Apologies to Martyn, but this patch seems all gain and no pain to me so I'd still like a quick discuss. Is the problem you identify Sven when using channel profiles (which I have not tested)? In Sven's example, on renaming the stereo track from "Vocal Test" to "Vocal Production" then splitting to stereo or mono, I get both channels named as "Vocal Production". This is the same as what happens now, and seems good to me: I renamed when the channels were merged, so both channels should be named as the rename when split. What is different in your patch is that if I rename the two channels while they are split, then I can merge and split again and still keep the channel names that I chose when the track was split. I can't see what else you would want if you rename when split with the intention of merging and splitting again as you work on the audio. If you rename when split with the intention of merging then not splitting again, there is no change from now. You end up renaming the merged track if you rename the upper track while split, otherwise you don't rename the merged track. I don't see a problem with Undo/Redo or with reopening projects saved in the patched or previous versions. The patched behaviour makes a clear distinction between rename when merged and rename when split that could be intuitively documented. +1 here (again if I've not missed something).
