Hi Bill, Same result with ext2 and mounting on /joe This root partition is recognized as ext3 type on the box (being cloned, can I called it clone-ee vs cloner). The clonee is RH AS4.0 (RedHat 4) about 2007 and kernel 2.6.9.* . So whatever mount(1) version and/or VFS version is placed in clonezilla, it should be able to read that. Is there any tools to actually read the superblock and see what type is recorded? Thanks On Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 12:26 PM, Bill Gurley <gu...@io...>wrote: > You might try mounting as ext2. You might try mounting as ext2. But also, I would never try to mount to /mnt. Make a directory in /mnt and use that. e.g., /mnt/Temp On 09/15/2010 03:22 PM, Montaseri wrote: > Thanks Les and Andy, > > I suppose I can ignore this type recognition if I can solve my real > problem, which lead me to this inquiry. > > My real problem is that I would like to boot off of clonezilla and > proceed to mount the root filesystem (of the box being cloned) to learn > stuff from /etc such as IP of the box and such. That’s normal. There was a kernel update somewhere in the 2.6 branch that deprecated the ide driver in favor of scsi emulation. I don’t know the exact details off the top of my head. Thanks Les and Andy, I suppose I can ignore this type recognition if I can solve my real problem, which lead me to this inquiry. My real problem is that I would like to boot off of clonezilla and proceed to mount the root filesystem (of the box being cloned) to learn stuff from /etc such as IP of the box and such. This is to automate the cloneing to an NFS location in a proper folder, for ease of restore and such. Currently when I clonezilla fdisk reports my root filesystem type to be 83. When I try to mount this like mount -t ext3 /dev/sda2 /mnt I get the following error message VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev sda2 mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2 ... .....and bunch of other suggestions including see dmesg Any suggestions... It has been my experience that linux will "see" PATA (the older IDE interface) drives as /dev/hda, etc., while SATA drives are treated like SCSI drives, or /dev/sda, etc. USB drives are ALSO seen as SCSI (/dev/sda). So this sounds pretty normal to me. On 09/15/2010 03:06 PM, Les Mikesell wrote: > Yes, it is on the list. I think this is just a side effect of the linux > version that is running. Yes, it is on the list. I think this is just a side effect of the linux version that is running. More recent ones map about everything into /dev/sd? devices - and worse, it isn't all that predictable which one will get which number as they are detected especially if any of them are hotplug and may or may not be present at boot. Hi, Just installed and tried Clonezilla ver clonezilla-live-20100721-lucid.iso and booted my Linux box. I have two PATA partitions and a few more SCSI partitions. When I run fdisk from my (native) linux box, I see [root@meditest]# fdisk -l Disk /dev/hda: 1048 MB, 1048190976 bytes 32 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1015 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2016 * 512 = 1032192 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 1 131 132047+ 83 Linux /dev/hda2 132 1015 891072 83 Linux Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 17 136552 83 Linux /dev/sda2 18 540 4200997+ 82 Linux swap /dev/sda3 541 1846 10490445 83 Linux /dev/sda4 1847 30401 229368037+ 5 Extended /dev/sda5 1847 3152 10490444+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 3153 4458 10490444+ 83 Linux /dev/sda7 4459 8636 33559784+ 83 Linux /dev/sda8 8637 9942 10490444+ 83 Linux /dev/sda9 9943 11248 10490444+ 83 Linux /dev/sda10 11249 12554 10490444+ 83 Linux /dev/sda11 12555 30401 143356027 83 Linux But when I boot off of clonezilla, and run fdisk -l, I get (bunch of stuff skipped) Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 131 nnnn 83 Linux /dev/sda2 132 1015 nnnnn 83 Linux // nnnn is ok...just lazy ...skipping stuff.... /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2 Basically, Clonezilla is seeing both my flash disk and sata disk as scsi disks? Thanks Robert, as per usual, the minute I post to a mailing list, I solve the problem. The problem is Windows - as long as I ensure that only one disk is in the PC when Windows is running, there is no problem. If you boot Windows with both disks resident, Windows does something to drive D which makes it no longer an exact copy. So when the system shuts down after cloning, I remove the second drive and put it in the cupboard until I need to restore it. I searched through the FAQ before posting here - I have an older FreeBSD system that has a lot of stuff on it I want to keep; the boot disk (MBR) is messed up, and I don't really care anymore as I'm using Linux. I wonder if I can mount the resulting *.img file(s) from Clonezilla in some manner and peruse and copy the data off that I need. Or is there another clever way to do this via unarchiving them into a filesystem or some other file that I can mount via loop? Thanks... |

Hi, I have an XP machine with 2 identical removable hard drives. I have installed a fresh version of XP SP3 on drive C: and want to clone this to drive D: The point is to be able to return drive C: to its current clean state whenever I need to. I performed a device-device clone using clonezilla and everything appeared to work properly. To check the clone, I swapped the two drives and booted off the clone. This seemed to boot OK. However, when I logged-in, firstly I received a message about finding new hardware (wtf) and then a service crashed. Everytime I boot off the clone and login, I get a service crash (the Event Log actually reports 24 separate Errors each time) Everytime I boot off the original, it works perfectly. I tried repeating the cloning process but with the same unsatisfactory result. I have done this previously with Ghost and had no problem. Is there some special option or incantation that I am missing? Hi, I ran fsck on the disk and I also verified the image using a SHA1 checksum. The image is rather large and contains sensitive data. However, I will try to create an image with smaller size and without any sensitive data showing the same problem. As soon as I succeeded in doing so I will provide that image to you. Hi, omitting the -C option does not work when restoring to a file (as expected). I also created SHA1 checksums in order to verify the image is OK. Mounting the partition from an image created with dd works, so it seems this is really a bug in clonezilla or partclone. Hi! I tried the latedst testing version of Clonezilla, and nothing happens after the yellow-wfite splas screen. I can scroll in between the menu items, 1024*768, memtest, etc. but after an enter nothing happens. Maybe a bug. Regards, Zoltan -- http://mbicomp.com/ |

I restore the image to a file and the partition holding the file is large enough to hold the restored partition. I can try it again omitting the -C option of partclone.restore but I am quite sure that it won't make a difference. By the way: partclone.restore is v0.2.14 and partclone.extfs is the version included in clonezilla live 1.2.5-35. The error message: "EXT4-fs (loop0): bad geometry: block count 47863659 exceeds size of device (47712800 blocks)" Maybe you have to check the destination partition size is equal or larger than the source one. Hi, I recently made an image of my HDD using clonezilla live and discovered a problem with the partclone image of an ext4 partition on that HDD. The ext4 partition is the root "/" partition of a Fedora 13 installation. Problem description: After creating an image (with gzip compression) of the HDD I ran # cat sda3.ext4-ptcl-img.gz | gzip -d -c | partclone.restore -C -s - -o sda3.img to obtain "sda3.img" which I want to loop mount using the command # mount -t ext4 -o loop,ro sda3.img /media/ext4test/ yielding the following error output from mount mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so the corresponding dmesg output is EXT4-fs (loop0): bad geometry: block count 47863659 exceeds size of device (47712800 blocks) I searched the web to find out if the problem is more widespread, but I did not (yet) find anything clonezilla/partclone related. The partition itself is OK since Fedora 13 boots flawlessly from it and fsck does not report any errors. However, due to the above error I cannot run fsck on the file "sda3.img". The error happens with both, the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of Fedora 13. Previously I never had problems with clonezilla and ext3 partitions. I hit this error using clonezilla-live-1.2.5-35-i686.iso and clonezilla-live-20100721-lucid.iso (the latest stable versions of clonezilla live). Additional information is attached. Did I miss an option in the mount command? Is there something else in the procedure I am using? I highly appreciate any help in resolving this problem. Thank you in advance! Regards, Andreas PS: The "/boot" partition on that HDD also uses ext4 and it can be loop mounted without any problems from an image using the procedure as described above. |

My personal opinion is that this only makes sense for future virtual machine installations. --NOT for restoration to "real" physical machines. The reason is that there would be so many instances of hardware drivers that are needed and not present, it would be crazy trying to get everything working properly. Hi all, I'd like to ask wheter is it possible with clonezilla. I'd do as it follows: -to install a 6 gig partition VMWare image with XP - put all program which I like (firefox, mediacoder, infra recorder, adobe flash, word, excel, norton 360 activated so far) - clone this imaginary partition with clonezilla inside the VMware machine and can I restore this clonezilla image to for different machines? Of course to bigger C partition thank 6 gig Will the XP pull the appropriate drivers after the restoring? Or with just minor tuning? I'd like to avoid long xp installations... Should I try this way? Thank you, Zoltan |

Hi Steve, OK, your case is actually ESXi, I did not notice that it's different from ESX. Looks like ESXi has its own boot loader, not grub. I have no idea about the boot loader of ESXi.
