This email is to inform you of release '1.5.21' of 'syslog-ng' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/syslog-ng/ The changes in this release are as follows: A security hole was fixed. Project description: syslog-ng, as the name shows, is a syslogd replacement, but with new functionality for the new generation. The original syslogd allows messages only to be sorted based on priority/facility pairs; syslog-ng adds the possibility to filter based on message contents using regular expressions. The new configuration scheme is intuitive and powerful. Forwarding logs over TCP and remembering all forwarding hops makes it ideal for firewalled environments. If you would like to cancel subscription to releases of this project, login to freshmeat.net and choose 'home' from the personal menubar at the top of the page. You'll be presented with a list of projects you're subscribed to in the right column, which you may cancel by highlighting the project in question and clicking the 'delete' button. Sincerely, freshmeat.net |

Hi this small thread on the CDRECORD mailing list shows how to burn ext2 files
systems right to CD, rather than having to go thru the process of writing a
tarfile and reading it.

This email is to inform you of release '1.11a36' of 'cdrecord' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/cdrecord/ The changes in this release are as follows: In this release, config.sub now supports ia64, there are libscg fixes for VMS, Solaris, and Linux, you can once again compile without FIFO and libedc. There is a workaround for the read buffer capacity on drives with broken firmware, there is a temporary feature, -v, for cdda3wav, and there is support for HFS volumes > 5 GB. Project description: Cdrecord creates home-burned CDs with a CD-R/CD-RW recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. Cdrecord supports CD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc and ATAPI/mmc compliant drives should also work. Supported features include IDE/ATAPI, parallel-port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CD-RWs (rewritable), TAO, DAO and human-readable error messages. Cdrecord includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD-writers. If you would like to cancel subscription to releases of this project, login to freshmeat.net and choose 'home' from the personal menubar at the top of the page. This email is to inform you of release '2.6.3' of 'mcrypt' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/mcrypt/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release adds large file support. Project description: mcrypt is a program for encrypting files or streams. It is intended to be a replacement for the old UNIX crypt. It uses well-known and well-tested algorithms like BLOWFISH, AES, ARCFOUR, CAST-128, and more in several modes of operation. It also has a compatibility mode with the old UNIX crypt program and the des program found in Solaris. This email is to inform you of release '378' of 'Less' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/less/ The changes in this release are as follows: The default buffer space is now 64K as documented. Search highlighting works properly when used with -R. Some compiler warnings were cleaned up. Project description: Less is a program similar to more, i.e. a terminal based program for viewing text files and the output from other programs. Less offers many features beyond those that more does. For instance, it allows backward movement in the files as well as forward. This email is to inform you of release '1.1.11' of 'GNU nano' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/nano/ The changes in this release are as follows: The changes include a new version of gettext, a new and improved syntax highlighting engine, and updates for the nanorc.sample file. The toggles for case sensitivity (Meta-C) and regex search (Meta-R) have changed, multibuffer status is now displayed and can be toggled from the insert file menu, and some wrapping behavior that changed in 1.1.10 was reverted. Also included are fixes for various memory leaks, the operating directory option, username tab completion, the page_up and down arrow, go to previous word and next word, nanorc parser, and line wrapping code. Project description: GNU nano (Nano's ANOther editor, or Not ANOther editor) is an enhanced clone of the Pico text editor. This email is to inform you of release '1.11a35' of 'cdrecord' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/cdrecord/ The changes in this release are as follows: In this release, cdrecord -prcap now uses the same output format for MMC and MMC-3 drives. cdrecord now tries to handle drives that don't support speed=1 and previously failed with cdrecord speed=1. The new option -immes sets the SCSI "Immed" flag for some commands and this way frees the IDE bus for long lasting commands. -force will no longer remove any RAW speed restriction but only reduce reserve fom 2 to 1. There is a new environment variable, "CDR_FORCERAWSPEED". cdda2wav now also supports speed= like cdrecord for better compatibility. mkisofs HFS code now handles uo to 4 GB. Project description: Cdrecord creates home-burned CDs with a CD-R/CD-RW recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. Cdrecord supports CD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc and ATAPI/mmc compliant drives should also work. I have been meaning to offer. I have cable modem, and a linux server... for the time being, I update my website w/ my DHCP supplied address http://www.thinman.com everytime I reboot. Sometime soon I will be getting back my "router" from Siemans so my network will be back in shape and a array of servers can be available. I will also be getting a Dynamic DHCP account from http://dyndns.org . Also the linux society has a box, http://209.61.182.150 . The man w/ the root password has been delaying giving it to me. I will have to take care of that. If you want the user password for this box I can give it to you encrypted, or over the phone. If either of these options interest you, please let me know. The plus of my network is that its mine. The linux society server is in Rackspace in Texas and I am not sure how flexible they will be. But since the support us... maybe they will be interested in DL as a sponsorship. In fact... (thinking, thinking) this may be an opportunity to create reduncancy against the day that SF stops being so generous. ==== About uClibc, there is a little method to the madness. ==== I am thinking of a distro system that uses BusyBox as the Initrd where the Initrd is the basis of the whole system and includes the OS, SSH and OS related packages, and IPTABLES as the kernel default. The server packages, however, would almost be considered value-added products, coming from the tradiional linux sources, even possibly proprietary vendors. Keeping the inital distro tiny gives it the flexibility to go anywhere (like bad girls do ;) ) -- including my favorite target, the cell phone. Also let me add, that I am enrolling in an interdisiplinary college to finish my degree and the linux society management will be my focus. eLSD is of course DL warmed over. This email is to inform you of release '10.0' of 'nail' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/nail/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release adds support for the features of the POSIX.2 mailx command and most System V extensions. Some of the changes render it incompatible to previous nail versions, so read the ChangeLog carefully when upgrading. Project description: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail 8.1 and contains builtin support for MIME messages (it can handle international character sets as well as attachments). It also contains some minor enhancements like the ability to set a From: Address. Nail offers its full command set both for interactive and batch use, and is especially useful for sending attachments from scripts or for reading mail via slow connections and on bad terminals. In recent system environments, nail is Unicode/UTF-8 capable. The shell access exists, but SF is stingy about disk space. I used it once to store some packages using SSH for transport and then thought better of it. On the topic of glibc, has anyone given thought to uClibc ?? It is the official compiler of the embedded linux market and many apps are being ported to it. It is second cousin to BusyBox and is owned by the same person. On my Pentium 4 mobile 1.8 GHz it took about 30 minutes to compile and install the glibc. -- cu Heiko We are Penguin, Resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hey guys, I just added the compilation of glibc plus the current Debian patches for it to the build system. I hope you don't have a slow compilation machine, otherwise it could take a couple of hours. ;-) This was necessary in order to get an up to date version of glibc and to add support for compiling for different CPUs. -- cu Heiko We are Penguin, Resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hey, does anybody know a good place to download glibc patches? I was searching on the web for a while, but just found links which pointed to non existing locations. -- cu Heiko We are Penguin, Resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |

This email is to inform you of release '2.3.9' of 'xinetd' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/xinetd/ The changes in this release are as follows: Bugs in the parser were fixed. Service names can now be used rather than port numbers. Problems in access controls were fixed. Time service output is now in network byte order. tcpmux was updated. A race which occurred if only 1 wait service was specified was fixed. Project description: xinetd is a replacement for inetd, the internet services daemon. Anybody can use it to start servers that don't require privileged ports because xinetd does not require that the services in its configuration file be listed in /etc/services. It can do access control on all services based on the address of the remote host, time of access, connection attempts, or process limits. Access control works on all services, whether multi-threaded or single-threaded and for both the TCP and UDP protocols. xinetd supports both internal access control, and the use of the libwrap library. IPv6 with access control is also supported. It can redirect service requests to other machines, and has the standard built in services, including tcpmux.
