[Audacity-nyquist] How to find gaps within an audio clip

Hello,

Can anyone direct me to some code / psuedo-code that would allow me mark the 
spaces (or gaps) within an audio clip.
I tried manipulating the 'beat finder' code to no avail.

My intended purpose is to compress audio by removing long gaps of silence.
