Dearest bodders, it's been a while but now we're upgrading to 2.8 - does anyone know if there are db updates required since the last release? If so, any kind soul willing to donate any upgrade scripts? in return for a screech on the bagpipes from the fc when we come down mid sept? --=20 Alistair Young Senior Software Engineer UHI@Sabhal M=F2r Ostaig Isle of Skye Scotland |

QMShibb is set to create a Perception account if it doesn't already exist, join the user into the 'Shibboleth Users' group and create a schedule for the test. So, since you used the Anonymous Internet User Route, there is now a Perception user called 'Anonymous Internet Us...@so...'. No big deal - it's not the production Perception server. Adam, Pursuant to your request, there is a socketized Bods demo at: http://socket.leeds.ac.uk/bodington/site/ Bodders are welcome to use the guest account: username: guest pw: guest1 The SOCKET links lead to the QMShibb sub-project and the main sub-project. The QMShibb page has shibbed links to a QuestionMark Perception test, a list of tests and the admin app (to which 'guest' will not have access). We have put up 2 SOCKET web services and a 'SOCKET web application'. (The create SOCKET service tool will not be visible to a guest user.) The web service producers are on an external server, while the consumer apps are in socket.leeds.ac.uk along with the bodington instance. Chemical Elements This is one of our test services. The stylesheets are development versions - we are making no claims that these are fit for teaching purposes. Jabber We have plugged in a Jabber applet which is served out from my (personal) remote server in a jsp. (The Jabber server uses an embedded Hypersonic. Wouldn't want any conflict with QuickBods.) I simply chose what looked like the simplest Jabber applet around: e4Applet 1.1.1 You can sign on with Jabber account: username: guest01 password: socket01 Or, if your name is Adam Marshall, username: adam password: socket1 You can join the following room: so...@co... No pw required. SSRun Although we will sign off with the ability to handle complex data types, the present socket engine handles simple datatypes only - strings, ints, floats, doubles, booleans, dates. (Client-side js validation comes as standard.) However, we have set up the JISC/Icodeon ASSIS/SSRun web service and passed the wsdl through the engine. The test data has not been loaded into the Web service and there are complex data types so the service is not functional, but this gives a basic impression of what the final turnkey product will do. As with Chemical Elements, there has been absolutely no tinkering with the Java, only some stylesheet tweaks (I added a fetching orange/yellow gradient fill to SSRun, for example). Two extremely valuable operations are working, though: ping and createRunId, proving that the service is live. We will be putting up a SOCKET development release soon, with perhaps a couple more over the next few weeks leading up to 1.0: simple types; arrays; complex types included. For further information: email me, sign into Jabber Bods and I'll be clayton. Regards, Brian |

Ah, that would be the time when I caught my foot under the front seat when entering the back seat of a taxi. The taxi took off with me one-leg-in-and-one-leg-out. I managed to hop like a mad thing for about ten yards before falling on my erse then seeing the rear left taxi tyre about 2 inches from my napper as I was dragged along for another 20 yards. The worst thing was that my three mates were in the taxi - all I could hear was laughing. Sheesh. Regards, Brian -----Original Message----- From: bod...@li... At the moment permission checks are done all over the place in Bodington. One layer that often does checks is the BuildingSession layer. Now I am wanting to call a method at the session layer that requires sysadmin permission but in this instance I want to allow a lesser user to make the call. I don't want to move the permission check to the Facility layer as this just leads to people calling the method and forgetting to perform the permission check, or performing a different permission check. So which route should I take: - Create another method that doesn't have the permission check. - Switch users before making the call? BuildingContext.setUser(). Should the BuildingContext have a running as property so that permission checks can be made against this user but the actions would be attributed to the correct user. This also might eventual be a route to allowing users to assume the identity of other users. -- -- Matthew Buckett, VLE Developer -- Learning Technologies Group, Oxford University Computing Services -- Tel: +44 (0)1865 283660 http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/ltg/ |

Were they there to cure the > original problem which went away itself? > I find that the longer those sleeps are the less often the exceptions occur - my interpretation is that this allows the API's background threads to catch up with the API calls but it is hard to trace this kind of problem because the exceptions occur in the background thread are caught in the background thread and their stack trace refers to that thread. With a zero delay the exceptions come thick and fast. There's a limit to how much time I can put into studying this. In my personal opinion a good stable implementation of a network protocol should always report errors up to the application layer and not simply spew out stack traces on stderr and in the worst case silently freeze up. I have lost confidence in the Novell code. (By the way , can anyone find a bug reporting web site?) Another good reason to switch to the Sun LDAP provider is that it conforms to JNDI which is the directory equivalent of JDBC. That means if we ever experience problems with the Sun provider we can drop in another one without wasting time reprogramming to a new API - you just drop a jar file into the lib directory and edit the config file. Anyway, I realise that I'm in a minority of 1. The Leeds specific authenticator is now based on JNDI and I'm not going to switch it back to the Novell API because I need to get on with the next job. However, I'd be perfectly happy if someone else wants to rewrite it for release. Jon |

Jon, if your suspicions are correct and that the thread doesn't have time to get ready, then adding more sleeps would presumably make it worse? What happens if you remove them? Were they there to cure the original problem which went away itself? FWIW, the novell libs work fine on my laptop using openldap on localhost. You might like to add, if you haven't already that BB have signed the IMS-CommonCartridge declaration along with Microsoft, D2L and others. Steve Lay, if he is on this list, can clarify, but there are some obligations under that agreement that have an impact on patents that interfere with the IMS Common cartridge. Im not certain if its 100% relevant. Another thought, if your VLE or Course Management System is not a VLE or CMS, but really a virtual research environment.... what happens ? BTW, sakai-dev has blackboard employees as members, are there any in Bodington or Tetra lists..... perhaps they could voice an opinion?... or give some guidance :) (go on... you know you want to) Ian Sean Mehan wrote: > I have blogged some info on this, from Bb, from some observers, from > the US patent office.
