Even on Windows it's recommended not to use CTRL + ALT combinations
because this is sometimes interpreted as the ALTGR key, used to
generate alternative characters.

Yet another alternative would be CTRL + U to mute all, and CTRL +
SHIFT +  U to unmute all.
