The sound hardware is RME DIGI 96/8 PST in an Win XP machine.

I experienced the same when setting playback device to another device, I
get an error message. But when I try to record without the "play other
track" the recording device seems to be opened but waveform display is
not moving. I first thougt of some "clocking" issue and checked if the
card is on lock. But that is ok. And when recording with MME-drivers I
don't need any workaround.
