I just checked this on Vista and the problem is that the old mixer 
interface no longer works on Vista.  From some quick reading, it's 
"supposed" to work, but I'll have to dig a bit more.

In the current case, the volume sliders cause an "artificial" gain to be 
applied to the audio.

This should probably be added to the checklist...
