I have used both MySQL and PostgreSQL on many Linux boxes with no conflicts. Other than the obvious ones of RAM and hard drive limitations of having multiple heavy-duty software packages running and storing potentially massive amounts of data. I've installed both on at least one Windows box, again with no problems. Well, no more problems than Windows had *before* the installations. :-) If you worked really hard at it, I suppose you could configure both to use the samr port to listen to connections, or store their files in the same directory, with the expected train wrecks that would entail... At that point, you'd be TRYING to make it fail, though. -- Some people have a "gift" link here. Know what I want? Andromeda is an application framework written in PHP. We have been working lately to have it running on Windows. With feedback from users we have identified and removed the largest glitches and now are able to use Andromeda on Windows for regular development. The features that we have tabled for now involve source and version control, so a person using Andromeda on Windows today would have to manually copy files from a dev machine to a production machine. Andromeda makes use of Postgres (not mySQL), but you don't have to know much about Postgres, the install of Postgres runs pretty smooth in our experience, and it is not known to interfere with mySQL (any feedback on that would be welcome). We have a special page just for installing on Windows: http://www.andromeda-project.org/pages/cms/Running+On+Windows -- Kenneth Downs Secure Data Software, Inc. www.secdat.com www.andromeda-project.org 631-379-7200 Fax: 631-689-0527 |

Hi Everyone! BARcamp - Chicago 2007 is in the planning stages now, shooting for June, and I wanted to reach out to everyone and give an update and ask for help. Last years BARcamp was a big success, thanks to most of you on the list here and all the people that showed up and contributed. I have been getting pings from lots of people over the last few months about the next one and based on community feedback I am expecting it to be at least twice the size of last years. I picked up a few ideas from attending Yahoo's HackDay and a few other events. Also, I believe Chicago's Web2.0 Beta Meetup for the month of June will happen at BARcamp. Other user groups are welcome to hold meetings there (just not all at the same time) to get broader community involvement. It may be a good place to have a beginners intro to your language as part of the meeting. Where we are at: ---------------- The search for the venue is on! This is the biggest hurdle. Last year the community came through in a big way for everything else but we have to have a place to make it happen. What We Need: ------------- A VENUE! 1) 5000+ sq/ft (last year was 2600ish I think?).. 2) 72 full hours access, Friday evening to Monday morning (last year I finished cleaning up at 06:30am Monday morning) 3) A shower would be great. AC is a must. NOTE: June should be cooler than last year ;-) 4) No serious noise constraints (last year was quiet enough but still would have disturbed sleeping neighbors) 5) Close-ish to downtown Chicago or L stop. 6) Internet access.. somehow.. What We Have: ------------- 1) Insurance 2) A reasonable budget to pay for the facility for the weekend 3) Equipment, sundries, volunteers and enthusiasm ;-) What Can You Do: ---------------- Help in any form is welcome. 1) Help find a venue, send me names, phone numbers, addresses.. anything you can think of to help find a space. 2) Blog, post, link, forward the email, spread the word. The wiki isn't live yet, but will be coming on-line shortly: http://barcampchicago.com/ 3) Sponsorship - just like last year, not asking for a lot, no set fees, no admission to attend so its all volunteer and sponsor driven. 4) Give a talk - we had some great presentations last year. This year we may have a start-up competition and some more organized hack-jams/code-sprints. 5) Show up!.. everyone is welcome if you are interested in technology and the community here in Chicago. Well, thats it for now. Feel free to email me or give me a call if you have any ideas, suggestions or questions! -jason ja...@ho... 847.208.1000 |

So... Let's try and be more inviting to beginners with a "Beginner's Break" at the start of each meeting, eh? I've been meaning to do this, and tried to get started with it before, but hopefully we'll follow-through better this time... I also definitely like the idea of ending with specific user questions, time permitting. That does tend to lead to small group stuff, and sometimes total anarchy and a meeting that drags on. Perhaps we could take turns coming up with something good for a beginner, or taking an on-line tutorial and re-working it for our own site or... To get the ball rolling, how about some "old hands" answer this open-ended question OFF-LIST to me, and I'll see what I can pull out of it for the JUNE meeting Beginner's Break. (MAY being php|tek itself...) What one thing do you wish somebody had told you when you were a beginner? I'll even try to have some kind of beginner's Tips for tonight's meeting, if I can squeeze out a half-hour of free time from work and meeeting prep errands... |

One of the things we do here at our DCPHP meetings is have an "open question" time where people throw out issues that they've been dealing with recently (solved or not) to get feedback. It's stunning how often you're dealing with something that someone else recently solved, figured out a way around, read about, etc. Just because something is new/old to you doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. These discussions often break up into a few smaller groups as the nitty-gritty of the issue is talked about, but it gives a great opportunity to talk with other people of varying skills/experience. Hey Roderick! This is Jason, I do remember you coming to the meetings and the flurry of emails with coding questions. My short answer is that if, over the last year, you have not mastered some of the PHP language and associated programming environments then you might not get as much tangible value out of the conference (other than hearing me speak of course ;-) ). You will likely get value learning what things are possible, networking, and possibly picking up a lot of specific technical pointers that you wouldn't get easily otherwise. Regarding the fact that some of our meetings get pretty heavy technically, I think you are right that we should probably set aside some time every other meeting to cover intro and basics. Most of the group are old hands at PHP and we care about pushing the envelope but we should, as a group, try a bit more to help newbs get up to speed. Maybe a beginner hack-camp at one of the meetings..?.. Regarding your tone in correspondence, I think we had a little tension a while back over just that topic. I would say that you are getting enough push back from multiple sources to indicate that your tone isn't always received the right way. I would suggest trying something new in the way that you email the groups. One tactic that they teach sales people and customer reps is to compose an email, save it as a draft, go do some other task, come back and re-read it, and then send it. That may help.. Hmm.. reply to long winded email with long winded email.. Ah well.. good luck and hope to see you around! -jason Roderick Thomas wrote: > Hey everybody, > > I'm sure some of you remember me. Hey everybody, I'm sure some of you remember me. Around this time last year I was constantly requesting help with scripting issues and I attend several meeting on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I'm considering attending the upcoming conference, but I'm concerned that I may not receive any real benefits from doing so. And the fact that the cost is expensive for my budget doesn't help matters. I really appreciate all of the help that I've gotten from you folks, but I've often felt like my questions have been annoying. And most times when I receive helpful scripts in response to my question, I don't know how they should be structured with the rest of my script. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I've actually gotten headaches at some of the UserGroup meetings as a result of the discussions being so far out of my conceptual grasp. But it's not just you. I've gotten booted from online UserGroups for creating so much tension by asking questions that greatly annoyed many of the other members. And I've done the same thing with this group also. Thank goodness you guys were kind enough to let me stay on the list anyway. I have a true passion for dynamic scripting, but my quest has been extremely frustrating. So please, be brutally honest... Do you think it's a good idea for me to attend the conference? Below is a message that I sent to PHPTEK--asking the same question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm hardly a programmer, at all. However, I'm fascinated with PHP and all that dynamic scripting entails. I have developed a web-based application that stores and displays contact information for my department's affiliated agencies. While my application is very basic and poorly built as compared to the big scheme of PHP, my department and close friends think the world of it (I'm the most technical person they interact with on a personal level). I would desperately like to enhance my programming skills and make better use of PHP, but it's been my experience that PHP user groups discussions have been over my head. And when more advanced programmers take time to talk with me, they tend to spend more time criticizing my structure than sharing coding pointers with me. It seems that the more I ask for clarification, the more I annoy my mentors. I don't like irritating them by asking questions that they consider redundant, but I also find it frustrating to sit through lengthy talks that I'm unable to connect with. I would hate to have that sort of an experience at a conference that I've paid over $1,000 to attend. Your conference is very expensive for my budget. However, I think it could be well worth the sacrifice if it helps to improve my programming skills. Will the conference provide a comfortable environment for novice programmers? Am I at a good place to benefit from the Add-On Tutorial sessions? |

Actually, I have to agree. I usually reply publicly and rarely reply to individual... cuz, ya know.. what I have to say is so important.. uhh.. But seriously the volume of replies is generally group discussion and it is a lot of clicks and backspace keys to get it to not reply to list and sender. If the primary intent of a list is for mass distribution with occasional replies back to the sender, then yes, Reply-All gets in the way. If the primary intent of a list is discussion, then not having Reply-All set breaks the discussion. Repeatedly. At best, it means that people get multiple copies of replies to them because one goes to them and one goes to the list. (Am I the only one that *really* hates that?) I've heard the arguments against Reply-All. They all come down to "but it's so *hard* to reply to an individual then if I want to." See the first point; on a discussion list, you rarely *want* to reply to an individual. And it's only "hard" if your mail reader is pine or mutt or something equally ancient. If you're using an MUA developed this century, it has a copy and paste function that works quite well for the rare cases you want to reply to an individual. Viva Reply-All! reply-all is evil when you use it for a group of people who have not opted to join a list together and be represented jointly by one email address. Think of the list as "one" -- one programmer with many heads who is trying to have a public discussion with itself.. That might get you off the "reply-all is evil" mentality which doesn't fit a listserv where the forum is public by default... +1 to change the settings :) Richard Lynch wrote: > I'm still stuck in the reply-to-all-is-evil camp, so the list settings > are unlikely to change soon, even if sourceforge allows it... > > I was actually thinking of just hanging out at php|tek *as* a meeting... > > When I was thinking anyway... > > On Tue, April 17, 2007 4:51 pm, Jough Dempsey wrote: > >> I see what Larry meant about the configuration of the list. >> >> Meant to send this to all... >> >> On 4/17/07, Jough Dempsey <jou...@gm...> wrote: >> >>> I don't know how many people in the group are going to PHP|tek (I >>> am) but >>> it seems like it would make sense to push the ChiPUG meeting back a >>> week - >>> maybe we could discuss the conference for those who can't attend? >>> >>> Is anyone else planning on taking the Zend certification exam while >>> at the >>> conference? I'm still stuck in the reply-to-all-is-evil camp, so the list settings are unlikely to change soon, even if sourceforge allows it...
