Well it could be nice to do this: each polling period do: 1) a bb $bbdispay "ping" to check if hobbit is available, if not available report it to a log file or if possible let the user configure an alert script (mail/script execution) 2) do a bb $bbdisplay "query $hostname.conn" before polling each device and if the result is not "green" send clear as status for each test of that device (so they'll not become purple or start to alert everyone because a router is down... It will also solve problem when a router before your router is down because it will be the only one reporting the error if you configured the routing) 3) if the hosts seems ok but when getting data via snmp you get an error report yellow or better clear for the tests of that host and report errors in the dm columns related to all problem encountered (invalid password or whatever you get as errors instead of only reporting them in the log file). This will prevent purple too.. With this we will not get devmon blocked or polling of devices that are down/unreachable, will never get purple (really not nice to see and not really needed because it could be the device that is down or a wrong password) and some more information in the dm column to solve those problems.... Those are just some suggestion I would like to see in the next version :D=20 Thanks for the good job :D Francesco > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li...=20 > [mailto:dev...@li...] On=20 > Behalf Of Schwimmer, Eric E *HS > Sent: Tuesday, August 29, 2006 6:44 PM > To: dev...@li... > Subject: Re: [Devmon] Little problem with devmon >=20 >=20 > This is most likely because the devmon daemon will throw a=20 > fatal error and quit if it is unable to reach the hobbit=20 > server (this was intended to prevent uncessary network/cpu=20 > traffic; polling a device doesn't help if you don't have a=20 > display server to report to).=20 >=20 > However, I myself have been bit by this in the past. This is most likely because the devmon daemon will throw a fatal error and quit if it is unable to reach the hobbit server (this was intended to prevent uncessary network/cpu traffic; polling a device doesn't help if you don't have a display server to report to).=20 However, I myself have been bit by this in the past. I'm thinking that I should change this to a warning, as opposed to a fatal error. Opinions? -Eric -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Hi I'm working on some templates and I will send them to the list. I'm not a programmer so I just tell you the things that (in my opinion) could be improved: - devmon doesn't look at the hobbit disabled status. it would be nice if it does. - devmon doesn't look at the conn = red status so even if the host is unreacheable he is trying to do the snmpwalk. - an option to specify the snmp version as a devmon tag (in the bb-hosts file) Have you discussed with Henrik if he will patch the hobbit rrd collector? I also do have 2 questions about templates: - If I use the MATH function I always get two digits after the . (like 36.00 degrees Celcius) How can I prevent this? - Is it possible to sort the entry's of a table? thanks again, Peter Jakobs "Schwimmer, Eric E *HS" <EE...@hs...> Sent by: dev...@li... 22-08-2006 22:15 Please respond to dev...@li... The hobbit rrd collector doesn't support capturing data from the devmon output yet; to get that to work you'll have to either patch the hobbit rrd/la.c file to support the devmon output, or change the template text to be bb-xsnmp-like. Chances are that if the template isn't in the devmon release, nobody has written a template for it yet (or at least decided not to share theres). If you do end up writing a template, please post it to the devmon mailing list and I will make sure to include it in the latest tarball. Regards, -Eric -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... I am working a ports test for a cisco-ws6509. Basically I am listing all the ports and their speed, RX info / TX info. a modified if_stat that also checks for network errors. When a port on the switch shows errors, I see at the top of the report, Alarmin on.... but instead of just listing the primary aliases that have met a threshold, it is listing every single one. I.e.: Interface error rates: Alarming on (sc0,sl0,1/1,1/2,15/1,4/1,4/2,4/3,4/4,4/5,4/6,4/7,4/8,4/9,4/10) Alarming on (4/11,4/12,4/13,4/14,4/15,4/16,4/17,4/18,4/19,4/20) Alarming on (4/21,4/22,4/23,4/24,4/25,4/26,4/27,4/28,4/29,4/30) Alarming on (4/31,4/32,4/33,4/34,4/35,4/36,4/37,4/38,4/39,4/40) Alarming on (4/41,4/42,4/43,4/44,4/45,4/46,4/47,4/48,5/1,5/2) ...... Not sure if I am doing anything wrong or if this is a bug, I am using Devmon version 0.2.2. Also, when performing mutiple threshold checks on a each entry of a repeater. Is there a global .color variable for that line ? |

Hi All, I have just installed a couple of new routers cisco 7204VXR. However I guess its not compatible with the 7206 router for which I have a template. On Power I have an error of the first power unit being removed even this is even installed. On if_col, if_dsc and if_err I get blank status as there are undefined status on some seriel subinterfaces. Would anybody have a valid template for this router model og explain me how I can copy/modify a template to fix the problem. BR Thomas |

I'm having a problem when trying to get an OID value displayed in a template. I added the following line to the 'oids' in my template... devHostname : .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0 : leaf In my 'messages', I have... Interface error rates: TABLE: Interface|Speed|Rate in (load %)|Rate out (load %)|Load Trend {ifName}{ifAliasBox}|{ifSpeed}|{ifInLoad.color}{ifInSpeed} ({ifInLoad}%){ifInLoad.errors}|{ifOutLoad.color}{ifOutSpeed} ({ifOutLoad}%){ifOutLoad.errors}|<a href="/mrtg/?={devHostname}">Load</a> But once I save the changes to 'messages', the devmon[master] process tanks, and devmon stops polling. The only solution is for me to remove <a href="/mrtg/?={devHostname}">Load</a> from my messages file. Is there a problem adding a leaf value OID to a table? |

Hello All, =20 I have come across an interesting issue. I have written a template to monitor the Insight Management that run on Compaq/HP servers. I have 3 tests in total; cim, array, & iml. The iml test is what is causing the issue. IML (Integrate Management Log) is a log of hardware events. If the IML is empty, and I walk the OID I will see: =20 .1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.2.11.3.1.1 SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.232.6.2.11.3.1.1 =3D No Such Instance currently exists at this OID Which makes sense since the log is empty. But when devmon queiries the device, all my Insight Manager tests (cim, array, iml ) have issues. Below is a snippet of my devmon.log =20 [06-06-13@16:27:01] No SNMP data found for cpqTempCelc on Server.Domain.com [06-06-13@16:27:01] No SNMP data found for cpqMemSpeed on Server.Domain.com [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqFanTypeText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqTempLocText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqPwrStatText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqFanLocText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqPwrRedunText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqPwrHotPlugText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqFanPresentText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqPwrPresentText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for trans_switch on cpqCPUStatusText [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for cpqMemBoardIndx for cim msg [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for cpqTempCond for cim msg [06-06-13@16:27:01] Primary OID cpqTempActionText in cim table is a non-repeater [06-06-13@16:27:01] Missing repeater data for cpqFanCond for cim msg [06-06-13@16:27:01] No SNMP data found for cpqLogEntrySeverity on Server.Domain.com [06-06-13@16:27:01] No SNMP data found for cpqLogEntryNumber on Server.Domain.com [06-06-13@16:27:01] No SNMP data found for cpqLogEntryCount on Server.Domain.com =20 I am guessing that the somehow the status of "No SNMP data found" is not being reset and thus casuing the other test snmp query test to fail ? =20 I guess I also need to ask for a feature request for a flag to pass for a particular OID that being empty is ok... =20 Thank you, Steven |

Hi Craig, Thanks for your response. I adapted my bb-hosts to only perform check that can be performed (so no quota nor snapmirror), but now I know wwhy the errors appeared. I just managed to let the CacheAge show up (Hooray!!!) which I think is an important parameter to check on your filer. Your netapp.tar-file is great example to see the possibilities of devmon. When I am ready (transforming minutes to seconds) I will send you the stuff if you think it is useable. Hi Peter, Not sure if you've already sorted it but on using DEVMON:tests(cpu, snapmirror, stats, status, volume) or whichever tests are applicable to your filer it got the volumes working so it does look like it was timing out looking for non existent quotas. Thanks, Craig -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of Whilding, Craig Sent: 02 June 2006 14:29 To: dev...@li... Subject: Re: [Devmon] NetApp & DevMon 0.2 I think the problem may have something to do with the timeout delay for me at least. At the other site the filer shows everything including total size of the volumes but doesn't show size of volume used and therefore also the percentages saying no oid data returned. When testing this filer from the box here it didn't get to the volume oid's at all and only found half of the snapmirror data so I'm guessing a timeout is the cause. Ill have to run a debug and see what's happening. Yes there are some options for what to test you can put in bb-hosts; it's in the main readme. Craig -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... I think the problem may have something to do with the timeout delay for me at least. Don't worry, your previous message only turned up today! Some of my filers don't have snapmirror or quota and I have specified which tests to do in the bb-hosts file for these. I used to use a script that could test the on/off oid's but I havnt got a way of putting this in devmon currently. What version is your filer software? I have 7.0.1R1 on my site here that works but a filer at another site running 7.0.4 doesn't appear to have volume working either. Looking through its logs it's saying no data for the oid's. Ill try an snmp walk on the oids just to check they are there! Thanks, Craig -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... I have to add that the tests DO show in Hobbit (Thanks!). Since we do not have snapmirror and quota enabled, I guess I have to remove them from the template directory since the output does not have any value. The volume-part is the one that is responsible for the errors I think. We do have them ;-) I'll have a look at the volume/oids-file later on but any suggestions are very much appreciated. Hi Craig, I've trying to run devmon 0.2.2 using your NetApp-tar-file, but I get the following errors when I run devmon in the foreground; what am I doing wrong?! Hi, the patch fails with the attached errors under the 4.2 builds and only seems to work on 4.1.2. Thanks, Craig -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of Schwimmer, Eric E *HS Sent: 18 May 2006 15:52 To: dev...@li... Subject: RE: [Devmon] RE: NetApp & DevMon 0.2 Not to my knowledge. I've been ably to just copy my modified version over the newer versions and compile without making modifications to my version. Try putting the attached patch in your hobbit src directory and running a patch -p0 < patch-devmon-collectors. Then recompile and copy over the hobbit/hobbit_rrd binary to your $BBHOME/bin dir, and restart hobbit. -Eric Schwimmer Network Engineer UVA HSCS Network Engineering =20 > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li...=20 > [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf=20 > Of Whilding, Craig > Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2006 10:41 AM > To: dev...@li... > Subject: RE: [Devmon] RE: NetApp & DevMon 0.2 >=20 > Yes ill be interested in a copy of that. When I try to use TSWITCH transform on a variable that has been created through the MATH transform it gives an error as its in the form 0.00 which TSWITCH doesn't support.=20 =20 READBBHOSTS does read include files but it doesn't recognise the NET:xxx tag being on and so adds all files with the DEVMON tag including those im monitoring from a different server and just displaying. =20 Second ones not much of a problem as I can manually delete hosts it tries to add (I don't run it as a cron job). The 1st problem has put my dhcp check on hold at the moment. =20 Cheers, =20 Craig Whilding IT Systems Administrator Edward Court=20 Altrincham Business Park=20 Altrincham=20 WA14 5GL=20 Tel: + 44 (0)161 926 1643 email: cra...@me...=20 www.mentor.com <file:///C:\Documents%20and%20Settings\cwhildin\Application%20Data\Micro soft\Signatures\www.mentor.com> =20 =20 |
