Peter, David et al: I'd go for Option 3. The LAME MP3 page has problems besides the broken links: the image is ancient and is right-aligned - it just looks awful. The FAQ page is at least up to date. If it is agreed to go with option 3 I'll make the changes. -- Bill On 24/02/2012, at 11:12 AM, Peter Sampson wrote: > Good catch David. > > The same is obviously true of the online wiki version of the manual. > > I can't comment on the accuracy (as I don't use LAME) but noted from the history is that the last update to the LAME MP3 was in late 2009 and the FAQ has been updated recently and extensively in 2011, from which I would infer that the FAQ information is more likey to be accurate. > > However it is clear that we have unnecessary duplication here (which we always try to avoid as far as possible in the manual). > We should either: > Option 1) Retain the LAME MP3 page (possibly with its contents updated replaced with the material from the FAQ) and replace the FAQ entry with a link to the LAME MP3 page, > or > Option 2) Deprecate the LAME MP3 page and direct any links that were previously made to it go direct to the FAQ page. > > Personally I favour option 1 - as I believe that FAQs should be short and punchy and if fuller information is required then a link to a page on the topic should be made. And note that about 7 or so pages (aprt from translations) currently link to the LAME MP3 page. > > Is this a P1/P2 (broken links)? > Do we need to at least patch up the LAME MP3 page for 2.0 - even if we don't implement either of 1 or 2 above? > > > > Option 3) > A quick fix would be to change all the current links that go to the LAME MP3 page and change them to go to the FAQ (and delete the LAME MP3 page, possibly later). > > Peter. > > Peter Sampson > Tel: +44 (0)1625 524 780 > Mob: +44 (0)7732 278 299 > From: David Bailes <drb...@go...> > To: "for identification, characterization, and prioritization of bugs." <aud...@li...> > Sent: Friday, February 24, 2012 3:35 PM > Subject: [Audacity-quality] Lame mp3 page in manual > > using audacity 2.0 rc2 on windows 7. > on the first page of the manual, I can open a link to go to the > libraries preferences page. > on that page, I can open a link to the lame mp3 page. > The windows section of that page is quite different from the lame > windows section of the FAQ:Installation and Plug-Ins page, and > includes dead links. > > David. > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Virtualization & Cloud Management Using Capacity Planning > Cloud computing makes use of virtualization - but cloud computing > also focuses on allowing computing to be delivered as a service. > http://www.accelacomm.com/jaw/sfnl/114/51521223/ > _______________________________________________ > Audacity-quality mailing list > Aud...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/audacity-quality > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Virtualization & Cloud Management Using Capacity Planning > Cloud computing makes use of virtualization - but cloud computing > also focuses on allowing computing to be delivered as a service. > http://www.accelacomm.com/jaw/sfnl/114/51521223/_______________________________________________ > Audacity-quality mailing list > Aud...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/audacity-quality |
