Hi, My concern is not directly related to Clonezilla, but generic to theconcept of cloning. I have a server with CentOS 5.3 and Samba. As a back up measure against HDD and other peripheral failure, I have purchased an identical PC and I plan to clone the main server and then run rsync on daily basis. Everything seems fine in this schematic and I am fine with this backup approach. My concern is: Both the server's have identical specs sans the ethernet. When I will restore the image on the 2nd PC, and boot, it will alert for a *new ethernet device found* and by default it will create a new interface ETH1 Is there any way to avoid creating the new ethernet device ETH1 and be able to use the the original ETH0. One thought which crossed my mind, but I have not tried is, after cloning, I can boot the server using a live distro (may be knopix), mount the cloned HDD and make changes to the ETH configuration, namely MAC address or whatever else. Not sure what should I change, and then boot the closed HDD. Does this make sense ? Will it help. Can someone throw light on how to prevent the creation of ETH1. Thx in advance. Best regards, Vai |

It transfers ca 1 - 1.5 GB/min, 17 - 25 MB/s which is much faster than partclone in my case. Why is partclone per default prefered? Hi there, is there somewhere an option to force use partclone.dd or dd instead of partclone.foobarfs? I didn't find an easy way to force use it. Same question for using partimage for on-the-fly-migration..? Regards, Lukas -- Lukas Grässlin Collax GmbH . Basler Str. 115a . 79115 Freiburg . I think the main reason for that bad speed is, that on the client side (the vm, where the physical machine is migrated to) the partclone.restore process procudes almost 100% CPU load. (It's s a vm with two cores, but it only uses one). Really? Is that possible you can: 1. Download Debian live, e.g. http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-cd/5.0.4-live/i386/iso-cd/debian-live-504-i386-standard.iso 2. Boot it, enter command line prompt 3. sudo -i 4. dpkg-reconfigure console-data then try to see if it works for French keymap or not? If you are sure there is no such issue, then the problem is definitely on Clonezilla live... Thank in advance. Hi Aaron, Thanks for proposing this. Yes, the way you showed is much better then the menus we have now. We will think about this and try to implement this in the future. If we started to work on this, we will let you know. Thanks again. Regards, Steven. Hi folks :), I'm testing Clonezilla and I have an issue with Dell servers: internal network card is an Broadcom. Debian doesn't have the right firmware (closed source), and the Ubuntu version doesn't work on these machines. Hello, (Sending it again, as it seems my first one didn't make it through.) I love Clonezilla and use it for backing up known-good states across both Windows and Gnu/Linux. To me, the power of Clonezilla is right up there, or possibly ahead, of competing projects like Ghost. I have been using Gnu/Linux now for about six years and am pretty comfortable with concepts such as mounting etc. I do, however, still find it very difficult and stressful to answer the questions correctly when backing up and restoring images. Two things that the current Clonezilla menu does that I think could be avoided are the following: 1) The current menu gives a lot of alternatives like "where would you like to save to/restore from". Where possible, it would be great if these were customised, so that when someone was backing up, it said "save to" and when they were restoring, it said "restore from". 2) The menu uses the concept of "partimag". I don't think that it is necessary to introduce this, unless the user chooses to drop to a shell and is manually mounting the location (in which case, it could be printed above the shell prompt). As a suggestion (and please feel free not to follow it), I see the following menus as preferable (after the keymap etc. questions): == Do you wish to backup your computer's disk/partition to a Clonezilla image or restore from a Clonezilla image to one of your computer's disks/partitions? (a) Backup to an image (b) Restore from an image == Do you wish to [backup/restore to, depending on the answer to the above] an entire disk, or just a partition of a disk? (a) An entire disk (b) A partition == [If backing up:] Which [disk/partition, depending on the answer to the above] would you like to backup? [If restoring:] Where is the Clonezilla image that you would like to restore? == [If backing up:] Where would you like to save the image of this [disk/partition, depending on the above answer]? [If restoring:] Which [disk/partition, depending on the above answer] would you like to overwrite with this Clonezilla image? WARNING: this will delete anything that is currently on this [disk/partition, depending on the above answer]. == [Existing final questions about compression etc., though no "mode" question should be necessary, as it should use "savedisk" if question 1 was "(a) backup" and question 2 was "(a) An entire disk", restoreparts if the answers were (b), (b) and so on.] ===== Not only do I find these questions a lot clearer, but I think that they better reflect the way that people think about the process. If I asked someone what they wanted Clonezilla to do, I would expect them to say that they wanted to "Backup their disk to an external hard drive" (note that this sentence fits question 1, 2 and 3 in order), or "Restore the image that I have on this DVD over the top of the windows partition". It also fits with the way that most copying tools work, eg "cp /from/here /to/here" (matching question 1, 2 and 3 in order above). Using Clonezilla is a very anxious procedure at the best of times, as the risks of something going seriously wrong (if a user gets things the wrong way around, for example) are high. I therefore think it would be excellent if the menus were as clear as possible. I'm happy to discuss these thoughts further, but I am not on the list, so please CC me in. Please take this in the way that it was intended. Your software is absolutely brilliant, so I wanted to do my best to help with something that I can help with -- which is making things clearer to users. Regards, Aaron |

> Did you see any error message or warning message when restoring? Yes, but unfortunately, I don't have the specifics. It was in the middle of the 2nd partition, NTFS, stating the partition image was corrupt. >> 2. Remove Dell partition, save image with 1.2.4.-28. I tried loading the image from the network, from a Samba share, multiple times and two identical systems and received the same error message. When I cloned the system with 1.2.3-37 and the loaded the image, there were no errors. I could suspect a network hiccup (1Gb with 1.4-2.0Gb per min transfer average), corrupting the image, but I cannot prove that yet. The 3rd partition, NTFS, seemed to transfer fine. Bill, Not a problem. Windows boots fine when the Dell partition is removed. There was two issues at hand: 1. Restoring to larger disk proportionally with 1.2.4-28 would not allow the system to boot. No resize restore worked fine. (yes, Windows was looking at sda2 for booting in this image) 2. Remove Dell partition, save image with 1.2.4.-28. Restore process would break with multiple attempts. - repeat process with earlier Clonezilla and restore process was fine. To your point, I did try removing the Dell partition from within fdisk but did not change/edit the win.ini. My bad. Thanks. Steve: Forgive me if this is obvious, but it's not clear from the thread if you are aware of this. Windows XP has a file in the root directory of C: (it may be a hidden file; I can't remember) called boot.ini. That file tells Windows which partition that the XP installation is on. If windows was booting from the second partition in the original installation and you have now removed the Dell utility partition, then maybe it is now needing to boot from the first partition. In this case you would need to edit the boot.ini file accordingly. Steven, Thanks for your input. I did remove the Dell partition while in Windows then confirmed in fdisk that it isn't there. However, I think the root cause is something with the 1.2.4-28 version (maybe partclone) since when I restored it, I would receive a CRC stdin error. I restored the previous image copy I had, saved the image with 1.2.3-37 then it was fine. I still have not tried to expand the newly revised image. Through one of the FAQ documents, I remember how to resize the partition while booting/running Clonezilla, but I really want to use the resize proportionally. A side, but maybe related, question on resizing: Do I need to have the use "'r'" for resize option enabled when using "-k1"? Thanks Steve On Apr 2, 2010, at 1:49 AM, Steven Shiau wrote: > > > On 2010/4/2 上午 01:12, Steve Poe wrote: >> I am using Clonezilla 1.2.4-28 to clone a Dell E4300 Windows XP laptop. >> I've noticed that there is a hidden partition (sda1 - FAT16) which >> contains the Dell utility.
