3 at latest there shouldn't be a problem.

I have now implemented a few more procs, including

DNFI_TOPIC_EXISTS
DNFI_CATEGORY_EXISTS
DNFI_FORUM_EXISTS

Each of these verifies that the user can *see* the topic/category/forum that
they are trying to update, this should make dnfBB a lot more secure in a
multi board environment.

I also noticed that the same code was replicated in about a dozen places and
created the following proc

DNFI_USER_GET_BOARD, to retrieve the board id

Good news!!!

Beta 1 functionality is now complete (I think), I am still a little
undecided on wether to include subscribe to topic
(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1435742&group_id=1
52364&atid=784892), I think its important enough, and simple enough to
implement.  Any thoughts welcome.

Summary: Optional Auth code/word verification for posts/signup

Initial Comment:
Add support for authorisation code for user signup, and
optional (admin specified) authorisation code when
posting/replying to topics.  

When used for posting/replying to topics must be
configurable on a forum by forum basis.
