Hi folks, The only thing that's annoyed me about PHP for all the years I've used it is the inconsistency with some of the function arguments -- particularly the functions that use "needle" and "haystack" arguments. I've found myself having to look these up every single time I used them. I finally learned that there is a pattern to this. Arguments for array functions like in_array() are always ordered $needle, $haystack, while arguments for string functions like str_pos() are always ordered $haystack, $needle. In my own head, I remember which is which by associating the first in the alphabet (array) with the most common sequence in English usage (a "needle" in a "haystack"). Now that I no longer have to look THAT up, I'm getting annoyed by having to look up which functions return a modified value, like array_unique(), and which functions simply operate upon the value (and return something related to the value), like array_unshift(). Does anyone have a tip for remembering these? Thanks, -Arlo _______________________________ Arlo Leach 773.769.6106 http://arlomedia.com |

Okay, let's make this simple. If you want in the raffle for the ZendCon pass, reply off-list to THIS email. http://ZendCon.com/ I'll draw emails Tuesday night from a hat, and you win. One entry per person. You have to have participated in some way previously with the group. I.e., showed up at a meeting or posted to this list. -- Some people ask for gifts here. I just want you to buy an Indie CD for yourself: http://cdbaby.com/search/from/lynch |

I second the recommendation of vim, here's the url: http://www.vim.org/ If you want to count lines in Windows, try the previously mentioned "wc" command-line program.. There's a precompiled version in the UnxUtils package which doesn't require a cygwin install: http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/ -- Kevin Conder |

Well vi let's you do a regex search and replace and will tell you how many rows affected, then you can do an undo.... Voila! A decent Regular Expression search / count, built into the editor will probably be the harder one to find. Asking a bunch of developers which editor to use is generally futile. We all have our own preferences, and have invested too much time in fine-tuning the editor of choice (or sometimes of no-choice) to fit our needs. If *other* users will be stuck with using the editor you pick, I highly recommend you solicit their opinion before picking -- You may end up having to convince the Department to install several well-known editors, as you are unlikely to get concensus. PS Put me down for recommending 'vim', though I'm not sure it's right for you, even though it's perfect for me. You get the line count trivially. Searching for lines that match would be a matter of typing: /HD.*as.*01.*286.*441~ / starts the search . matches any character * means 0 or more Counting the matches is probably trivial in vi, but I've never had to do that, as I just pop out to shell with grep -c for that. e-texteditor is my favorite on windows too. To understand why it's so awesome you have to watch the video on their website. Being able to select text like this is the coolest thing ever. It's also easy to write your own bundles to make the editor do what you want if it's not already built in. The bundles are compatible with TextMate, so there are already a lot to choose from. http://www.e-texteditor.com/ -----Original Message----- From: Sara Trice [mailto:sa...@sa...] Sent: Tuesday, August 04, 2009 4:00 PM To: Chicago PHP User Group Subject: Re: [chiPHPug-discuss] Text Editors I've been pretty happy with E-TextEditor when I'm working in a Windows environment. http://www.e-texteditor.com/ --Sara On Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 3:46 PM, Roderick Thomas <tho...@ms...> wrote: > For those of you who I haven't met . . . > > I'm a novice programmer. I use Aptana for HTML/PHP/Javascript development. It is really intuitive with code completion for PHP. It also has FTP capabilities (a must for me). I've only messed with it a little, but Aptana also has some ability to connect with MySQL data sources. I've used it successfully on Windows and it works great. They also have a Linux version (couldn't get it to work) and a Mac version (runs really slow). For that matter the dos command "edit" isn't a bad editor for programming when visiting random windows host. It also gives locations and is binary safe when used as edit /b. I would like to recommend vim. It does all that you need and is available on any platform, has row/char count, syntax highlighting and advanced search and replace. But a syntax that takes a bit of mastery.
