Smarty is a templating language. A disciplined programmer with PHP would not need Smarty (et al) because they'd just keep their [bleep] organized. However, large-scale projects with junior coders may find that Smarty (et al) helps enforce the separation of business logic and presentation logic. Or not, if the coders are junior enough... :-) Smarty's one uniqe (afaik) feature is that it compiles itself out into PHP code, so removes the possibly slow string substitution of other templating systems. ymmv naiaa ianal On Mon, March 17, 2008 2:53 pm, Jason Rexilius wrote: > Thanks matt.. Is this thread useful at all? My statement was rather vague, I think Smarty has a place somewhere, but I personally dislike templating in general :D And giving the fact that PHP does HTML already, It seems pretty natural to use it. No, for "Web 2.0" to suck, it would have to be far more concrete and explicitly defined than it, in fact, is. Web 2.0 is *bogus*. I'd also like to hear factual data about Smarty. I live in Java (and a little python or ruby) and templating is incredibly valuable. In my (crappy) php I wrote it didn't have templates but after looking at Smarty, I really think it would have benefited from Smarty. Is it a bad templating solution? Is templating in and of itself disliked? -jaw On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:44 AM, Jason Rexilius <ja...@ho...> wrote: > Using web2.0 in any form other than a joke is bad. > > And last I checked this was a technical forum. I would make a wager the 're-factoring' the original job post referred to involving removing any trace of smarty. And the 'rants' were some humor which is apparently a foreign concept. I'll strive to be more rigid and droll with the list moving forward and get my thoughts pre-approved by the resident 'technical forum' experts (yourself and neil). ----- Original Message ---- From: Jason Rexilius <ja...@ho...> To: Discussions of PHP-related topics among members of the Chicago PHP User's Group. <chi...@li...> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2008 12:44:17 PM Subject: Re: [chiPHPug-discuss] Threadless/Skinnycorp is hiring a couple PHP peeps Using web2.0 in any form other than a joke is bad. Yeah- you build the template system in Javascript. That statement is so vague and biased that I had to debate for some time whether it is worth responding to. This is my last reply on the subject since I don't want to argue about Smarty here, but if you have any actual facts as to why using Smarty is bad, and even better, know of a template system that fits your 'web 2.0' notions, I would like to hear it. Calling it 'cancer' and not 'web 2.0' isn't informative at all, especially since web 2.0 means about a million different things to different people - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2 . Not one single mention of meanings on there has anything to do with using Smarty. Hmm. I don't know anything about it so I can't really agree or disagree with that. From the example I saw of the template thing it can do, it looks kinda neat. Though now that I think of it, something like templates would be easy to do via includes and strategically placed blocks of PHP code. ~Amaroq Luca Matteis <lma...@gm...> wrote: Smarty sucks! Since when you recieve the data from the server all you have on the client is JavaScript its natural to use Javascript Objects (JSON) to pass data around. For general purpose data loading though its probably best to just render HTML on the server and send it as it is, PHP is pretty good at this. Yeah- I would use AJAX to talk/poll server and JSON as a fast transport of state objects and either sessions or a db to store the state on the server. Sessions have an expiration you'll need to account for but otherwise you'll need some authentication for a db state. Using JSON to store all the state/object data between server and client would keep it pretty simple without a lot of translation. In short PHP in standard config (mod_php in apache) doesn't keep itself alive but rather lives inside the Apache children daemons. But whenever it gets called to execute code it starts with a clean interpreter, meaning state gets dropped between request processing. This is a Good Thing when it comes to pure HTTP-based web applications and makes for cleaner horizontal scaling. It is however a downside when you try to do things like what you are describing. Java is generally better suited to bolting HTTP on top of client-server model applications. If you want it to stay on a single machine that is. The way you might approach this would be to use traditional Unix models for IPC and network programming. Fork a background process to maintain persistent connection to server (if thats required) and pick an IPC mechanism for subsequent HTTP transactions to request state and eventually flush output to client. You could use a simple Javascript/AJAX mechanism to poll (web) server every so often. The great thing about PHP is it doesn't hide the OS from you, so if you know how to use the Unix operating system for distributed or network computing, then PHP plays very nice with it. If you only know a programming language (like Java) then you would have a hard time doing everything in pure PHP. Hope that helps some! -jason Guangsheng HE wrote: > Hi to all PHP gurus in Chicago land! > > I have been working with C/C++/Perl in UNIX/LINUX environment for many years > and now want to create web for both myself and some projects at work. > > I have experience with simple HTML, CGI and SQL, and a little bit PHP work > two years ago.
