    @teknoman,
Thanks. Please show the errors so that I can try to reproduce the problem here.

    Steven.

Hi Steven, sorry for the delay did not have time yet to load the version that produces the error.

But I just tried clonezilla-live-20150217-utopic-amd64 and confirmed that version worked fine. I will report back soon.

OK, it's reported that the testing Clonezilla live, e.g. 20150505-vivid and 2.4.1-15 should have fix this issue. Please test it if you can and let us know the results.
        Thanks.

        Steven.

Hello Steven, I have done more testing. I've isolated the problem some more and it seems to (also) be dependent on the version used to create the image. I have noticed the new images I created recently using 20140915-trusty-amd64 do not have a problem restoring, but trying an image I made back in August fails. I believe I used version 20140630-trusty-amd64 but I'm not entirely sure--ss there a way to verify the version used to create the image?

      From the problematic image
      Info-packages.txt:
Image was saved by these Clonezilla-related packages:
      drbl-2.9.9-drbl1 clonezilla-3.10.26-drbl1 mkswap-uuid-0.1.1-1drbl partclone-0.2.70.drbl1 drbl-chntpw-20110511-1drbl

Versions that I tested using to restore:
      20140915-trusty-amd64 - working
      20150217-utopic-amd64 - not working
2.3.1-18 (boot via UEFI) - not working
2.3.1-18 (unable to boot in Legacy mode)
      2.4.1-2-amd64 (UEFI) - not working
      2.4.1-2-amd64 (Legacy) - not working

I encountered the same problem described by the picture of Matthew Verive.
using clonezilla-live-20140915-trusty-amd64 as suggested by Stefano (thanks :) ) solved the problem.
it seems that the utopic version has problem restoring the gpt partition table, that is empty when partclone try to write the partitions.
the disk has 4 partitions: uefi, windows 7 and two hidden partition for disk restore (it is an acer pc)
Steve: i can post other information if you tell me what is needed

      @Max,
Could you try the latest alternative testing Clonezilla live, i.e. 20150505-vivid amd64 on
      http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
      ?
Please let us know the results.
      Thanks.

Thanks you. I couldn't restore backups for 2 months now on my new laptop.
"Unable to find target partition "sda1" error
I tried every 2015 version there is.

It's a really nasty problem/bug preventing you from restoring legit backups!

clonezilla-live-20140915-trusty-amd64 finally worked (although it did not boot into clonezilla and I had to login and start manually).

Can you tell how to login and then start clonezilla using this version? I've been having the exact same problem that everyone here and I want to try this version.

just download and install the trusty version boot from usb or a cd.
Timon encountered some problem and clonezzila for him does not started automatically, but this should not be happen.
Anyway in case you will face the same problem, read the documentation for the user you can use to login:

        http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php

after the login simply type 'clonezilla'

          mega - 2015-04-29

          That worked, thanks!
The version I used to make the backup was the stable 2.3.2-22amd64 in UEFI mode.

          To restore I tested with:
stable 2.3.2-22amd64 (both, uefi and legacy, not worked)
          testing 2.4.1-6i586 (not worked)
testing 2.4.1-11amd64 (both, uefi and legacy, not worked)
          clonezilla-live-20140915-trusty-amd64 (worked)

The system is Windows 8.1 original (UEFI)

Even 2.4.1-11amd64 not working? The gdisk in the version has been upgraded to 1.0 and it should be working because it's reported to be OK. If you can confirm it's still an issue, then I have to find the real culprit again...
            Thanks.

            Steven.

      @Timon,
This issue should have been fixed in Clonezilla live 2.4.1-15 or 20150505-vivid amd64:
      http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
Please give it a try if you can and let us know the results.
      Thanks.

How can I get the version clonezilla-live-20140915-trusty-amd64?

When I tried to clone my HDD dev-to-dev (1TB to 1TB), it seems that clonzilla didn`t create the partitions on the target drive in the first step and break up the process with the error notification "unrecognised disk label sdb1".

I used the 2.3.2-22amd64 version, my OS is Windows 8 original (UEFI).

    What else can I do?
I will be grateful for every helpful hint...

Just as a note. I also have a backup that I made in June 2014. Even with the latest vivid-based image, I cannot restore it. In the afternoon I will try with the trusty one!

Hello, same for me : just made a backup with 20150217 version. Unable to restore with 20150217 or 20150512. But restore works with old 20140915 version !

      @Valerio,
Some people mentioned it works to use Clonezilla live 20140915.
Or try this one I mentioned here:

    Hello everyone,

I've got this problem here too, exactly the same images from Mathew Verive.

The clonezilla version to made the savedisk was live-20150217 and to restore i tried the options:

    live-20150217
    stable releases - 2.3.2-22,
    alternative testing releases - 20150519-vivid

The program is running from a USB created by YUMI program and the image is saved in an external HDD.

Im trying to restore Win8 to the same notebook it was saved from, and the options were defaults, in restore and save. Im a begginer with it so if need comand lines please leave it step-by-step.

    EDIT:
Appear to work fine with 20140915, restore is still in progress

Same problem here. Could not restore a Win8.1 image with a gpt partition.
Using the latest stable and even unstable iso didn't work (2.4.2-4-amd64), but as suggessted by @stefanonovelli, using 20140915-trusty-amd64 saved my day. Thanks Stefano!

I don't remember which version I used to create the image, but info-packages.txt says:

Image was saved by these Clonezilla-related packages:
    drbl-2.13.7-drbl1 clonezilla-3.13.29-drbl1 mkswap-uuid-0.1.1-1drbl partclone-0.2.76.drbl1 drbl-chntpw-20110511-1drbl

    Hi everyone

I took an image of a new Travelmate B115 using clonezilla-live-20150217-utopic-i386. I could not restore it using the same version, or with any other version I have tried. The recent ones all failed with the message "unable to find target partition sda1". Trusty has been suggested, but it would not successfully boot.

Finally I found that the GPT partition table had been written, but the protective MBR was missing. I used gdisk to write the protective MBR, then started clonezilla in expert mode. I disabled anything that would affect the MBR or the GPT partition table, I used the existing partition scheme, and it seems to have worked. Windows went into its OOBE stuff on startup as it should.

    Hopefully this will help somebody.

    Peter

A clearer (but still very short) outline of what worked for me.
Step 1: Go through the automatic stuff until you get the error.
Step 2: Go to another console and run gdisk. It shows that the partitions are present, without the protective MBR. Exit it, saving so that the protective MBR is written.
Step 3: Go back to the first console, go through until you can restart clonezilla, use expert mode and do not let it write anything to the partition table (MBR or GPT).

I suspect step 2 may be optional, but having a protective MBR is a good idea anyway.

    Peter

I can confirm the same error exists with the live release for amd64 called "stable releases - 2.4.2-10", copied on USB using LiLi. When using disk-to-disk local method for a full disk clone, the clone process fails saying the target partition was not found just as in the screenshots attached.

In my case those are the disk's I'm using:

    • Source disk: HDD, 160Gig, MBR bootsector, formatted with 2 NTFS partitions (Windows 7 x64 default layout - basicly 100MB system part and rest actual data partition)
    • Target disk: SSD, 256Gig, Factory formatted (no partitons / filesystem / bootsector yet)

The behaviour is the same as shown in the screenshots the other guys posted.

    @m451,
For the issue, we focus on the uEFI machine. However, in your case you mentioned it's "MBR bootsector". Therefore maybe this is different case. Could you please give Clonezilla live 20150608-vivid amd64 a try?
Please let us know the results.
    Thanks.

    Steven.
