I tried running BORG 1.7.3 in portable mode from a thumb drive. However, there
was an error message and the program wouldn't start. I suspect that by default
BORG tries to use the Java on the host machine, which in this particular case
is a version earlier than what is required.
However, I do have the latest version of Java installed on the thumb drive,
which I downloaded from PortableApps.com. I suppose that what I need to run
BORG from the thumb drive is a way to point it to the Java on it. Do you know
of a way to do this?

I'm guessing that you'd need the "Java Portable Launcher" application from
portableapps.com. You'd use it to run the installer and afterwards, the file
borg.jar in the folder where you install borg.
I'd be interested in trying it myself, but portableapps doesn't seem to
support Linux and I switch my thumb drive between windows XP and linux.
PortableApps doesn't seem too portable to me. I have the latest Java on all my
machines, so I don't have a problem.
If it doesn't work, Borg 1.7.1 will run with Java 5 - if that's what's on the
machines.

Thank you for the answer. I'll try the Java Portable Launcher and I hope that
it will work. I would like to run BORG on a notebook on which I have
restricted access. However, I cannot add (a newer version of) Java to it, thus
there is a need to have Java on the thumb drive.

I'm pleased to say that BORG started on the thumb drive using the Java
Portable Launcher with Java also installed on it.
