This optimization is not worth keeping. Earlier, without CLOS and tons of other stuff in the memory image, the savings were higher. But now... Hi Bruno, It appears that the only reason we have subrkw.d in addition to subr.d is: --- TURBO-C doesn't get enough memory for compilation! (comment in spvw.d:init_subr_tab_2). I tried to enable that code and - lo and behold - it worked! (Well, after I fixed some bitrot :-). So, we can get rid of subrkw.d now! The new code generates a larger run time (by a 0.2%, or 4k) and a larger memory image (by 0.1%, or 3.5k) though. This is because subrkw allows subrs to share keyword vectors, thus eliminating the code to create identical vectors and memory to hold them. -- Sam Steingold (http://sds.podval.org/) on CentOS release 5.6 (Final) X 11.0.60900031 http://jihadwatch.org http://camera.org http://openvotingconsortium.org http://palestinefacts.org http://memri.org http://truepeace.org Only a fool has no doubts. |

Hi Bruno, Do you know of any system (existing or planned or imagined) for which it would make sense to define PATHNAME_EXT and undefine PATHNAME_NOEXT? -- Sam Steingold (http://sds.podval.org/) on CentOS release 5.6 (Final) X 11.0.60900031 http://mideasttruth.com http://www.memritv.org http://palestinefacts.org http://openvotingconsortium.org http://memri.org Takeoffs are optional. Hi Bruno, > now, what about HAVE_ENVIRONMENT? > can this be dropped as well? > presumably yes... there are quite a few other "options" which are always defined but which are unlikely to be ever turned off: MACHINE_KNOWN LOGICAL_PATHNAMES HAVE_SHELL (but not GENERIC_STREAMS). Hi Sam,
> it appears that clisp can have !LANGUAGE_STATIC && !GNU_GETTEXT.
> i.e., no gettext but the language is dynamic.
> what does it mean? whats the point?
A long time ago, the English and German strings were coded in the .d and .lisp
files, and clisp could be compiled in 3 ways:
- LANGUAGE_STATIC: the language is hardcoded (2 possible choices).
- !LANGUAGE_STATIC && !GNU_GETTEXT: the language is settable at runtime
(2 possible choices).
- !LANGUAGE_STATIC && GNU_GETTEXT: the language is settable at runtime
(more than 2 possible choices).
Then, the German strings were moved out to .po files, and the situation is:
- LANGUAGE_STATIC: the language is hardcoded (1 possible choice).
- !LANGUAGE_STATIC && !GNU_GETTEXT: the language is settable at runtime
(1 possible choice).
- !LANGUAGE_STATIC && GNU_GETTEXT: the language is settable at runtime
(more than 1 possible choice).
The first and second ways were kept distinct, because I thought there
could be one more change in i18n methodology. But GNU gettext and separate
PO files are pretty well established by now; it's unlikely to change again.
Therefore you can drop the first or second way, and drop the LANGUAGE_STATIC
macro in the process.

On OSX without gettext build fails due to changeset 15375: spvw_language.d:33 - language is defined static but in lispbibl.d:9658 it is defined as global. hg tip builds for me in linux and solaris. please build hg tip on woe32 (and other weird platforms) and report problems here. please use "hg bisect" to pinpoint the specific changeset which triggered the problem. thanks. -- Sam Steingold (http://sds.podval.org/) on CentOS release 5.6 (Final) X 11.0.60900031 http://thereligionofpeace.com http://www.PetitionOnline.com/tap12009/ http://mideasttruth.com http://www.memritv.org http://memri.org Beauty is only a light switch away. |

more inconvenient than you imagine:
machine 1:
$ hg strip 15379
hg: unknown command 'strip'
'strip' is provided by the following extension:
mq manage a stack of patches
use "hg help extensions" for information on enabling extensions
machine 2, even worse:
$ hg strip 15379
hg: unknown command 'strip'
Mercurial Distributed SCM
basic commands (use "hg help" for the full list or option "-v" for
details):
add add the specified files on the next commit
annotate show changeset information per file line
...
How about this alternative:
$ cd [directory above clisp ...]
$ mv clisp clisp-2011-5-17
$ hg clone http://clisp.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/clisp/clisp

building with g++ (DEBUG_GCSAFETY) ends with errors: In file included from ../../src/gllib/fnmatch.c:172: ../../src/gllib/fnmatch_loop.c: In function ‘int internal_fnmatch(const char*, const char*, const char*, bool, int)’: ../../src/gllib/fnmatch_loop.c:152: error: invalid conversion from ‘const void*’ to ‘const char*’ ../../src/gllib/fnmatch_loop.c:203: error: invalid conversion from ‘const char*’ to ‘char*’ .... I made some large changes in the last few days. Alas, some changes were not committed correctly, so I had to fix the repo. The upshot is the following: If you have NOT pulled from SF _today_, please 'hg pull -u' and try to build. If you HAVE pulled today from SF (e.g., Vladimir), you need to do 'hg strip 15379' first. Sam,
Following change in arilevel1.d causes the build to fail:
1.7 -#if (defined(MC680X0) || defined(SPARC) || (defined(I80386)
&& !defined(BORLAND)) || defined(MIPS) || defined(VAX) ||
defined(ARM)) && !defined(NO_ARI_ASM)
1.8 +#if (defined(MC680X0) || defined(SPARC) || (defined(I80386)
&& defined(MIPS) || defined(VAX) || defined(ARM)) &&
!defined(NO_ARI_ASM)
There is missing bracket in the #ifdefs and while I've "fixed" it
locally - can you have a look on it?
Vladimir

cool.
please pull hg tip and try this:
(with-collect (c) ; check that setting *current-language* actually works
(dolist (l '(german french russian english))
(c (list (setq *current-language* l)
(getenv "LC_MESSAGES")
(sys::text "Bye.")))))
((DEUTSCH "de_DE" "Bis bald!")
(FRANÇAIS "fr_FR" "À bientôt!")
(РУССКИЙ "ru_RU" "До свидания! Не поминайте лихом!")
(ENGLISH "en_US" "Bye."))
I fixed init_language so that if the locale directory is not supplied,
then bindtextdomain is not called and thus whatever was set at startup
is reused.
I hope turning off localized messages will now work.
Please do not hesitate to report your problems here or on the SF bug tracker.
Thanks for your report.
