I never noticed such behavior. Did you check the Caldav past events 
DavMail setting ?
You should either leave this setting empty for no limit or to the 
default 90 days.

However, this looks very much like an iCal issue, you could try to 
create a gmail Caldav
calendar in iCal to check this.
