If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? A few members of the community have gotten together to organize an Ignite event here in Chicago at Goose Island Wrigleyville 6pm on Thursday 12/6/2007. There have been several Ignite conferences already on the East and West coasts, but if our initial speaker list is any indication, ours in Chicago will be the best yet. For more information check out these three sites: RSVP / map / address : http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/309951 (the event is free and there are sponsored drinks) More information about Ignite Chicago: http://ignite-chicago.org/ More information about Ignite in general: http://ignite.oreilly.com/ Sorry for the spam, but hopefully this is relevant enough to the list that nobody will get upset. This really will be a fun event. Sean |

PEAR fills a couple of roles for people. For some people it provides access to system libraries that may not be compiled in on the particular shared hosting environment that they happen to be using. Other people its application level libraries that they dont want to code themselves (I use a DNS pear module for this reason). Others its compatibility to legacy code (BLOWFISH encryption was once only available via PEAR). etc. etc. etc. It is nothing more than a library system, kinda like CPAN for Perl (although obviously not as mature). As a rule of thumb, if you dont understand something, either learn it well or dont use it. There is a lot of variation in code quality, compatibility and support in PEAR (just like CPAN). Wherever possible use the OS libraries that are compiled into PHP, and if you need something, get it compiled in. Hope that helps ;-) |

Hi Everyone! So its been a while since BARcamp Chicago 2007 and wanted to update everyone on a bunch of stuff.. OK, so first, Keith Schacht of ChicagoBeta/JobCoin/Facebook App fame had set up a free public job board for ChicagoBeta and BARcamp Chicago communities. There have been a few postings there (including a few from my company ;-) ) and wanted to let everyone know that its free to all and available. Check it out, post your jobs, etc.: http://barcampbeta.jobcoin.com/ Next up, we have some very cool events coming up this month. These are great places to meet other start-ups, smart people and, do as I do, get drunk off of free booze.. ;-) Thu Nov 8th 8:00am - Early Stage Marketplace: http://www.chicagolandchamber.org/sub/event_calendar_detail.asp?EVE_ID=930 Thu Nov 8th 5pm - Songza Launch Party (Aza and Humanized gang presented at BARcamp): http://www.songza.com/ Tue Nov 13th 6:15pm - MIT-EF Breakthrough Computer Interfaces (Aza again.. man he gets around ;-) ): http://www.mitefchicago.org/dojo/18/v.jsp?p=/home Thu Nov 15th 6:30pm - The great TECHcocktail 6! (bet you Aza will be there): http://www.techcocktail.com/blog/ Also, thanks to Henry Lee of Transwestern, we may have a very good venue for BARcamp next year. Connect with me or the BARcamp organizer list at LUNI to get involved! Lastly, I wanted to get feedback from all of you on something a lot of people asked for in the past. Should we have 2 BARcamps a year, spring and fall, rather than 1 in the summer? Email me back with a vote or thoughts. How many BARcamps per year? 1 or 2? Looking forward to seeing you all soon and hope this years been great for everyone! -jason |

Well: I have no clue what is going on. But I did just move to Chicago from Texas and thought I'd register on this listserv; I'd like to say hi to everyone. I work out in the suburbs, but hopefully some time in the near months I'll be able to make it to one of the lunches or after work seminars/things you guys do. Let me nip something in the bud before this gets out of hand... The hosting is paid for already, by me, and it's on the php.net domain, as well as the sourceforge servers, and that is not changing. I already volunteer enough thank you very much, and don't need your "requirement" to do so. If you don't like the jobs being posted, just hit delete. If you want better discussion, start one. Failing that, if you dislike the list that much, just leave, and start your own list. Neil, FWIW, in function sess_touch(), remove one 's' from "UPDATE sesssions" Also, in session_set_save_handler(), you've got function sess_touch listed twice. I'm not sure if that contributes to the problem. -----Original Message----- From: chi...@li... [mailto:chi...@li...] On Behalf Of Nei...@rc... I hate how this thing doesn't reply to list by default ;) And no I'm not trying to goad Rich though that can be fun too ... Anyway I only sent this to Matt originally. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hank Marquardt <hma...@gm...> Date: Oct 26, 2007 9:49 AM Subject: Re: [chiPHPug-discuss] CHIPHPUG REDACTED To: matt donohue <mm_...@ya...> I feel your pain, though I have a couple thoughts as well. I was around at the beginning and then largely disappeared before rejoining the lurker crowd a year ago or so. I think the internet has all but killed user groups of all sorts, there simply is better/bigger/more varied information out and available through google usually than you'll find from a loose knit association of folks bound by geography. When this group started, php was in the early 3.x tree and was relatively speaking not widely adopted or understood, but here were a few of us that had experience with it and many more that were curious so we started meeting mostly to help new folks and answer questions. Today putting 'php development' in google or perusing a shelf at Border's will leave you with decisions about what is good information and what is better information ... not simply trying to find information. So yes, we have just sort of drifted along without a lot of purpose, traffic, etc. At the end of the day though we still are a loose knit group of folks bound by geography and a common interest, so with little infrastructure to support we continue to exist, though perhaps not thrive. It is what it is. As to your suggestions, I certainly don't want to be a wet blanket, though in starting a new site or purpose you're always faced with 'what can I do different or better?' and against the traction other sites already have; facebook, ning, twitter, myspace, second life, insert your favorite here ... I'm not sure how to answer that question; though if you have an answer, go for it. The "Chicago PHP Society builds web site for No Kill Animal Shelter" is an interesting idea ... a Chicago PHP Not for Profit Assistance Center could be an interesting 'project' or entity of itself, though smaller freelance folks would likely see that as competition to their market and not participate, but still an interesting concept. Probably not much heat or light shed above, but having been around since the beginning I at least have perspective for what that's worth. Hmm I guess I'm more the care bare spirit. While I do nod and agree with much of what you say Matt. I do think slamming someone looking for help as a bit harsh. For me I'm not much of a meeting type either, I'm more of the go it alone and toss an idea out when I'm frustrated by a problem. I do enjoy problem solving which is why I join lists like this in the first place. If someone has a problem I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure it out, that's all I am looking for in this user group, so to each their own. I agree about the website though as a community user group who am I to complain about it if I'm not going to fix it. If you want a new site / majordomo try building it and propose it and see if it gets ratified. Alec On 10/25/07, matt donohue <mm_...@ya...> wrote: > > Young? What about using something like Facebook or Ning to host the user group site? I think that solves a few of the things that bug you like member lists & profiles. It's also nice because maintaining a web site always seems to become a problem for user groups. At least with Facebook it's handy to have the Events functionality for RSVPing / posting photos / discussions etc. Ning has some nice features like creating a private social network. For example, we could create something to host multiple user groups in Chicago and then have individual groups within that like Ruby UG, PHP UG, .NET UG etc. Something like: http://techandthecity.ning.com/ (I just made that in Ning in about 5 mins) It would be nice to have more of the Chicago developer UGs consolidated in one area. I work mostly with .NET, but I am interested in other stuff like Django, PHP, Ruby and all of the separate mailing lists / lack of centralized event lists make it tough to keep up on stuff going on in the city. Ning doesn't have event functionality though which sucks. For me, more and more of the people I interact with through work are using Facebook and I've found it rather useful. It's been especially helpful for organizing developer events in the city and having technology discussions. -kevin On Oct 25, 2007, at 5:55 PM, Nola Stowe wrote: > I believe there has been requests for someone to help with the website > in the past --- and it was talked about at the meetings. > > Are you volunteering? > > On 10/25/07, matt donohue <mm_...@ya...> wrote: >> Preface- I know I must be wrong at least 51% of the time >> otherwise, I would be way ahead at poker. >> >> In case anyone was put off by the snark (Arlo already vented), I >> profer this rant, >> >> I sometimes find myself frustrated by the purpose of the list (and >> it's lack of humor). Matt, Forgive me, but you must be fairly young. ;-) User groups never have a "purpose" or "vision" or any such thing.. It's like a street market.. lotsa "other peoples treasure" and the odd thing that you find valuable. That being said, the value I find in it is keeping a loose finger on the pulse of local mindsets in relation to PHP. That helps about as much as watching CNN helps the average person, but I still find it useful. The other purpose it serves is a place for young people with energy to use it as a springboard to do interesting things with their time, passion and energy. It does sound like you are volunteering ;-) It is a pool of people, although not like-minded, with at least one or more common interest that you can draw from, serve or dismiss as your enthusiasm dictates. I organize a yearly tech event and try and keep in touch with the user groups and support other people doing interesting things. Do something interesting and I'll support it. As to discussion, it is a community with _widely_ varying levels of expertise so its hard to have a standard. I personally would like to have more involved discussions about some advanced topics but its difficult on a list. Meetings are better places for the discussion I enjoy, usually. Cheers and have fun.. Maybe build a new website to help with some shortcomings you see. -jason matt donohue wrote: > Preface- I know I must be wrong at least 51% of the time otherwise, I would be way ahead at poker. > > In case anyone was put off by the snark (Arlo already vented), I profer this rant, > > I sometimes find myself frustrated by the purpose of the list (and it's lack of humor). I believe there has been requests for someone to help with the website in the past --- and it was talked about at the meetings. Are you volunteering? Hello. I know i haven't been around in awhile. I have been busy. You know how it is. I will return someday. However! We (threadless/skinnycorp) are looking to hire a MYSQL/PHP engineer. Notice that i put MYSQL first. This position would be more of a DBA, but they would obviously have to know a lot of PHP. We are a PHP shop who manages threadless.com and a few other fun sites. We do communities. And we bring swag to parties. So anyway. If anyone wants more info feel free to email me directly. Thanks, Harper |

I am trying to put in a simple session tracker. I thought I had followed the instructions for overloading the session routines, but I'm getting nothing . . . Please suggest things to try, or point out what I haven't noticed! Here's how my files now begin: <?php session_start(); include_once('exe/includes/session_auth.php'); . . . and here's "session_auth.php": <?php // require_once('../../Connections/mysqlconnect.php'); // required in calling routines function sess_touch($sess_path, $sess_name) { $GLOBAL['sessid'] = session_id(); $now = time(); $sqlUPDATE = "UPDATE sesssions SET touch = " . $now . " WHERE sessid = '" . $GLOBAL['sessid'] . "'"; $sqlINSERT = "INSERT sessions (sessid, login, touch) VALUES ('" . $GLOBAL['sessid'] . "', " . $now . ", " . $now . ")"; if( (!mysql_query($sqlUPDATE)) & (!mysql_query($sqlINSERT)) ) { // fail } return 1; } function sess_close() { $now = time(); mysql_query("UPDATE sessions SET logout = $now WHERE sessid = '" . $GLOBAL['sessid'] .
