There is a possible trick that you might be able to utilize. I have not tried it, but I think it may work :-) VMware Workstation allows you to specify a vritual machine that points to a a RAW DISK for the "virtual disk". In this case, you would point it at your server's internal drive or drives. Once you do that, go through with specifying the guest type as Linux, etc, and then use PXE boot. Have clonezilla copy the entire disk or disks you want to clone. Bam. You just cloned a live machine :-P There are some possible downsides or reasons this may or may not work as I have *NOT* tried it, but I encourage you to! * VMware is closed source. Perhaps VirtualBox or KVM has a similar RAW DISK mode feature. * The host hard disk and partition might be in flux, and thus without proper file locking, your cloned image could be invalid/corrupted/incorrect. It may be possible to clone the image and then use a fsck utility to clean up the journal or other errors as a result, but I would test this first. Even though this is a silly hack suggestion, it just might work for you. Cloning a live machine via Clonezilla would be quite an amazing feat so let us know if you are able to do so. Hello Bill, I know mondo... but is not for me... because, it lacks a features. It cannot write/restore data via SSHFS... it only support NFS. Running Mondo on my server will produce 50 CDs !!! So, in case of restore after a disaster... I would burn 50 CD !!! For this, mondo support the storage and restoration over NFS, so, you don't need to burn 50 CD... but I cannot have NFS access... but SSHFS access. This is because I use clonezilla... that support saving/restore via sshfs connections. Ciao, Gianluca Bill Gurley ha scritto: > G. And I use it almost every day. But, long before clonezilla, I was using a different open source tool for situations like you describe, and that is Mondo Rescue: http://www.mondorescue.org/ It will backup a live filesystem, and will create iso files that can be used to create bootable restore CD's. I've been using this for years on my servers that stay up all the time. It uses a curses menu system (similar to clonezilla), but also supports command line capability. I have a script in a weekly cron that backs up the running system, but excludes the user space, which is backed up nightly using rsync. I use external usb disks, which I rotate, so the iso's are stored there. Here is an example script in cron.weekly: #!/bin/sh # # This is a script to run the "Mondo Rescue" program in archive mode # to backup the system, with certain excludes. This will create # ISO images which can be used to restore the system. # # # 'man mondoarchive' shows all of the switch options. # # # First, let's test to see if the USB drive is mounted, # then proceed. if (mount|egrep '/mnt/usbdisk' > /dev/null) then echo 'USB disk is mounted; Running the Mondo backup...' # Delete the old iso files... rm -f /mnt/usbdisk/Mondo/Atom* sleep 2 mondoarchive -Oi -d /mnt/usbdisk/Mondo -E "/mnt/usbdisk" -p Atom -9 -s 660m -F else echo The USB disk IS NOT mounted. fi So far, I have not had a catastrophe where I have needed to use these ISO's! But I have done test restores. It can get messy, if your situation has any complications, such as LVM. But if you take the time to learn about Mondo, this can be a very useful tool, as is clonezilla as well. -Bill- --------------------------------- Bill Gurley, Technical Director Department of Chemistry Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville 865-974-3145 |

Yes, it is possible. 1. Install the Clonezilla live in one of the partitions. Ref: http://drbl.sourceforge.net/faq/index.php#path=./2_System&entry=45_clonezilla_in_harddrive.faq 2. In your running OS, change the grub config file to let it default to boot from Clonezilla live, then reboot 3. Use the batch mode of Clonezilla live to save the image. 4. After the clone is done, change the grub config again to let it boot from existing OS. Reboot. This is just an idea. I did not test it, but it should work. Hello, So, the problem is that creating an image of a mounted disk can create a corrupted image because in the meanwhile the used blocks changes... right ?!?! I get it correctly ??? If I understand correctly, it's possible to create a script that automatically reboot the system, save the image, and reboot the server in batch without the user intervention ... so, I can create periodically backups of my server ??? Hi, Clonezilla is an image tool, which means it _images_ the used blocks of file system in a partition, not to mount the file system and save each files. Therefore, the answer is no. Although maybe it's possible you can try to force to save the mounted partition, the saved image might be corrupted. In the future, we might add file-based backup and restore... Who knows... Steven. Hello everybody, first of all, Thank you for Clonezilla... it's a fantastic system for cloning machines :-) I need to create images of a server hard-disk... but I cannot restart and boot the clonezilla-live for create the image. So, It would be fantastic if there is a way to run a command (script) that create the image without rebooting the server machine. There is a way to extract the command from clonezilla-live CD and install into my Linux Server and run it with a crontab ??? Thank you, Gianluca |

Philipp, If you can not judge the error messages, then you post or email me: 1. NFS export file 2. DHCP config file 3. TFTP config file 4. The /var/log/messages and /var/log/daemon.log in the server when your client fails. Without details files and messages, it's difficult to do something for you. Steven. Looks like the nfsroot failed. Did you check your NFS service is working and the log file in the server ? You can find some clues there. Steven. Philipp, Did you try something like this ? append initrd=images/clonezilla/initrd.gz boot=live union=aufs netboot=nfs nfsroot=$NFSSERVER:$NFSEXPORT Maybe the live initramfs used in Clonezilla live does not support secure (what's this for ?), nfsdir=... and init=/etc/init ... ? It's been a long time since last stable Clonezilla live. There are some major improvement and changes in this release. Here it's the release notes for Clonezilla live 1.1.0-8. New features: - French languages was added. Thanks to Jean-Francois Nifenecker. - Japanese languages was added. Thanks to Akira Yoshiyama. - Newer kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486 (2.6.24-6). - New upstream ntfs-3g 1.2506. - 1024x768 resolution option was added in Clonezilla live. Thanks to Scott Ochiltree for this idea. - Default to turn on TUI output for partclone. - The function to restore image to different disk/partition name was added. - New feature: now ocs-sr will prompt the command to run ocs-sr again when using "ocs-sr -x". - ///NOTE/// Parameters of ocs-onthefly were modified to be the same with ocs-sr, i.e. -k (was -n)/-k1/-k2, and -r (was -e). - xfs and jfs growing functions were added in resize_part. - Packages xfsdump and lscpi were added. - A package davfs2 was added so that webdav device can be mounted as Clonezilla image repository manually. Will add this function in prep-ocsroot in the future. - Some codes about mounting iSCSI dev were added in prep-ocsroot, however, not ready. - gPXE boot option was added in Clonezilla live boot menu. - Hard disk serial number will be shown in the info when saving image. - Turn on -r by default when restoring. - Now it's possible to clone small disk to larger disk proportionally (-k1 option) with filesystem matchs partition size. - Now live-initramfs instead of casper is used. The auto login account is 'user', and the password is 'live'. No password for root. - Numlock is turned on by default. - Some other minor bugs fixed and improvements. About Bugs fixed: - Bug fixed: ocs-onthefly failed to clone disk hda to disk hdb remotely. - Bug fixed: ocs-onthefly should not automatically create swap partition. - Bug fixed: /var/lib/apt/lists/lock was removed. Thanks to Louie Chen. - Bug fixed: "-e" option was broken. Thanks to Orgad Shaneh for this bug report. - Bug fixed: Because Live helper does not deal with the umountfs service when shutdowning/rebooting, we deal with that in Clonezilla live by modifying /etc/init.d/umountfs. Thanks to Scott Ochiltree. - Bug fixed: LV was not restored due to the variable target_dir was not changed to target_dir_full in restore_logv. - Bug fixed: ocs-functions was not able to list the size of cciss disk size. - Bug fixed: extra shift was removed in --extra-boot-param in ocs-iso. Thanks to Orgad Shaneh. - Bug fixed: ocs-onthefly failed to clone 2nd and the rest of LV remotely, due to the file descriptor problem. - Bug fixed: When swap partitions number > 2, and in /dev/[hs]d10 or more, restorartion failed. Thanks to frankiehung for reporting this bug. Some files name were changed. If you are hacking Cloneizlla live, be aware of these changes: - Exe files of partclone were renamed as partclone.$FS. - File kbdconf-bterm was renamed as ocs-kbdconf-bterm. - File tune the programs: ocs-live-run-menu, drbl-langchooser, S05kbd-conf, ocs-kbdconf-bterm - File resize_part was renamed as ocs-resize-part. - File makeboot.sh was renamed as ocs-makeboot. - File get_part_info was renamed as ocs-get-part-info. - File ocs was renamed as clonezilla since ocs will conflict with other package. - Files lvm2-start.sh and lvm2-stop.sh were moved from package drbl and renamed as ocs-lvm2-start and ocs-lvm2-stop, respectively. - File socket.pl was moved from package drbl here and renamed as ocs-socket. - File drbl-chnthn is renamed as ocs-chnthn. - File drbl-chnthn-functions is renamed as ocs-chnthn-functions. - Typo fixed: Was 640x640 in ocs-live-boot-menu. Thanks to Orgad Shaneh. Hi all, I try since a few days to build a custom clonezilla image that boot´s, mount automatic a samba drive and automatic restore the disk. Here my Idea´s: 1. I boot the clonezilla cd. 2. I put a file like 'sambamount' with the following content in /opt/drbl/share/ocs/prerun mount -t cifs -o username=username, password=password //IP/sharing /home/partimag 3. Change to command promt and edit /etc/ocs/ocs-live.conf ocs_live_run="/opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-sr" ocs_live_extra_param="-b restoredisk IMAGE_NAME hda" ocs_live_batch="yes" 4. After this i 'cd' to my usb stick (/home/usbmount) and run this command: /opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-iso -s The iso will be create but when i boot the iso there´s no difference between the original and my iso. I´m also tryed "/opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-iso -g en -k NONE -s -m" without success. Which command I must use that my changes will be successfully ? If there´s a other way to solve my problem please tell me the other way. BTW: I don´t want to include a image into the cd. I want to use the samba server where´s the imagefile saved. Sorry for my bad english ;) Kind Regards Steven |
