The following appear twice in Preferences: Align with Zero Align with Cursor Align with Selection Start Align with Selection End Align End with Cursor Align End with Selection Start Align End with Selection End Once is for the "Align Tracks" menu and once is for the "Align and Move Cursor" menu. Because the Preferences list the menu labels (the text as it appears in the menu) there is nothing in the Preference settings to distinguish which option corresponds to which function. Also, "Align with Cursor" does exactly the same thing as "Align with Selection Start", so although they have different names they duplicate the same function. The same for "Align End with Cursor" and "Align End with Selection Start". It has been suggested that users may not realise that when there is a selection the cursor position is the start of the selection - however we already assume that users will understand this in "Align and Move Cursor". I am NOT suggesting that we add another duplicate menu named "Align and Move Selection". None of these commands appear to be listed in the shortcut reference: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Keyboard_Shortcut_Reference#tracks (P1 for the manual?) There are two solutions that come to mind: 1) Replace the Keyboard Preferences Interface with one that indicates the menu hierarchy. 2) Use unique names for all menu items. Option 1 is probably preferable, but a lot of work. Option 2 is a trivial fix. One way or another it needs fixing. Duplicate preferences were not present in Audacity 2.0.0. If we decide for option 2, then we need to decide on the labels that appear in the menus (and also appear in Preferences). There is an additional command currently being developed for the "Align Tracks" menu which will align tracks end to end. I'd prefer not to hold up the release of 2.0.4 so my vote would be to go for option 2 and we can reconsider the menu names when there is a better interface for keyboard preferences. Steve |
