Don't worry. I'd rather | have Stable vs Unstable, with forums inside those categories, and the | possibility of users going into OS-specific SUB-forums, than the way | round. Categorizing first by OS and then by kind of message forces us | to have a "General" forum where non-OS-specific messages should go. | I don't like that. I prefer Categorize first by kind of message, then by | OS if applicabble/known by user. Hi Buanzo I'm quite happy with categorizing by either OS or Stable/Unstable, but I don't follow the argument that categorising by OS forces you into a General category - you need that anyway even if you categorise by stable/unstable to cover questions not related to Audacity directly. However you categorize, I think you want people who are asking anything to do with Audacity (problem or general comment about it) to be in either *Stable/Unstable -> ** OS Subforum -> *** subcategory as needed or *OS -> ** Stable/Unstable Subforum -> *** subcategory as needed or as another variant *Stable/Unstable -> ** Subforum as needed-> *** OS subcategory I'd also have thought user information about their OS more likely to be reliable than that on their version, if help list is anything to go by. I still think we need to get them in a forum for their OS somewhere along the line unless the question is unrelated to Audacity. If you look at Stable/Unstable > General as it is now I think it would be very easy from the Board index to click on the General link (not realising the subforums are links), then press New topic, forget you are not in a OS subforum and submit. This does not seem to be what Dominic was asking for and will increase the number of people not posting to their OS forum. I'd have thought when you clicked on General you want to see all four subforums Linux/OS X/ Windows/ unclassified (if we must). I think the current way of doing things will confuse people, especially as the three OS subforums are there marked as "Forum". Anyway, one other comment, when you are posting your message, I think you might clarify that Save means save to draft. You'll find many people hitting that thinking they are posting without seeing "submit". | > PS Should Richard and myself be administrators, or what happens if users | > come to help list with registration problems or want their account deleted | > and such? | | I'll wait for Dominic to tell me what access level to grant. I've already | granted the "Developer" rank to a couple of users, but ranks are not | special powers. Just let me know what you need, or make Dominic hit | me until I do it :) Anyone who spends a great deal of time on help list needs admin powers on the forum to the level of being able to administer user accounts, as they did on the old Forum. Thanks for your efforts, Buanzo. The new Forum is now announced on the Wiki too. Gale Outbound message virus free. Tested on: 7/31/2007 8:38:06 AM |
