There may be other, practical reasons for it. For example, I don't know = how=20 audacity does it though, you may first need to open the file you will be=20 streaming to. That means you should open the file first, so if it fails = the=20 user can do something about it. There may be other parts of the process = that=20 need to be initialized that I don't even know of. If I just hit the record button and start jamming on my guitar, I may fin= d=20 myself finishing the song only to learn that it wasn't recorded because m= y=20 tmp directory had the wrong permissions! Also, I'm using Audacity in place of the traditional mastering tape deck,= and=20 I'm recording mixed signals from a hard drive recorder. There is a lot o= f=20 space on the tracks on the recorder before the song starts. It is better= for=20 me to start playback (after satisfying myself with the knobs, of course) = and=20 then hit the record button at the exact right time (the drummer says "3" = and=20 I hit record). There is actually a second or more (or less) pause while=20 Audacity gets everything initialized to record. Recording should start=20 *immediately* when I hit the button. Personally, I prefer the two-click method. It also prevents me from=20 accidentally hitting the record button while I'm doing other things, whic= h=20 could be disasterous depending on other factors. It would certainly make a fine option, and I'd be willing to bet that if = you=20 asked 10 audio engineers you could likely get 10 completely different way= s to=20 do it, so why not making it an option? Such as "Press pause to record" o= r=20 something captioned that actually makes more sense than that.
