The "Alarming on" line doesn't mean that there is necessarily an active alarm for that table row, but rather that devmon is monitoring that row for *potential* alarms. If you are only monitoring certain rows (via the "ao" flag, either in the template or in the device-specific DEVMON flag in your bb-hosts) and you're still getting "alarming on" lines for all rows, then there's seomthing broken in devmon. If that's the case, please let me know :) -Eric > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li... I was curious if anyone else is seeing the issue I am. When I do not disable alarm messages (TABLE:noalarmsmsg), I see alarm messages for every row regardless of the color status. green, yellow, red. |

Hi Eric, thanks for your answer. I was already implementing some test with NCV when = your email came in. Your third solution seems the most obvious one to me. = I now monitor some ups'es and graph the load of the ups'es. Maybe it's=20 wise to write a universal data parser to integrate in the hobbit ? The=20 idea to hide some info in the HTML tags is already something that I like.=20 But who will Hobbit-NCV parse those message ? I like the integration with Hobbit, keep up the good work. Regards, Benoit Vanderbeck Adj. Sysadm V.A.P.H. tel:+32 2 2258480 fax:+32 2 2258588 email: ben...@vl... "Schwimmer, Eric E *HS" <EE...@hs...>=20 Verzonden door: dev...@li... 12-10-2006 20:17 Antwoord a.u.b. aan dev...@li... Aan <dev...@li...> Cc Onderwerp Re: [Devmon] Question Hi Benoit, =20 This problem stems from the fact that the rrd files that hobbit builds=20 natively are generated by compiled code, within the hobbit program, which=20 look for specific strings in tests that it knows about (i.e. conn, http,=20 ftp, ssh, etc). If hobbit can?t find string it is looking for in the test = (or it doesn?t know anything about the test, like if=5Fstat), then it won?t= =20 be able to collect data to write to an rrd file (and thus won?t be able to = graph it). =20 Right now there are three solutions to this problem: =20 1. If hobbit knows about the test that devmon generates (for instance = some of the included devmon templates generate ?cpu? tests, which hobbit=20 knows about. However the devmon output is different from what hobbit=20 expects, so you don?t get any rrd data) you can tweak your devmon template = so that it matches bb-xsnmp, or some other client that hobbit knows about=20 and supports rrd collection for. =20 2. Code your own rrd collector (in C) for hobbit, or patch an=20 existing hobbit collector. This is the solution I?ve chosen to go with,=20 for the moment, as it provides me with the most flexibility for=20 manipulating the data. I?ve released my patches & modules in the past on=20 this list, however I?m loathe to maintain them, as they need to be updated = and re-applied with each hobbit upgrades. =20 3. Use the ?nonhtml? TABLE flag in your message file, to create an=20 NCV format table, which hobbit can process (read the hobbitd=5Frrd man page= =20 for more info on this. This table format isn?t really pleasing to the=20 eye, however; so you come up with an ugly page with a graph. One idea I=20 just now had is to embed the NCV portion of the data in an HTML comment=20 (i.e. =DF! =E0), so it doesn?t show up on the web page, and then include th= e=20 HTML version as well. This will double the size of the history log stored = on disk, but I doubt anybody will really complain about that J If people=20 think this is a good idea I can roll it into 0.2.3. =20 You can also create your own custom rrd script (once again see the=20 hobbitd=5Frrd man page) to handle rrd data, but that creates A LOT of=20 overhead if you are monitoring 1000+ devices, and at that rate you might=20 as well just take a jab at creating your own hobbit rrd module in C. =20 HTH, -Eric =20 From: dev...@li...=20 [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of=20 ben...@vl... =20 Hrm, haven't encountered this problem, yet. Have you tried using the hobbitd_alert program to simulated a red message send to the alert daemon? =20 Assuming your hobbit home dir is /usr/local/hobbit and you wanted to test to see what pages/emails an 'if_stat' devmon test going red would generate, this command would simulate it: =20 /usr/local/hobbit/server/bin/hobbitd_alert myrouter if_stat 300 red =20 If you don't see any lines that start with '*** Match with', that means your hobbit-alerts.cfg file isn't set up to deal with the devmon tests. If this is the case, you should consult the appropriate docs and do so. =20 However, if you ARE getting "match with" lines, but still aren't getting pages, that points to some deeper problem with devmon (and possibly within the way that hobbit treats devmon messages, although I'm more apt to point fingers at my own rickety code than Henrik's). =20 -Eric =20 ________________________________ From: dev...@li... Right now hobbit barks when it can't connect to the display server; I could add some more functionality to devmon so that "critical" errors result in an email sent, or something along those lines. > 2) do a bb $bbdisplay "query $hostname.conn" before polling=20 > each device and if the result is not "green" send clear as=20 > status for each test of that device (so they'll not become=20 > purple or start to alert everyone because a router is down...=20 > It will also solve problem when a router before your router=20 > is down because it will be the only one reporting the error=20 > if you configured the routing) As above. This would require having the bb client installed on the devmon system, as well as making a shell call out to it (I try to avoid making shell calls, since they are expensive). I've tried getting two-way communication going between devmon and hobbit in the past, but I've been defeated by some weirdness in perl's IO::Socket routines (I can get the client to send or receive, but not both. However, I've written a C client that works fine. Go figure). I'll poke at my two-way communication some more, maybe I'm not not flushing a buffer properly, or something. > 3) if the hosts seems ok but when getting data via snmp you=20 > get an error report yellow or better clear for the tests of=20 > that host and report errors in the dm columns related to all=20 > problem encountered (invalid password or whatever you get as=20 > errors instead of only reporting them in the log file). Hi Benoit, =20 This problem stems from the fact that the rrd files that hobbit builds natively are generated by compiled code, within the hobbit program, which look for specific strings in tests that it knows about (i.e. conn, http, ftp, ssh, etc). If hobbit can't find string it is looking for in the test (or it doesn't know anything about the test, like if_stat), then it won't be able to collect data to write to an rrd file (and thus won't be able to graph it). =20 Right now there are three solutions to this problem: =20 1. If hobbit knows about the test that devmon generates (for instance some of the included devmon templates generate 'cpu' tests, which hobbit knows about. However the devmon output is different from what hobbit expects, so you don't get any rrd data) you can tweak your devmon template so that it matches bb-xsnmp, or some other client that hobbit knows about and supports rrd collection for. =20 2. Code your own rrd collector (in C) for hobbit, or patch an existing hobbit collector. This is the solution I've chosen to go with, for the moment, as it provides me with the most flexibility for manipulating the data. I've released my patches & modules in the past on this list, however I'm loathe to maintain them, as they need to be updated and re-applied with each hobbit upgrades. =20 3. Use the 'nonhtml' TABLE flag in your message file, to create an NCV format table, which hobbit can process (read the hobbitd_rrd man page for more info on this. This table format isn't really pleasing to the eye, however; so you come up with an ugly page with a graph. One idea I just now had is to embed the NCV portion of the data in an HTML comment (i.e. <--! -->), so it doesn't show up on the web page, and then include the HTML version as well. This will double the size of the history log stored on disk, but I doubt anybody will really complain about that :-) If people think this is a good idea I can roll it into 0.2.3. =20 You can also create your own custom rrd script (once again see the hobbitd_rrd man page) to handle rrd data, but that creates A LOT of overhead if you are monitoring 1000+ devices, and at that rate you might as well just take a jab at creating your own hobbit rrd module in C. =20 HTH, -Eric =20 ________________________________ From: dev...@li... I'm not sure if the memory leak is in devmon or in some of the supporting libraries, but the only templates I've been working with are the brocade switches. Part of it could be in the error message delivery; I get lots of errors on these, some of which I don't understand.=20 Case in point: These are the OIDs for port status -- swFCPortPhyState : .1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.3 : branch swFCPortOpStatus : .1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.4 : branch swFCPortAdmStatus : .1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.5 : branch swFCPortLinkState : .1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.6 : branch swFCPortIndex : .1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.1 : branch swFCPortIndex is the physical port number, 1 through 32. So what does this error mean? [06-09-15@08:22:23] No SNMP data found for ifName on whitewater [06-09-15@08:22:23] Cant find snmp data for swFCPortInde* on whitewater This is the corresponding message file -- TABLE: Port Number|Port state|Admin Status|Operational Status|Link Status {swFCPortIndex}|{swFCPortPhyStateTxt.color}{swFCPortPhyStateTxt}|{swPort AdmTxt.color} {swPortAdmTxt}|{swPortOpTxt.color}{swPortOpTxt}|{sw PortLinkTxt.color} {swPortLinkTxt} And swFCPortIndex is reported correctly. But I get the error for every switch on every cycle. I'm using MRTG to track port usage (the pretty graphs impress the boss, and help me track trends) but I want to get devmon up for actual port status and infrastructure checks. Running the devmon -readbbhost is just for updating the internal database with newly added systems to the bbhosts file, so that the daemon will queery them in the next loop. Hi Gbenga, There might two two separate issues at play, here: One is that devmon is failing its snmp query against the remote device = (which can be one of any number of problems, i.e. wrong snmp read id, = wrong snmp version, device doesn't support requested OID, snmp not set = up on the remote device, snmp queries being blocked on the remote device = due to an acl/firewall, etc etc). Have you verified (via a commandline = snmpget/walk) that you are able to query this OID on the remote device = from the machine that you are running devmon on? Secondly, it looks like you have defined the "ciscoMemoryPoolUsed" oid = alias twice; once in your oids file, and once in your transforms file. = Keep in mind that oid aliases must be unique (ie they cannot be = redefined) and that aliases defined in the oids file and transforms file = overlap. I would suggest renaming the alias in the transforms file to = something that describes the transform that you are applying to it (i.e. = ciscoMemoryPoolUsedTxt if you are using a SWITCH transform, or = ciscoMemoryPoolUsedPct if you are using a MATH transform to convert it = to a percentage, etc). Yeap. Well the CVS on the devmon sf site isn't even set up yet; but yes, I'd move everything to my home server (although not until after I've replaced the 60 year old telephone cable that my home DSL is running off of). =20 -Eric =20 ________________________________ From: dev...@li... See my previous post about regsub on leaves. I made another (very minor) fix in the same file but I don't have code here, I'll post it whenever possible, probably tomorrow. > Also, I've been pondering moving away from sourceforge(t) and throwing > it up on my home server (along with a CVS server, so other people can > get their fingers in the pie). Thoughts on this? Having access to the latest dev code sounds interesting. Have a great evening. --=20 Ga=EBtan |

Hello all, First of all, thanks to all contributors to this project, I discovered it today, downloaded the latest version (0.2.2) and started some templates for our SonicWALL appliances, this is really nice piece software and very well documented. After a few hours of work, I already got very convincing results. This looks really promising. While I was creating a template, I discovered that it was not possible to apply a REGSUB on a leaf. In other words, if you have something like this in "oids" : -<start file>----------------------------- sysDesc : .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 : leaf -<end file>------------------------------- And the following in "transforms" : -<start file>----------------------------- ModelTxt : REGSUB : {sysDesc} /SonicWALL (.*) \(SonicOS.*\)/$1/ SonicOSTxt : REGSUB : {sysDesc} /SonicWALL .* \(SonicOS (.*)\)/$1/ -<end file>------------------------------- It does not work as expected. (I wanted to split the "description" into two separated strings) I fixed the problem doing the following changes in dm_tests.pm : -<start file>----------------------------- 1945,1947c1945 < my $exp_val =3D $oids->{$primary_oid}{'val'}; < my $eval_cmd =3D "\$exp_val =3D~ s$expression"; < my $result =3D eval($eval_cmd); --- > my $result =3D eval($expression); 1949c1947 < do_log("Failed eval for REGSUB transform on $oid on $device ($@)", 0); --- > do_log("Failed eval for MATH transform on $oid on $device ($@)"= , 0); 1955c1953 < $oids->{$oid}{'val'} =3D $exp_val; --- > $oids->{$oid}{'val'} =3D $result; -<end file>------------------------------- I don't know if this was the best way to do. Maybe this is already fixed in a newer non-released version ? In any case, comments are welcome. Have a good day. --=20 Ga=EBtan Frenoy (gaetan [=E0] frenoy.net) - GnuPG key 0xDCD1A235 |

Hi -=20 Installed devmon today on Solaris 8 machine. Starting devmon as the Hobbit user with=20 su - hobbit -c "/usr/local/devmon/devmon" Immediately afterward, "ps -ef | grep devmon" shows devmon running but then the process is no longer in the process table after a 3-5 seconds. My BBDISPLAY server isn't being updated, and there are ~no~ entires at all the devmon log file. Nether does the system messages file give any clues.=20 Hoping someone can shed some light on this issue? What could be the cause o this problem? Possible solutions? Dean Casey =20 =20 =20 =20 |
