Hello, I am at my wits end on this one...all I need is a little bit of help. I am unable to make kernel source changes and then proceed to "make = build , install, prepare, iso". Very Specifically: After a minor kernel change, "make build" stops and prompts me for = approval on certain kernel compilation parameneters. What it is actually doing, is within the kernel subdir = (tmp/linux-2.4.22) running "make oldconfig". After that it is a nightmare. kernel compilation craps out, and nothing = short of a complete cleaning of ALL the src files and recompilation = (about 20hours in my 1Gig Athlon) cures the problem. I do not know what packages touch the .config for the kernel. I know that grsecurity touches I have attempted to selective delete = .done_build_grsecurity and .done_build_gcc but the kernel still = complains of invalid references. Please, could somebody tell me: If I want to recompile JUST THE KERNEL, what steps must I take? (.done_ files to erase, etc) I am sure that it has been covered in previous postings, but I was = unable to find it. Thank you for your time. Peter Frischknecht |

This email is to inform you about the release of version '1.0.0-pre4' of 'BusyBox' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/busybox/ The changes in this release are as follows: A major rework of sed was done. A new, tiny bunzip2 implementation was created. Support was added for 2.6.x kernel modules. Many other sundry cleanups and bugfixes were made. Project description: BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a single small executable. It provides minimalist replacements for most of the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc. The utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts. BusyBox provides a fairly complete POSIX environment for any small or embedded system. This email is to inform you about the release of version '1.21' of 'Linux-VServer' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/vserver/ The changes in this release are as follows: A small bug in tcp_ipv4_addr_conflict(), which prevented NFS fcntl locking, and probably caused other unexpected behavior, was fixed. Project description: Linux-VServer allows you to create virtual private servers and security contexts which operate like a normal Linux server, but allow many independent servers to be run simultaneously in one box at full speed. All services, such as ssh, mail, Web, and databases, can be started on such a VPS, without modification, just like on any real server. This email is to inform you about the release of version '2.01a20' of 'cdrtools' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/cdrecord/ The changes in this release are as follows: Support for DOS/DJGPP was added. The Win32 libscg low level interface was fixed. Some fixes were made for 64-bit architectures for NULL-terninated varargs function calls. A bug that caused cdrecord to core dump with microsopic FIFO size parameters was fixed. Workarounds were made for firmware bugs found in the Plextor 708. Project description: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs with a CDR/CDRW recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. It supports CD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc- and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features include IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD writers. One major difference is the use of a method called OE (Opportunistic Encryption), which they are promoting heavily, as a method of automagically encrypting all traffic between 2 Linux boxes without prearrangement. To me, the jury is still out on whether this will actually be adopted by any other vendors, but I may be wrong. I'm also unsure of the state of the ALG patches, NAT traversal, X509 certs, etc in the official 2 release. On the otherhand, I have worked quite extensively with SuperFreeS/WAN, and so I would recommend this be the route to follow. It has all the patches currently in DL now as well as a few others. The DL ipsec patchset is also currently a patch or 2 behind. It looks like SuperFreeS/WAN is also working on a V2 version, but haven't quite got the official release there yet. Martin |

BTW, you really don't have to create a patch for _new_ files as far as us developers are concerned. You can just send us the file. - BS |

I didn't see this error before, but I'm also not using FreeS/WAN. Just turn off ALG for now. ;-) BUT I just did a few full compiles this week and it compiled fine, no aborts. Did you modify anything ? We have anyway the following task outstanding: either move to SuperFreeS/WAN ( http://www.freeswan.ca ) or to FreeS/WAN 2.0x When I asked last time, nobody answered which one is prefered. This email is to inform you about the release of version '2.61' of 'SpamAssassin' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/spamassassin/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release adds dramatically reduced memory usage of the Bayes expiry, avoidance of false positives on Outlook 2003 messages, messages from Mac, Palm, and localized versions of Eudora, several AOL MUAs, and newer versions of The Bat!, a new set of French translations, an update to reflect a new Dynablock DNSBL location, a fix for a possible hole that was giving AWL bonuses to spammer forgeries on some networks, and miscellaneous bugfixes. Project description: SpamAssassin is a mail filter that uses a wide range of heuristic tests on mail headers and body text to identify spam. Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as spam for later filtering. It provides a command line tool to perform filtering, a client-server system to filter large volumes of mail, and Mail::SpamAssassin, a set of Perl modules that implement a Mail::Audit plugin -- allowing SpamAssassin to be used in a Mail::Audit filter, a spam-protection proxy POP/IMAP server, or almost anywhere. I think I tried all options and all it told me was which files had been added, but not what had been added in the files (ie, the whole file). Doing it on an already existing file and it works great. I'm trying to create a patchfile for a new package. Martin Martin |

Hi I'm using the latest version from CVS and it looks like Freeswan is failing to compile correctly - specifically, SHA2 from the ALG patches, which has a cascade effect and causes pluto to fail compilation. These failures do not appear to be picked up during the build or install process. I'm using freeswan with all the extra patches Is anyone else seeing this? You can check by seeing if /usr/lib/ipsec contains the pluto and whack executables. Doing a manual compilation I get the following failure... root:/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99# make programs make[1]: Entering directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/libdes' make[1]: Nothing to be done for `programs'. make[1]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/libdes' make[1]: Entering directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/lib' make[1]: Nothing to be done for `programs'. make[1]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/lib' make[1]: Entering directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/pluto' make -C alg libalg.o make[2]: Entering directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/pluto/alg' make -C ../../libcrypto/libsha2 libsha2.a make[3]: Entering directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/libcrypto/libsha2' cc -O3 -omit-frame-pointer -I../include -c -o hmac_sha2.o hmac_sha2.c cc1: error: unrecognized option `-strip' cc1: error: output filename specified twice make[3]: *** [hmac_sha2.o] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/libcrypto/libsha2' make[2]: *** [../../libcrypto/libsha2/libsha2.a] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/pluto/alg' make[1]: *** [alg/libalg.o] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/build/tmp/freeswan-1.99/pluto' Being the non-programmer that I am, I'm not sure what is causing this error - looks like the strip option, but I'm unsure where this is coming from... Any help / ideas appreciated. Thanks Martin |

> >... or can I do a cvs diff somehow? > > Never used cvs diff.... You should check it out, it's a VERY useful command. You can just "cvs diff file" and it will 'diff' the file on your hard disk against the latest CVS version of the file to see what you've changed. You can also diff your local file against a different CVS version with the "-r" parameter. "cvs diff -r 1.21 file" You can even diff two different CVS versions by specifying "-r" twice. "cvs diff -r 1.12 -r 1.13 file" Comes in very handy! I use it a lot! - BS |
