This is all sounding very good then. We know libresample works well with Audacity - it is used in the Windows build which is what gets the most heavy use by users. We know of a specific problem/bug/incompatibility, bug 190, if libsamplerate is used. Dominic also has a strong preference for libresample being used, because he wants to honour both the spirit and letter of libsamplerate's license. It is why he wrote libresample in the first place. The way I see it, use of libresamplerate, at least from within Audacity, is experimental and for enthusiasts. It may well have advantages in terms of quality of the interpolation and even speed. I simply don't know. However, for our default build settings stability is more important, which strongly argues for libresample. If you read Gale's comments in the bug it's clear that if we instead made libsamplerate the default then the bug would be a P2, i.e. it would be a release blocker. It would be lovely if we can sync our release to Ubuntu this time. It looks like we are going to try, but no guarantees. This release cycle we're putting status of our release ahead of releasing to a date. --James. |
