The trouble here Paul, is that experienced users of Audacity like Steveand myself struggle to find how to achieve this then you can be sure thatmany of our users will struggle too.
And one of the outcomes of that will be an increased no of support "calls"on the Forum and on feedback@ => increased workload for the Forumelves.
It might help a little if in the Preferences left hand menu the "Waveforms"and "Spectrograms" entries were moved to be directly under the "Tracks"entry so that they are effectively grouped.
The Preferences pane for "Waveforms" is very empty - surely it would be easier to lose this new preference and revert to addiing "Waveform (dB)" back as an option in the dropdown for "Default view mode" in the Trackspreferences pane. This would have the benefits of simplicity, clarityand discoverability.

This is all incorrect, see my other response. You need a combination of Tracks and Waveforms preferences but it can be done.

Unlike Spectrogram view which has Preferences as well as per track settingsWaveform only appears to have per track settings that apply to that one trackonly - and thus it doesn't appear to be a setting that will propagate to other tracksor persist for those tracks in your next Audacity session.
In 2.1.1 (and earlier) in Preferences>Tracks the dropdown for Default view modeoffered several options including Waveform dB.
In 2.1.2 this has been reduced to just 2: Waveform and Spectrogram.
So the simple answer appears to be: you can't.
This would seem to be serious refgression as we know from a recent forum threadthat many users like to set Waveform (dB) as their preferred default.
Peter.

How can the default track view be set to "Waveform (dB)" in Audacity 2.1.2?
Steve
