Hi all! I'm using Clonezilla for years now for my own OpenSuse box. Created a bootable USB 3.0 HDD for this. One small FAT boot partition for Clonezilla. Another large EXT4 partition for Clonezilla images and other backups (rsnapshot and BackInTime) Tried the same layout for an older laptop (Acer Aspire 7200G) with separate USB HDD, but the Clonezilla Live images (both) are not recognized as bootable by the Acer Aspire. I'm convinced that this has nothing to do with Clonezilla itself, but the laptop. I believe it has something to do that the Clonezilla images are using UEFI boot, which probably the old laptop couldn't do. So I'm asking for hints how get an USB HDD bootable the "legacy" way with/for Clonezilla Live. Thanks in Advance, Michael |

I hope it works. Trying it on monday on this production server. If that fails, then I need to try classic rsync method.. Sorry, I can't as stopped process already. Failed partition was using lvm+xfs on centos 7. Trying to use bit by bit copy from advanced settings. What were the error messages? Please take photos about those error messages then post them. It's easier for us to understand where went wrong there. *This release of Clonezilla live (2.5.2-17) includes major enhancements and bug fixes. ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES* * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2017/Jul/26). * Linux kernel was updated to 4.11.6-1. * Partclone was updated to 0.2.91. * Language file de_DE, es_ES, fr_FR, hu_HU, it_IT, ja_JP, sk_SK, and tr_TR were updated. Thanks to Michael Vinzenz, Juan Ramón Martínez, Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Greg Marki, Gianfranco Gentili, Akira Yoshiyama, Ondrej Dzivy Balucha, and Volkan Gezer. * Add SMB version selection when mounting CIFS. Thanks to Eric Nichols for asking this. * Add packages brltty and espeakup. Thanks to Nick Gawronski for this suggestion. * Add packages sshpass and keychain. * A lite server was added in Clonezilla live. It can be used as Clonezilla server, with limited features, but works for most of the scenarios. Therefore re-arrange the main menu of Clonezilla live as: "device-image", "device-device", "remote-source", "remote-dest", "lite-server", "lite-client". Thanks to Aaron Burling for providing suggestions. * Boot parameter "ocs_litesrv_mode" was added for lite server presetting: use-existing-dhcpd, start-new-dhcpd, auto-detect, no-dhcpd. Thanks to Aaron Burling for providing suggestions. *BUG FIXES* * Detect if terminal supports color output before using color outputs in the terminal. Thanks to TF for asking this. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ec46f3a3/ * When creating partition table on a disk, Clonezilla should wait for partition name with extra p, like nvme0n1p1, to take effect. Thanks Bruno Vila Vilariño for reporting this issue. * Failed to use the serial number with space. Thanks to Matt Broadstone for providing the patch. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/266/ * Package whiptail was updated which improves handling of long strings in menu. I'm using clonezilla-live-2.5.0-25-amd64 I pxe boot clonzilla. I have one machine that is hooked up to 2 networks. One network is the network I pxe boot clonzilla from the other is a static assigned network. When I boot this particular machine it reaches pxelinux and allows me to choose my clonzilla option. It loads the kernel and initrd from tftp. When it starts to boot from the initrd image it tries to get an ip from eth1 which is on the static network. So I see a long loop of "no response." If I unplug the rj45 from the other card it boots fine. I'd like to pass an option to it to have it use the other card first. live-netdevice="eth0" doen't seem to make a difference. They use that machine often enough I setup another machine in my office to experiment with. I had a 4 port network card lying around and the motherboard has a pxe enabled port. So I plugged the 4 port card in and pluged one interface on the 4 port card into another on the 4 port card to simulated the static assigned network. The 4 port card shows up as eth0-3. The onboard nic shows as eth4 but if I pass live-netdevice="eth4" it still tries eth0 and I see the loop of no response. It looks like it tries eth1 as well but it stops after a number of eth1 tries and gives me a prompt of (initramfs). If I unplug the cord from eth0 and eth1 it boots up just fine. I added the live-netdevice= to the pxelinux.cfg/default file's append lines label Clonezilla-live Stable 2017-02-20 x64 menu label Clonezilla Live 2017-02-20 x64 (Stable) kernel cz170220.x64/live/vmlinuz append initrd=cz170220.x64/live/initrd.img boot=live union=overlay username=user hostname=clonezilla config quiet components noswap edd=on nomodeset nodmraid noeject locales=en_US.UTF-8 k eyboard-layouts=NONE ocs_live _run="ocs-live-general" ocs_live_extra_param="" ocs_live_batch=no vga=788 toram=filesystem.squashfs ip=dhcp net.ifnames=0 splash i915.blacklist=yes radeonhd.blacklist=yes nouveau.blacklist=yes vmwgfx.enable_fbdev=1 ocs_prerun="dhclient && mount -t nfs <nfs_server>:<nfs_mountpoint>" fetch=tftp://<tftp_server>/cz160627.x64/live/filesystem.squashfs label Clonezilla-live Stable 2017-02-20 x64 eth0 option menu label Clonezilla Live 2017-02-20 x64 (Stable) eth0 option kernel cz170220.x64/live/vmlinuz append initrd=cz170220.x64/live/initrd.img boot=live live-netdevice="eth0" union=overlay username=user hostname=clonezilla config quiet components noswap edd=on nomodeset nodmraid noeject locales=en_US.UTF-8 k eyboard-layouts=NONE ocs_live _run="ocs-live-general" ocs_live_extra_param="" ocs_live_batch=no vga=788 toram=filesystem.squashfs ip=dhcp net.ifnames=0 splash i915.blacklist=yes radeonhd.blacklist=yes nouveau.blacklist=yes vmwgfx.enable_fbdev=1 ocs_prerun="dhclient && mount -t nfs <nfs_server>:<nfs_mountpoint>" fetch=tftp://<tftp_server>/cz160627.x64/live/filesystem.squashfs label Clonezilla-live Stable 2017-02-20 x64 eth1 option menu label Clonezilla Live 2017-02-20 x64 (Stable) eth1 option kernel cz170220.x64/live/vmlinuz append initrd=cz170220.x64/live/initrd.img boot=live live-netdevice="eth1" union=overlay username=user hostname=clonezilla config quiet components noswap edd=on nomodeset nodmraid noeject locales=en_US.UTF-8 keyboard-layouts=NONE ocs_live_run="ocs-live-general" ocs_live_extra_param="" ocs_live_batch=no vga=788 toram=filesystem.squashfs ip=dhcp net.ifnames=0 splash i915.blacklist=yes radeonhd.blacklist=yes nouveau.blacklist=yes vmwgfx.enable_fbdev=1 ocs_prerun="dhclient && mount -t nfs <nfs_server>:<nfs_mountpoint>" fetch=tftp://<tftp_server>/cz160627.x64/live/filesystem.squashfs label Clonezilla-live Stable 2017-02-20 x64 eth4 option menu label Clonezilla Live 2017-02-20 x64 (Stable) eth1 option kernel cz170220.x64/live/vmlinuz append initrd=cz170220.x64/live/initrd.img boot=live live-netdevice="eth4" union=overlay username=user hostname=clonezilla config quiet components noswap edd=on nomodeset nodmraid noeject locales=en_US.UTF-8 keyboard-layouts=NONE ocs_live_run="ocs-live-general" ocs_live_extra_param="" ocs_live_batch=no vga=788 toram=filesystem.squashfs ip=dhcp net.ifnames=0 splash i915.blacklist=yes radeonhd.blacklist=yes nouveau.blacklist=yes vmwgfx.enable_fbdev=1 ocs_prerun="dhclient && mount -t nfs <nfs_server>:<nfs_mountpoint>" fetch=tftp://<tftp_server>/cz160627.x64/live/filesystem.squashfs What is going on. why is it ignoring live-netdevice option? |

If you meant "clone", not "image", then actually Clonezilla is not really good at cloning larger disk to smaller one. This is because Clonezilla uses block-based program (Partclone) to clone the file system, not file-based. There is an option to use the option "-k1" in the expert mode for this purpose, however, it's not 100% working. Yes it is possible to make clone of Windows 95-XP and use it in VM (KVM, Hyper-V and VMware). I have a couple of older PCs, one is ancient Windows XP (don't laugh!), that I want to clone and virtualize for posterity. Since they are no longer in their physical systems, I wonder if this is possible with CloneZilla or if I would need to create a disk image differently to attach to a new VM. Thanks. |

Hello, IMHO the easiest way is to resize source disk partition(s) to minimum (using gparted), clone drive with expert option: skip destination drive size and after cloning resize partitions again to match new disk size. Be sure that source disk has proper aligment - first partition should begin @ 1st MiB (1024Bx1024B). Any dividable value by 4096B will be fine. Hi, I have had a few occasions where I want to clone a drive usually a 1tb or 2tb drive from a factory laptop (dell or other brand) to a SSD (256gb or 500gb). I cant quite figure out how to get Clonezilla to resize the unused space on the disk to make it happen. I have used Acronis True Image to do it when needed but I would love to use Clonezilla instead. I have not had any issues cloning a smaller disk to a larger disk & then expanding the space within windows but the other way around doesn't seem to work. Is that something Clonezillla could do? Thanks, Rich |

This release of Clonezilla live (2.4.9-17) includes major enhancements and bug fixes. ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2016/Oct/21). * Linux kernel was updated to 4.7.8-1. * Remove "nodmraid" from boot parameters in drbl-ocs.conf. Now fakeraid/firmware raid is supported. * Language files hu_HU, ja_JP.UTF-8, de_DE, fr_FR, it_IT, and es_ES was updated. Thanks to Greg Marki, Akira YOSHIYAMA, Michael Vinzenz, Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Gianfranco Gentili, Juan Ramón Martínez and Alex Ibáñez López. * The drbl/clonezilla live version info will be put in /etc/ocs/ocs-live.conf, and when an image is saved, the info will be saved in Info-packages.txt. * Applied patches from Aaron Burling, so now when mounting image repository, it is able to browse the directories recursively. * Force to make timeout of dhclient as 60 secs. Debian uses 60, but Ubuntu uses 300. Too long. Thanks to Cecile, Adam (Adam.Cecile /at/ hitec lu) for reporting this. * Add mechanism to detect bitlocker and Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR) in ocs-get-part-info. * Add options -sfsck and -senc in the Clonezilla live interactive menu for saving image modes. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea. * Ask the post action (choose, reboot, poweroff) before starting cloning. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea. * Add entry points by using boot parameters ocs_savedisk_prerun, ocs_saveparts_prerun, ocs_restoredisk_prerun, and ocs_restoreparts_prerun in ocs-sr. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for these ideas. * Boot parameter ocs_overwrite_postaction has higher priority than the action assigned by option "-p" in ocs-sr, and "-pa" in ocs-onthefly. The value for ocs_overwrite_postaction is: [choose|reboot|poweroff]-on-[restoredisk|restoreparts|savedisk|saveparts|clone] E.g., choose-on-restoredisk means the postaction for restoredisk will always be choose no matter what is assigned in -p of ocs-sr or -pa of ocs-onthefly. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea. * Now ocs-live-preload checks if /opt/{overwrite-all-boot-param,overwrite-part-boot-param} exists (Downloaded from root of ocs_preload). File overwrite-all-boot-param is to overwrite the whole /proc/cmdline, while overwrite-part-boot-param only overwrites part of the variables in /proc/cmdline. Especially those "ocs_*" parameters. Thanks to Aaron Burling (aaron_burling /at/ lkstevens wednet edu) for this idea and providing sample codes. * Packages dislocker, ext4magic, myrescue, os-prober, powertop were added. BUG FIXES * Inform kernel partition changes only when disk is not busy. This should solve the issue: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/265/ * Replace boot parameter noprompt with noeject since live-boot >= v3 uses noeject, not noprompt. * Live-boot failed to mount vfat device as the boot media for Clonezilla live. Thanks to Little Vulpix for reporting this issue. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ba31ffc8 * Failed to create the checksum files for files in LV, i.e., when option "-gmf" or "-cmf" is enabled. Thanks to Mircea Dan. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/260/ * Change /proc/sys/vm/highmem_is_dirtyable to 1 when running i686 Linux kernel and the RAM size is larger than 8 GB. Thanks to Little Vulpix for this suggestion. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/ba31ffc8 * Clean file system/LVM info before creating partition table. Thanks to Mircea Dan (byreal /at/ users sf net) and Pete Morris (morrispj /at/ jmu edu) for reporting this issue. Ref: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/bugs/254/ * Disable service systemd-timesyncd. Clonezilla live should not change the system time. Thanks to Rick and rfried for reporting this issue. There is a residual setting in /etc/drbl/drbl-ocs.conf I believe. Therefore please follow http://drbl.org/installation/#upgrade to upgrade the DRBL system. It's recommended to run "rm -rf /etc/drbl" to clean all the settings after you uninstall drbl. Then install drbl and run "drblsrv -i" and "drblpush -i" again. First dd the image, then use partclone to save the partitions if the file system is supported by partclone. Of course you can use clonezilla to do that, too. > > And then once it is written, how to I resize the partition to fit the media? First you must have a equal or larger partition size. Once it's written, the resizing depends on the file system. There is a program on Clonezilla live called ocs-resize-part which you can use for this purpose. You can use it like: /usr/sbin/ocs-resize-part /dev/sdc1 to tune the file system on /dev/sdc1 to fit the partition size. What I mentioned was for legacy BIOS booting. The syslinux, which is used for the boot mechanism in legacy BIOS (MBR), does support FAT, NTFS, EXT, and BTRFS. However, for uEFI, it's better to use FAT. Clonezilla does not change the partition table type. If the source disk is MBR mode (MSDOS format), then the destination disk will be in MBR mode. If the source is GPT mode, then the destination disk will be GPT mode, too. I do not think your case is modified by Clonezilla.
