[chiPHPug-discuss] ISO "sometime" help...

I'm in need of a "third hand".

I have a (sometime gig) with a firm and at times I need help getting
somethings done for them to get the turn around within the frame they
need.

I would like someone who I can count on to turn things around within a few
days, a week at the most.

Pays not the greatest, but it should be 10 to 20 hours a month, or so.

 * PHP 5 is best
 * PHP OOP OOP would be nice.
 * mySQL is a must
 * ADOdb would help
 * I don't care about OS

Any takers?

hood, there is a great new wine bar opened up by some friends of mine 
who own the Celtic Knot here in Evanston.  Taste at 1506 Jarvis.

I've been meaning to check it out for a while and thought I'd see if 
anyone wanted to make it an unofficial PHP outing..

Also cool that php-tek will be here again this year. Rich wanna borrow my
projector again?

Welcome, Sara.  I've heard really good things about Cake, too but haven't
used it yet. Larry Masters came to one of our meetings once and it was very
informative and seemed solid.  I would def. look into it if I got to do a
from-scratch php project.

Agree about an existing code-base: I think frameworks are good if you get to
start from scratch, not shove stuff existing code in (head-aches).

We have been working on the docs for the latest 1.2 release of CakePHP,
http://tempdocs.cakephp.org so hopefully we can get out of that "their docs
suck" category.

Hope to stop in an see everyone my next trip to Chicago...

   Not sure about January meeting.. Rich?..

   As to frameworks, Cake is pretty Rails-like and good and have heard 
good things about Symfony.  Don't have any good docs, but would strongly 
suggest a slow methodical approach in evaluating frameworks.  If you 
have an existing code base, it may be more efficient to just refactor to 
a good pattern rather than use framework.

   Its a good group of PHP people here and PHP|tek conference is going 
to be in Chicago again so there is a fair amount going on ;-)  Welcome!

Hi! I'm a new transplant to Chicago as of October, having taken a job with a
small company which requires my very rusty PHP skills a lot more than I
thought it would. In an attempt to shine them up even faster than I have
been, thought I'd drop in and see if the local PHPug was active.

So, questions:

1. Is there a January meeting on 1/16?

2. The boss is asking if we should start using a framework to clean up a lot
of our old legacy code. Ok, he's not asking if we should, he's asking which
one. Does anyone have a resource for a list of pros/cons for the common
frameworks - preferably a recent one? Everything I've come across is from
'06 or earlier.

development world by storm, there will be a regional Drupal Camp event later 
this month in Milwaukee!

aimed at programmers.  It seemed to me from presentations I've given to 
East Coast PHP groups that this might be well-received. 

My local PHP group LIPHP found lots of issues and we got them cleared 
up, and I've been telling other groups about it.  The latest entry is here:

...this is not really PHP-specific, although the code examples are PHP.  
It is really aimed at the PHP programmer who has no formal training in 
databases and asks practical questions about how to sift through all the

Hey everyone!

   Forgive the job spam here but its slightly different from a standard 
job posting.

   My company, HostedLABS http://hostedlabs.com/ is looking to solve a 
number of problems and some can be tackled in different ways. The things 
I am looking to do are:

a) sponsor or pay people to work on a couple of open-source projects.

b) part-time work for poor but smart college students.

c) full-time employment with the company (salary + stock).


   So in that context let me describe what I'm looking for:

1) paid open-source project development: port the p0f daemon to an

2) paid open-source project development: djbdns (tinydns) modifications, 
adding two modules or extensions to the NS server. see:

3) paid open-source project development: further code modifications to

4) part-time work: general linux systems admin work, evening/weekend 
hours. some coding also possible if desired.

5) full-time employment:

I really need at least two developers and one hard-core systems engineer 
(more than just SA).

The software development roles can be different but I have a general 
need for the following:

- low-level network, OS, filesystem, cluster development, usually in 
C/C++.  Familiarity with libraries such as Spread http://www.spread.org/ 
hack in Erlang, work on VFS or distributed lock managers. etc.  Just 
call it core development.

- systems management software development, Python, perl &| C/C++ where 
called for.  Self awareness and overall management of everything from IP 
space and network stacks to code deployment and system versioning.  SVN 
interface, OS tools usage, heartbeat libraries, rsync, etc. etc.  Call 
it large scale system management.

- web library and framework internals development, PHP. perl, python and 
Ruby.  Re-writing modules or libraries, hacking packages (such as 
Rails), etc.  There may be some C/C++ in the mix for some of these. This 
category is web library development.


For the systems engineer, knowledge of linux internals, virtuialization, 
advanced networking, building OS from scratch, cluster and grid 
filesystems, cluster computing, PXE boot, etc.  Lots of fun stuff to 
play with.  Architecture and design of large scale systems is on the plate.


Really looking for smart people who want to build really cool technology 
in a start-up environment.  For those of you who know me or have heard 
any of my talks you know that there is a global footprint component to 
this and there may be some travel involved on the systems side.

Seems most people who replied wanted (2) BARcamps per year..  I am 
thinking seriously about that but think that perhaps doing Winter and 
Summer would be good timing for not conflicting with other BARcamps. 
Also winter is kinda dead ;-)

Any one have any last opinions on the 1 or 2 BARcamps per year questions?
