This would make sense as a plug-in module for Audacity. If your friend really is interested, he should subscribe to audacity-devel and ask the question himself rather than by proxy - and say a lot more about what he wants to achieve. He should compile Audacity from source and try out experimental features like midi tracks. He should also look at label tracks. After he's talked with us he'll have a better idea whether he wants to fork the Audacity project (little to no help from us) or to work on a plug-in that adds on to Audacity and modifies the Audacity user interface. I've in the past modified Audacity as an event logger/event recorder and can give some pointers. This sounds like a less radical modification. --James.
