I honestly think we are approaching the day where we can run the entire basic DL OS from Intird, but I think Initrd will have to become InitVFS, because with RAM disk you have to specify size in the kernel and once set.. you dont get anymore. I personally see a vast number of threads starting here !! Even/odd versioning, Compile farms, Mosix, Remote config... I also see a few over looked quandrys, for instace, how can you use the DHCP in Initrd unless the ethernet is loaded first. That will require auto-configuration which is bulky unless you write your own. Somehow I feel that the best course for DL is to get it completely modular so that users can concentrate on individual tasks and requirements and easily switch them in and out. Also, all the component parts of DL, such as the compile farm build should be available as modules. I am getting my portal software today, supposedly, but I definately want to get my DL/eLSD build kit for the new uClibc compile file system image. I hope that helps with the low level stuff. Outside the chroot jail the cluster works now, inside the chroot not yet. That's already further then I got before! Hey, I did more tests with distcc over the last few days and it's not working for us yet. With using the available masquerade patch it works much better but still messes up some compiles. Let's see what to future brings. I'll also do another test with (Open-)Mosix, I found a mistake I did last time. Hi, ok here's a proposal: We use the same versioning scheme as the kernel folks: even numbers for stable and uneven for unstable/development versions. The next release will be 0.6.0 and every 1-3 month we will release a new version which just includes bugfixes and updates (0.6.1, 0.6.2, etc.). Parallel we start with 0.7.0 which is our development version. -- Regards Heiko We are Penguin, resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hi all,
I'm quite new on this ML, but not so much as a user (i've got 4 DL boxes
running for more than a year, a 5th will be installed next week) so i
consider 2 things :
* for a security goal distro, it's not good to wait months until
releasing a new version if there are important security holes in
essential pakages such as ssl, ssh, freeswan ... maybe apache could wait
a little more ( i don't want to make a troll, sorry if apache is a bad
exemple for you).
* on the other hand, it's not a good thing to hurry making a new
release (of the devel branch) because there are some important security
holes , having more risks to have a disfunction in something important
(i remember pbs i had with cron, due to use of grsec patches ... on
0.6b1 iso)
In other words, every reliable distro make updates for 2 branches : the
stable and the devel in order to dissociate those 2 aspects. I
understand you're not SuSE ! but what about the credibility of your
distro if you begin to miss one of your goals ? Or maybe your next
target is having best a more general lightweight than robust distro ;-)
(Please, don't be offended by my words, criticize you all is the last
thing i have in mind ... i barely speak english)
I mean i'd preffer having a monthly or so DL 5.x with updated security
only packages, which i could burn, put in the cd drive of my boxes,
reboot and be quiet
and same rythm for new functionnalities as thoses DL Boxes don't need to
every morning.
I think someone really needing something not in the distro should
download the devel environment and spend some time on it and contibute!
I think Heiko (and/or other good developpers) is better to work on grsec
patches , or libs for fwbuilder than on integration of webmin (from my
point of view only ...) as He is competent on such serious job; let
others less experienced (like me) work on less important things .
As Friedrich, i'm questionning about where you want to go.
Best Regards

Ok :)
"dont change a hair for me, not if you care for me"
From "my funny valentine"
-- billie holiday version is best :)
I have only looked at webmin a little, but it seems to be built around command
line linux, wrapped up in perl for the web. It has a very busy mailing list.
I get the impression they would embrace DL, though I didnt ask.
Keeping things simple and modular makes sense, automating later through webmin
or another web server. It would be nice to do everything from the build to the
kernel compile all custom on some donated server. Or the webserver could be
in-house, on the users support box.

Or you could call it evolution.

That's true. We would need to count more on the people on the mailinglist.

I understand your concerns.
I have some ideas about automating more things and due to that freeing
up more time for us:
- pre-defined configuration profiles:
make config router
make config all
- dedicated compile host which does nothing else then compiling all the
different profiles and sending emails when there's a problem.
- automatic download of newer release of the used sources

Yeah, speak up guys ! ;-)

More frequent releases would be great to keep up with new s/w versions and security patches. Where can v0.6 be downloaded from? Cheers, Steve Flynn sf...@tp... |

I think that you are somehow in the same position as Linus Torvalds. The kernel development is also too long because of the featurism,... But I think good things do take a while and throwing out releases too often makes it moving a little too fast. When you'll be releasing 0.6 a lot of people have to learn how to use the new features, which will take it's time. And a release also will take more time from us to do the mailinglist support. For me it looks as if we are getting too broad as from where we started. Devil-Linux nowadays does lot's more than just simple firewalls. I know this is cool, but can we manage it in the future? Hey, I was thinking about releasing 0.6 soon and change the release policy. At the moment we collect a lot of changes and then release a new version after a very long time. We could go ahead and release a new version i.e. every 1-3 month. What do you guys think about it? -- Regards Heiko We are Penguin, resistance is futile! http://www.devil-linux.org |
