Hi.
It seems impossible to change the STATUS of an event from anything to CANCELLED, and from CANCELLED to anything with office 365.
I use davmail v4.8.2 with thunderbird 52.5.0, lightning 5.4.5 and office 365.
I refined the issue.
It is possible to cancel an occurence of a repeating event but it is impossible to cancel all the occurences of a repeating event.
It is also impossible to cancel a one-time event.
It may be a normal behaviour with office 365. I don't have enough knowledge of it to guarantee that this behaviour is the one wanted.

Confirmed: you can't set event status to CANCELLED in Exchange, this status does not exist. However you can delete an occurrence of a repeating event, or delete the event completely. I recently changed delete implementation to send notifications to attendees in this case.
No way to implement a feature that does not exist on Exchange
