I very rarely use the local console (screen/keyboard) for accessing DL. It is much more convenient to access it by ssh, not least because I don't have to be physically in front of the machine. However the one time when I am required to be locally present is when upgrading from one release to the next, because the upgrade script runs before ssh is enabled. So I still need a local console [ or I guess serial console ] available. Is/could it be possible to run the upgrade script through ssh? Then DL would suit truly 'headless' installations requiring only an ethernet connection. Dominic |

Paolo, As a workaround: add 'tun' module loading to '/etc/init.d/boot.local'. Tun devices will be created before firewall rules applying and openvpn will not be unshielded (even for a short period of time). Thanks, do I also need to delete the old configuration manually from the boot partition, cos I guess that's the first place DL will look for config when it boots? And I guess this might not be so easy because the boot partition is normally mounted read-only? So remount rw, delete old-config, remount ro... Sorry Heiko, I wrote wrong. OpenVPN starts after Firewall, so in my experience Firewall doesn't find tun0 interface up and stop to load its rules. So i changed the symlink in rc3 and rc5 to change the starting order. I changed KXXFirewall in K99Firewall and SXXFirewall in S99Firewall in both directories and now it's ok. is it only my problem ? Hey, I just checked my config and openvpn is loaded after the firewall. Don't use any of the old scripts from /etc/init.d , except the firewall.rules and boot.local. lsmod moved to /bin . Hey, save-config has a few options, call it with -h to get the details. In your case you want to use -d /dev/xyz to save it on a different device. Yes it is better to keep the boot partition separate from the config one. With DL 1.4[RC6], if I have had configuration media saved on the boot partition (of USB drive), and I now want to move it to another media or partition, how can I do that? I guess storing configuration on boot partition is poor practice because if you want to update configuration then boot partition has to be writeable? Dominic |

Excellent work. So in /etc/init.d/beep, this line should work: if grep -iq ttyS /proc/cmdline; then in place of: if [ "`tty`" = "/dev/console" ]; then ... and the alternative beeps should be heard only when a serial console is actually attached. If you could confirm then I think we have it nailed down (at last). From our 'non-serial box': # cat /proc/cmdline initrd=initrd.gz vga=773 BOOT_IMAGE=vmlinuz But does /proc/cmdline show if serial console is enabled rather than whether it is actually attached? I'm migrating from 1.2; while the system loads old firewall rules , it doesn't find /usr/lsmod. Another question: which files of the old configuration do i have to copy in new configuration compliant with 1.4RC6. I also noted that when openvpn is enabled, it is loaded before firewall and the firewall goes in error because it doesn't find tun0 interface, so i have to change symlink in rc3 and rc5. I also think that using inittab is not the best way to do that. Having the serial console enabled in inittab does not mean that the DL in "serial mode". Yes I was hoping 'mailing dl2' might try it. There may be a better way to detect a serial console, if someone can suggest it. I chose this because it is the way used in install-on-usb (e.g. line 492), so it seemed likely to work. Actually I disabled the new beep feature for RC6, because I wanted to not delay it any further. The "normal" (old) beep still works with RC6, right? I don't do serial mode, somebody else would have to test that. Isn't there a better way than grep'ing the inittab to detect a serial console? Heiko found a problem that the new beeps were being called for all machines at boot time, not just those using serial. So please can I ask you, as a serial user, to test the fix by downloading the latest script in Mantis https://sourceforge.net/apps/mantisbt/devil-linux/view.php?id=90 and trying it. The only practical difference is that the line if [ "`tty`" = "/dev/console" ]; then is replaced with if grep "^S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty" /etc/inittab>/dev/null; then Dominic On 06/10/2010 12:52, mailing dl2 wrote: > Hello, > > In the 1.4rc6 the new lines a commented in the /etc/init.d/beep scripts. > > So it does not work "out of the box". > > If you uncomment them it works. > > Thanks for the modifications. >> I added it to CVS. >> I didn't get a chance to validate it myself yet, so I hope this works. ;-) >> Heiko |
