Carl, I haven't look into these images, but usually, at least an ISO image, you can mount with a loop device on linux. If this works for these images also, maybe you don't need the sdcard? This isn't exactly a clonezilla thng, but maybe it can help. these images go on to an SD card: https://cberner.com/share/ [image: [ ]] ubuntu-server-14.04-v4.4-rc6-mfc.img.xz <https://cberner.com/share/ubuntu-server-14.04-v4.4-rc6-mfc.img.xz> 2016-05-01 17:12 222M uncompressed that turns into a 8gig file even though it is a 128M and 550M partition. I am guessing it was put onto an 8 gig media and dd the whole thing. There are many images like this. Is there some way to trim that file so that when I write it to the SD card I am not writing all the extra 0's? And then once it is written, how to I resize the partition to fit the media? -- Carl K |

Hi Steven, two more questions :-) - What do you mean with "Actually ext2/3/4, or btrfs is also working"? UEFI detects also these partition types? Or could be used like I do, UEFI boot partition on USB HDD NTFS, partimag partition e.g. EXT4? - Could it be that Clonezilla changes the partition table "mode" from MBR or whatever it is called to "GPT-based"? I've made an Clonzilla disk image of the SSD in my OpenSuse box. Because of the limited delete and write operations on a SSD I've made the restore test on a second USB HDD, which was empty for the test. Everything went fine, Clonezilla gave the warning that the restore was made to different devices and that maybe the fstab etc. must be changed after restore. But first recognized after the Clonezilla restore test my (OpenSuse's) fdisk command suddenly uses GPT. So all my EXT4 formatted "Linux" type partitions are now shown as partition type "Microsoft Basic Data", partition type "linux" (83), "linux swap" (82) and also "HPFS/NTFS" (7) are not offered anymore Regards, Michael Am 21.06.2016 um 14:11 schrieb Steven Shiau: > Hi Michael, > OK, cool. Hi Michael, OK, cool. It's nice to know now Clonezilla works for you. I have updated the website, not only FAT, but also NTFS will work for the live USB with syslinux. Actually ext2/3/4, or btrfs is also working, but FAT and NTFS works for both GNU/Linux and MS Windows, so I just list these two file systems. Hi Steven, first of all thanks for your fast answer! My machine's bios only allows uefi )only) OR legacy (only), no mixed mode. And I'm using uefi (only) "normal" mode, not secure boot. Your recommendation for just one partition sound comprehensible, bot not suitable for my requirements: I'm currently affected by a bug, not sure if Linux in general or OpenSuse specific, which leads to kernel crashes when accessing USB devices, up to now unknown why and when. But unfortunately very often when accessing my usb hdd used for backups. This disk was an ntfs formatted drive until today, and every kernel crash leads always (100%) to a corrupted ntfs volume, only fixable by mswin based "chkdsk". And my only access to mswin and "chkdsk" is an old XP box with only USB 2.0 - takes hours every time.... Yesterday I've shrinked the mentioned ntfs backup drive to be able to add a second partition, 250 mb FAT16 formatted, for Clonezilla. You've said ONE (ntfs) partition would be enough, but I didn't know this before. All docs I've found at first are saying uefi is able to handle FAT only, and even the Clonezilla Live pages are only talking about FAT. But I've just checked with an usb stick, freshly formatted with ntfs and Clonezilla Live on it - works fine on my machine. AND good news: My initial Clonezilla problem is *** SOLVED *** Because I've again had a kernel crash during a "Back in Time" (online ) backup, and again a corrupted NTFS drive, I recovered it for a last time, copied everything on another drive, and dropped all partitions on the backup drive. After that, I've created a FIRST partition, 250 mb FAT16 formatted, with Clonezilla Live on it (my originally downloaded clonezilla-live-2.4.6-25-amd64.zip, Debian based). Plus another SECOND partition, ext4 file system on it, for all future Clonezille backups. Never had problems to recover EXT4 after a crash..... And with this, Clonezilla on the FIRST partition of the usb hdd, NOT on the SECOND partition as before, Clonezilla is booting correctly and everything works fine now!!!! Btw bloody cool software, Clonezilla! I love the straightforward mixture of menus and command line, looking forward for my first test of a restore (will keep a "dd" live copy until this test succeeds ;-)) Again: Thank you very much, Michael Am 19.06.2016 um 12:46 schrieb Steven Shiau: > The following is for booting USB flash drive on uEFI machine. The following is for booting USB flash drive on uEFI machine. First make sure you only alow uEFI booting in your BIOS settings, not allowing legacy BIOS to boot. This would make thing easier. Second, if you enable secure boot in your BIOS settings, please use Ubuntu-based Clonezilla live, like 20160529-xenal amd64 version: http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php It's recommended to use only one partition in your USB flash drive, format it with FAT32 or NTFS partition, then just unzip the clonezilla-live-20160529-xenial-amd64.zip on your USB flash drive. That's all. The doc on Clonezilla website is for booting USB flash drive both on legacy BIOS and uEFI. If you just want to boot your USB flash on uEFI machine, it's as easy as the above. In Clonezilla live, there is a sample script file called: "/usr/share/drbl/samples/gen-rec-usb" It can let you create a recovery USB flash drive directly from the machine by Clonezilla live. There is no need to have an image as an intermediate if you use that. Check its content and you can see some description in the file's header. Sorry for the delay, I was set on digest and only saw your answers now. I’ll try to make it clearer. Let’s say I have a partition to backup, used 20GB on 32GB. I have a USB key of 32GB. If I make a clone, I will use ~20GB on my USB key with an image. Then I want to make a restauration disk. Then, clonezilla will try to copy some files from the live system + the images to make a zip file. The thing is I don’t have enough space, in fact, it’s not necessary if CZ doesn’t try to copy AND zip. It could either copy the live system files, make a symlink (or not) and stop the process (without trying to zip it). Because in that particular situation, I don’t see the point. I’ve just made a backup, it’s not necessary to make a zip of the backup. -- Cordialement, Adnan RIHAN GPG: 5675-62BA (https://keybase.io/max13/key.asc) ⇒ If you are not using GPG/PGP but want to send me an encrypted e-mail: https://encrypt.to/0x567562BA. |

I don't get the question either. Zipping the backup compresses it to save disk space. In a space constrained environment, why would you want to make a non compressed image? Hello there ! I’m occasionally using Clonezilla, which is amazing ! But when I want to make a restauration disk, I can only make a ZIP or an ISO. The thing is with a backup of 10GB on a space limited drive, it’s hard to store the backup AND make a restauration disk zip/iso as it also requires 10GB. Would it be possible to make a restauration disk, but without zipping it? I could store it on the same drive as the backups. Thank you ! -- Regards, Adnan RIHAN |

This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.5-23) includes minor enhancements and bug fixes. ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Feb/10). * Linux kernel was updated to 4.3.5-1. From Linux kernel v4, the default union file system has been changed to overlay, therefore if you edit boot parameter manually, you have to use "union=overlay". No more using "union=aufs". Due to the linux kernel change in Debian repository, no more i586 linux kernel, so now Debian-based Clonezilla live is only released with 3 architectures: i686, i686-pae and amd64. BUG FIXES * Failed to set keyboard layout due to console-common was removed. Thanks to Matthew M for reporting this. **** This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.5-20) includes major enhancements and bug fixes. **** *** ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES *** * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Feb/03). * Linux kernel was updated to 4.3.3-7. * Partclone was updated to 0.2.87-drbl2. A fat16 issue was fixed. Thanks to Åukasz Stefanowicz for reporting this. (http://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/237/) * New file system nilfs2 is supported in this release. * Now ocs-onthefly supports nvme device cloning, and can work for different types of disk cloning, e.g. nvme0n1 -> sda or vice versa. * Make ocs-install-grub run when it's a GPT disk with a special "bios_boot" partition exists in the machine using legacy BIOS. * By default the image integrity will be checked before restoring. The option "-scr" can be used to skip this checking. Thanks to Nabi OUMAROV (contact _at_ nabioumarov com) for the feedback. * The option "-sc" was replaced by "-scs" in drbl-ocs and ocs-sr. This will be easier to tell the differences between saving and restoring image. Option "-sc" is still working in the same way with "-scs", but might be dropped in the future. * Packages fatresize, nilfs-tools and fancontrol were added. * Add removing swapfile.sys in ocs-rm-win-swap-hib. Thanks to Bartosz BÄ torek batorek _at_ gmail com> for suggesting this. *** BUG FIXES *** * The size with more than one partition not expanding should be added to the later partition in ocs-expand-gpt-pt. * "Shoutdown" should be "Desligar" in luanguage file pt_BR. Thanks to Luciano (lboni2 _at_ yahoo com br) for correcting this. * Use parted to fill the last partitition to the end of disk because there might be some resudial in the calculation of ocs-expand-gpt-pt. Thanks to Conan for this suggestion. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/c5e92d87/?limit=25#080c * Avoiding TUI messages overriding the error messages in ocs-live-restore. Normally it's not directly related to the machine you want to restore. The key is, the restored OS has to support your hardware. With that, you can boot the OS on the different machine after the image is restored. For MS Windows, you'd better to install sysprep before you take an image if you want to restore the image to different hardware. Jarno: AFAIK, those files are convenience items at best. The image you created is of the original disk, and will restore to another disk that is prepared for that notebook computer. Clonezilla does not (cannot) use the info-lspci.txt to configure anything. When the image is restored to a target disk, the drivers and devices are restored, and then discovered during the normal boot process, and so even if the contents of info-lspci.txt did not match the target system, you'd still be able to restore the disk. In my experience, you can restore one notebook computer's image to another notebook computer - even if the devices and motherboards don't match - because the data is restored, and Linux "configures itself" on boot. Hello. I successfully load Clonezilla Live from network using iPXE: #!ixpe initrd initrd.img chain vmlinuz boot=live ... fetch=http://server/filesystem.squashfs Now I have a question. How to pre-download filesystem.squashfs with iPXE and pass it to clonezilla? Like: initrd initrd.img initrd filesystem.squashfs chain vmlinuz boot=live .... I would like iPXE load all files, so clonezilla live will boot withput requesting any file from server. Thank you. |

This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.2-61) includes major enhancements and bug fixes. *** ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES *** * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2015/Oct/12). * Linux kernel was updated to 4.2.3-1. From Linux kernel v4, the default union file system has been changed to overlay, therefore if you edit boot parameter manually, you have to use "union=overlay". No more using "union=aufs". * Partclone was updated to 0.2.83-drbl1. An xfs issue was fixed. * Package util-linux was updated to 2.27-3. * Not only eno*, but also other NIC name like enp* will be searched in ocs-live-netcfg. * Package zerofree was added. * Proportition GPT partition layout could be created by the option "-k1". * Language file zh_CN was updated. Thanks to Zhiqiang Zhang. *** BUG FIXES *** * Option "-C" failed to pass to partclone in ocs-onthefly when option "-icds" is used for GPT disk. * When multiple disks contain grub root partition, ocs-install-grub detected the root partition outside the restored ones. * Autlogin failed when PXE booting clonezilla live without username in the boot parameters. * Updating EFI NVRAM only when restoring disk. Thanks to pedro sencha for reporting this issue. That's true. If the partition layout is too complicated, the option "-k" wont' work. You can manually create the partition layout on the destination disk first then when restoring or cloning, choose option "-k" to skip the partition layout creation by Clonezilla. Of course, still check the "-r". Hi all, I have a setup with a MBR partition layout and a smaller source and a larger target disk. During restore I have set the -k1 and the -r option but the partitions are not resized to the full size of the target disk. I am using the trusty alternative version. Greets Marcus |

This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.2-32) includes major enhancements and bug fixes. **** *** ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES *** - The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2015/Aug/05). - Linux kernel was updated to 4.1.3-1. From Linux kernel v4, the default union file system has been changed to overlay, therefore if you edit boot parameter manually, you have to use "union=overlay". No more using "union=aufs". - Partclone was updated to 0.2.81-drbl2. Now it supports VMFS partition >= 256 GB. A TUI crash issue for vmfs was fixed. Updated xfs and e2fs libs were used. - Enabled vmfs3 and vmfs5 support since partclone has solved the issue. - Live-boot was updated to 4.0.2-1.drbl4. Parameter nicif was added back. - Program sfdisk (>=2.26) is used as the default program to create GPT partition. Program sgdisk is the backup plan. - A better mechanism was added to get the linking status of network card in ocs-live-netcfg. - When /home/partimag is a mount point, prep-ocsroot should use "skip" as the default item. Thanks to Bruce Solomon [rufovillosum _at_ yahoo com]. - NVME device is supported. *** BUG FIXES *** - The "Unable to find target partition" issue in GPT disk has been fixed. - When the image saved from sda, for example, was restored to sdb, the swap parttion was not restored correctly. - Option "-k1" failed due to ocs-expand-mbr-pt failed to read the output of sfdisk >= 2.26. - The output file of update-efi-nvram-boot-entry failed to assign the correct variables. - Efibootmgr >= 0.12 has newer output format. Thanks to johnv-valve for reporting this (https://github.com/stevenshiau/clonezilla/issues/9). - Failed to process LVM about PV on multiple partitions and LV with snapshots. Thanks to SLLabs Louis and Shaun Rowland for providing the patches.
