Steven, The boot process appeared to have worked, but after login on the console, nothing from the backup of the VMFS partition is recognized by ESXi server after the restore. I tried to run grub against the restore disk (sdb), but I could not figure out what command I needed. If I mounted the VMFS partition with Clonezilla, it appeared to be the data was there, but I am not sure. I'd really like to figure this out (I am on the hunt), but there's something amiss in the restore process possibly, unless there is some validation of the original VMFS files that causes the problem. I haev a ESX system here, and it's using grub 1 as the boot loader. Not sure if yours is different. To capture that, you have to start screen and run clonezilla manually to log that. Maybe in the future, we can have such a way to log most of the process. Hi Steven, I wasn't sure I needed to do that on an ESXi/VMware system. At least in my first attempt of the VMFS backup, I did not have to make any changes. Hi Steven, A disk-to-disk image recognized the VMFS partition, but the system failed to boot ("failed to find boot partition") when the system would boot using 1.2.5-17. I can mount the VMFS partition with the vmfs-fuse tool. Excellent! Now, I just don't know why it will not boot. VMFS partition is recognized as VMFS when creating a disk-to-image file. The VMFS partition is recognized as raw when creating a disk-to-disk clone. In my test, I was cloning a 750GB and attempting to restore on a 1TB disk but without changing the partition layout. Hello Steven, I got the latest release (a week ago) and used it to perform some restores. I chose to use SSH, so the network part configuration kicks in. After I entered the values for the correct NIC (I've done this hundreds of time in the past), I got this message: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ifconfig eth1 10.10.4.30 netmask 255.255.255.0 up 10.10.4.30: Host name lookup failure ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information. route add default gw 10.10.4.254 10.10.4.254: Unknown host Setting Nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf to 10.10.4.254 Done. ************************************************* No network card is configured! Do you want to configure again? [Y/n] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I chose no, indeed no network was configured. If I chose Yes, it went thru the whole process again to end at the same point. Finally, I had to fire up the command line and manually configure the card via "ifconfig". Then that worked. The server has 4 NICS and then one I was trying to configure was eth1. The DNS wasn't available at that time (but that shouldn't be an issue). I never had this problem in the past. It was "the latest stable release" a week ago. If you need more info let me know. Thanks! Jorge |

This release of Clonezilla live (1.2.5-35) includes major enhancements, changes and bug fixes. MAJOR ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES: * The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2010/Jul/20) * The Linux kernel was updated to 2.6.32-17. * This release was created by live-helper 2.0~a19-1.1drbl, and live-initramfs 1.236.2-1drbl-3 is used. * Partclone was updated to 0.2.11. * Default to use VGA 800x600 for Clonezilla live. Since most of the netbook does not support 1024x768, and 800x600 is the common one for most of the computers, and it's good enough for Clonezilla live. Thanks for swdotnet for suggesting this. * Program prep-ocsroot was improved to work with sshfs/cifs path with space. * Program ocs-iso is able to create the recovery iso larger than 4.5 GB. Thanks to Zoltan Kerenyi Nagy for reporting this issue. BUG FIXES * An extra shift should not exist in create-drbl-live. Thanks to Orgad Shaneh for this bug report (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=671650&aid=3016950&group_id=115473). * Programs ocs-iso and ocs-live-dev were improved to include only Clonezilla-related files. Other files in /live/image/ won't be included. -- Steven Shiau <steven _at_ nchc org tw> <steven _at_ stevenshiau org> National Center for High-performance Computing, Taiwan. http://www.nchc.org.tw Public Key Server PGP Key ID: 1024D/9762755A Fingerprint: A2A1 08B7 C22C 3D06 34DB F4BC 08B3 E3D7 9762 755A |

Trying Clonezilla 1.2.5-17 did not properly for backup/restore VMFS. The backup and restore process seems to go well, but the partition schema does not match nor is there any matching data in the VMFS partition. Unfortunately, there are no mount.vmfs tools in Clonezilla to actually see if I can mount the partition. Yet, the new ESXI server box does boot but does not retain any information from what was believed to be backup. Is it possible to use Clonezilla to backup the VMWare ESX/ESXi server and restore it on a larger storage and resize proportionally? Not really. Clonezilla can backup and restore the VMWare ESX/ESXi server, but it won't resize the file system. Unless you know a tool to resize the file system, like resize2fs to ext2/3/4. Steven. Thanks. I do not have Broadcom BCM5751 NIC here, therefore I can not test it. Is anyone on this forum can confirm if BCM5751 is supported by Clonezilla live lucid or not? Thanks in advance. Steven.
